Well, we went down this morning and found that the good thing was too much of a good thing. Price was really good for 2 nights but had to pay outrageous prices for added on nights. Would rather not fork out over 600 quid for 4 nights. No thanks.
So we booked our flight and we’ll find a B&B when we get there. Figured it would be a good way to see the city.
We plan to be in Dublin then from Monday 13th to Friday 17th.
Thank you to everyone who posted suggestions of what to do. We’ll be quite busy by the looks of things
You should also check out the progress of the Milennium SPike, or whatever it is we are calling it now, so that you can coment on the thread onthis board!!
For a delicious dinner, go to the Spanish restaurant called Samlamanca on Wicklow St, it is right next door to the tourist office in a deconsecrated church, so you can’t exactly miss it!!
BTW, Kal & Washte, don’t be alarmed by yojimbo’s androgyny when you meet him. When he was taken into the Bolshoi as a pre-pubescent waif, they gave him monkey-gland injections that stunted his primary masculine indicators, but he’s getting treated since he retired. He’s also a little shy, so you’ll have to coax him out of his shell.
manwithaplan: At the moment we have no firm, er, plans, just Twisty and yojimbo’s phone numbers. With us being there for 4 nights, we kinda like the idea of drinking beer in the company of one or more fellow Dopers every evening. Hell, name the pub and we’d probably make it for your lunch-hour too.
Yojimbo, jjimm: You’re both being too bloody weird.
to stay i recommend the Pembroke Guesthouse on Baggot street, 15min walk from stephens green.
cheaper per night for a double than the comfort in, travel lodge and jury’s, AFAI remember.
wonderful rooms, great staff, fantastic breakfast (ask for a mezzanine room).
it’s where my family stay when they come down (my parents will be there on the 18th actually).
its online at www.pembrokeguesthouse.ie. (i think)
come see me in trinity, or at least see the book of kells and the library.
M J O’Neill’s on suffolk street does a very good club sandwich, and a mean pint of guinness.
the tattoo place in temple bar beside the american style diner is highly recommended by my friends.
irishgirl: We were hoping you’d pop into this thread. Would you email either Washte or myself, so we can arrange meeting up and stuff? You’ve got a couple of hugs due to you.
The Pembroke Guesthouse sounds good, but the link doesn’t work and Googling only turns up the Pembroke Townhouse which isn’t on Baggot Street.
sorry, i called my mum to check i had the right address, and i hadn’t. it’s the pembroke townhouse! d’oh!
and it’s technically on baggot street.
oops. sorry.
I’d second any suggestion to stay in the Baggot Street area. It’s all very nice and Georgian, has some decent pubs and places to eat and it’s only a short stroll from the city centre. Much better that the faux medieval superpub schtick of the Arlington (established c.1995).
I’ll keep in touch with yojimbo and try make it to whatever you arrange. If your flight gets in after working hours on Monday (after say 7pm), I’d be happy to give you a lift from the airport.
If your plans to stay at the Pembroke don’t pan out, just wait till you get to town and make the Tourist Info Centre your first stop. (Just to sweeten the pot this is right next to the Spanish joint and O’Neil’s.) They run a bed finding service that’s second to none. Just give them you’re price range and style, and they’ll have a dozen places for you inside of a minute. In fact, as you’re coming in off-season, they’ll pro’ally come up with two dozen.
This service costs you all of 1 Eur. Having said that, the place that takes you in never recoups the deposit you leave with the Tourist Board. It’s kept as a finder’s fee. If you’re feeling sneaky you can sign up for one night through the board and work out subsequent nights with he proprietor. If you end up at a B&B, better than even money says the owner will appreciate you’re efforts and swing you a deal.
As Coldfire mentioned, from the airport there’s a bus that take you right down to the city centre (you could cab it but it won’t be much shorter and it’ll cost you a lot more-I’ve never paid less than 30). There’s actually a few but try to catch the 747. That one’s an express. At the far left of the arrivals terminal, there’s an info both that sells bus passes valid for several days. I think there’s a five-day one available. If so take it. That’ll get you from/to the airport and around town during your stay.
If you’re looking for another thing to add to your agenda, it’s worth taking a stroll through the National Gallery. Though there permanent collection is metsa-metsa, the Yeats room is something to write home about. And for what it’s worth, the entrance is right across the street from the southeast corner of Trinity. You can stroll through front square, see the Book of Kells, pop up to the Long Room, buy a pint for irishgirl at the Pav, and hit the Museum in one fell swoop.
Thanks for all the info Coileán. As you point out, it will be a spendy and long journey by taxi, so we will probably catch the bus. If they have a 5 day pass, we may do this as well - another way to see the city - though we’ve been told most things are easily accessible in town.
Please feel free to join us if you’d like. Would be nice to meet any and all fellow Dopers.
