Kamala Harris's choice of Tim Walz as VP

I’d take it a step further; maybe I’m just erring on the side of giving her credit because we know how it turned out, but: what she said and did in 2020 led to her being the VP to a guy who — well, had been the VP, and then ran for president, and then became president. And now, having been the VP, she of course has the nomination locked up and is running for president in 2024.

If she’d done something different back then, then maybe that’s — not so, now?

It’s taken as a sign that Harris is too committed to the “woke activist” side of the Party. The premise is that it will scare the centrists away, or demotivate some, especially the independents who don’t like Trump but are also small government or whatever.

I don’t really think much of it myself. I think most Dems are proud of the agenda and his results, so they aren’t going to be scared off.

Just to agree with @BigT and add a cite.

Then the charge is that she “ceded” to the mainstream center leaning of the party?

It’s all about who is making the charge.

Also, apparently there are folks who want a more “centrist” position than the Dems currently hold. Nuts, but it’s all an effect of the Overton Window.

“You guys want children to get free meals in school. That’s radical. We want nationwide elimination of abortion. That’s what mainstream Americans want. We need to find middle ground.”

I just saw this - former Minnesota Governor and former pro-wrestler Jesse Ventura has come out criticizing Vance for not showing respect to a fellow veteran.

This is interesting. Ventura is an independent from the Reform Party and then the Independence Party serving as Governor from 1999 to 2003.

He’s a self-described fiscal conservative, social liberal. I thought he was a more conservative, but reading his history on wikipedia shows I was mistaken. He joined the Green Party at one point. He has now endorsed Kamala Harris for President.

I’m looking forward to a day very soon when I will never again have to hear about what a candidate for office did or didn’t do during Vietnam.

Time marches on. Now we’re hearing about what the candidates did or didn’t do during Iraq.

Of course, there was no draft for Iraq, so it isn’t a default expectation that Gen X and Millennials would have fought in it and I’m hoping it’ll prove a less contentious issue over the next 20-40 years.

I feel terrible that Walz’ son is being dragged into the spotlight. Apparently he has a learning disability and anxiety. I hope that the Republicans leave him alone. Hope Walz appears to be OK with some publicity. Also she’s 23 which is miles different from 17.

It took me a minute to parse this sentence, as I’m hoping the same thing!
(Then I remembered that the daughter’s name is Hope).

If they could organize a rally/ class reunion of Tim’s former students and football players, it would be a stark contrast to trump’s rallies. There trump is surrounded by his “front row Joes”, a motley collection of tetched knuckle draggers, and then show a crowd of healthy Americans that’s genuinely joyous.

Today’s Chicago Trib had a curious editorial page. A highly critical piece “TW has been a disaster” by a St Paul corporate atty, above a favorable piece “TW’s greatest skill is adaptability” by and ex-Minneapolis newspaperman.

Today I learned that Harlan Crow (Clarence Thomas’ best buddy) funded the attacks on John Kerrys’ military record. No doubt he’s pouring more money into the attacks on Tim Walz, since it’s the same guy running it.

You mean the Republicans who nominated a man infamous for mocking a disabled reporter? Those Republicans?

The people who displayed pictures of a man’s privates in Congress for no good reason? Those Republicans?

No, I mean the Republicans who mocked grieving parents of American soldiers killed in action. They would never stoop so low as to attack a disabled person.

Trump mocked a reporter for his disability, and the crowd cheered. It occurred in the 2016 campaign.

What was that sound? Was it Mencken rolling over in his grave?

My name is Poe, and dammit! I’m the law around these parts.
