Kamala Harris's choice of Tim Walz as VP

Along with Chelsea Clinton.

Can anybody explain the nature of Gus’ disability? I’ve heard it described as a “non verbal learning disability”, but that it does not mean that he can’t speak.

I’m not trying to be intrusive or disrespectful, but I am curious. Does he have a disability that is readily apparent when you meet him, or is it a more subtle issue with learning and/or behavior?

I think the issue is “what counts as going low?” For too long, part of the “high road” has been taking MAGA seriously. The very worst stuff has been ignored, like they farted in church, because it seemed sort of rude to mention the really crazy shit. Thats the only way Vance was able to crawl out of the 4chan hell hole where views like “post-menopausal women have nothing to contribute” are normal.

Its not “going low” to say that these views are weird. Ludicrous. To repeat them and bring them into the light

Almost 3 million kids in North America have the learning disability NVLD. It affects spatial-visual skills and has nothing to do with speaking abilities.

“These individuals are very intelligent and articulate well verbally, but they are typically clumsy with motor and spatial coordination,” he told NBC News. “It’s called a learning disorder because there are a lot of cues other than verbal cues that are necessary for us to keep information in our memory.”

In a nutshell: similar to autism, without the hyper-focus on a subject. Difficulty reading social cues.

Thanks for the link. I was confused a bit by the term “non-verbal”, which is also a common descriptor for people who do not or cannot speak.

In this case, “non-verbal” describes the type of learning that is affected and does not describe the person.

I administer a test to second graders every year called the CogAT, or cognitive abilities test. It has three sections: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal.

The nonverbal section assesses the child’s ability to reason in visual abstract ways. Which of these shapes belongs in a group with these three other shapes? If design A is transformed by some method into design B, what will design C look like when it is transformed in the same way? If I fold paper and punch holes in it as illustrated in this picture, what will the paper look like when unfolded?

So that’s how I understand nonverbal learning disability: it diagnoses a person whose performance on such tasks would be dramatically lower than their performance on other tasks. Folks with this disability often rely heavily on language to navigate the world in situations where other people would not need language.

If you want to see what I’m talking about, here are some sample questions. If you would really struggle on these questions compared to mathematical questions or verbal questions, you might have a nonverbal learning disability.

Moderating: And with this, please drop the details of NVLD or Gus’ learning disorder in this thread. If interested a new thread can be started. Nothing wrong with the prior posts, just a good place to get back on subject.

If you are responding to something in a thread that is basically off-topic or likely to lead to a hijack, try this:

How to Reply as a linked Topic:

Click Reply, in the upper left corner of the reply window is the reply type button, looks like a curving arrow point to the right.

Choose Reply as linked topic and it starts a new thread. As an example, you can choose GD, IMHO or The Pit for it.

That is actually the best method.

Thanks for this. So. If not for Al Franken Tim Walz’s political career might never have gotten off the ground?

I’d heard Franken tell a shorter version of the story a few weeks ago, and yes, that seems to be the gist of it: Walz was running for Congress in a rural, red district, Franken met Walz, and was very impressed with him, and thus, he worked to get Walz some support, including from Rahm Emanuel and the DCCC, which had written the race off as non-winnable for the Democrats.

Sure, but not making up ludicrous "pants on fire " lies or personal insults. A snappy snarky comeback is acceptable.

I’m sorry to keep posting links but I promise that this will be the last one for awhile. I am starting to have the feeling that he’s going to turn out to be a secret serial killer or something. Because otherwise I just woke up in the middle of a Frank Capra movie.

Moderating: Please describe the links.
I fixed the preview at least.

Thank you. I apologize.

Thanks for this.

I was joking when I posted this, but they’re now seriously going with “He claimed he got a commendation from the Chamber of Commerce in 1993 but it was actually from the Junior Chamber of Commerce” now.

“He wasn’t a coach he was an assistant coach!” :scream:

Yep, they’ve got some serious blackmail dirt on him, for sure.

The great thing is that you can easily counter such accusations with…

“So… That’s all you got?”
