Kayaking around Theodore Roosevelt Island (DC)

My wife and I will be in DC later this week and plan to do some kayaking on the Potomac. Looking at a map of Roosevelt Island, it appears there may be an inlet running north-south into the island just north of the TR Memorial Bridge. Is this paddleable?

I think so…I’ll double check when I drive home today. Lots of folks paddling all around there…it’s kind of pretty upstream of there, as well. Roosevelt Island has some shallower mudflat looking places near it, but I don’t think they’d be any trouble getting around.

I always see people paddling around the island. I can’t recall anyone paddling into it. The interior of the island is very swampy, with highly variable water depth and lots of marine vegetation. I think parts of the watery portions are also protected wildlife areas … hikers are restricted to the raised walkway that goes through the eastern part of the island.

…and it looks like it’s clear all the way around for paddling. Like acsenray says, it’s pretty muddy/swampy in places, so I don’t know if I’d try to moor there and walk up…best to use the walkway and stick to established trails.
