Keep your enemies close, but your friends closer.

Last night, I was kind of haphazardly watching the news while reading a local music newspaper. (If you had the sensationalist newscast like we do on Channel 5, you wouldn’t watch it directly, either.) I heard something about “local murder suspect”, “Canadian Mounties”, and “returning home”.

As I looked up, there was a picture of my old friend Jacob. He allegedly murdered his next door neighbor, stole his truck, and hit the road. There is an article in today’s paper. I know I posted a couple of months ago about a friend of mine who was dying from a drug overdose. This was his best friend. The last time I saw Jacob was on May 3, at the Quiet Riot concert. Hm. I guess metal health will really drive you mad. Anyways, at the show, Jacob told me that Mike (aforementioned OD) was going to be ok, that he had lost most of his hearing, but he was still alive. Jacob seemed to be very happy that Mike was coming back to town, and we had a few beers and hung out.

This is just really freaky, because it’s just like they say: he was a nice, quiet kid. This is the same kid that I took to go see Green Day way back in 1994. He was the kid who took too much Dramamine and puked in the back seat of my car all the way home during the 100 mile trip. The same kid who tried to set me up with Mike, and then proceded to get mad when we decided that we weren’t going to date. The same kid who used to leave me intricately folded dollars for tips at the pizza restaurant. The same kid who cried in my lap when he thought his best friend was dying from a drug overdose.

I feel terribly for the family of the murdered man. And I have to wonder, what the hell happened to Jacob in the space of a month that he was arrested, posted bond, murdered his neighbor, then took off like that?
