Kenedy County, Texas

What’s the current status of this county? In one of his “Believe It or Not” books, published in the late 1940s, Ripley claimed it was “The Walled Kingdom of Kenedy,” sort of a company town–it’s on a highway between Galveston and Beaumont but it’s fenced off with barbed wire; and it’s toally owned by five cattle barons and their families–the Kenedys, the Kleebergs, the Armstrongs, the Garcias and the Yturrias. The families and their employees are the county’s entire population, less than 1000. At least that’s what Ripley wrote in 1947. Is Kenedy County the same way now?

As can be seen here, Kenedy County, Texas is almost all the King Ranch, as it has been since 1853. It is on the opposite end of Texas’ coast from Galveston and Beaumont. The King Ranch had 700 employees last year.

I know I’m about to come off looking like the bad guy here… but Im gonna have to agree with the “Its just a dog” argument. That might seem a bit heartless, but I cant, in good conscience, condemn a man in his 70’s to prison for abusing an animal when I’m sitting here with a glass of milk, two eggs and some bacon. If you think that puppy was abused, you ought to see how the cows, pigs and chickens are treated prior to being slaughtered and/or raped of their eggs and milk. That probably doesnt make you quite as queasy because, well, they’re not as cute as a little puppy. Its a sad fact that we spare animals based on aesthetics.

Dolphin safe, but no one cares what happens to the poor tuna.

In any case, two years imprisonment for kicking/choking a dog that dies as a result is not only a little bloodthirsty, its unconstitutional. We have laws that dictate the punishment should fit the crime. If this is worth 2 years in prison, Id hate to see what you guys would do to the Meat and Dairy people. shudder

:: ripping paper::
, and the award for best misplaced post goes to…
Malkavia!!!
I believe you’re looking for the thread about the puppy abuser, but I can’t find it for some reason.

Here I was thinking I had hallucinated this entire post because I couldnt find it in that thread.
Im not insane, Im not insane!

…Wait a minute! Where are we going and why am I in this basket?
blush Anyhow… sorry about the mispost here. =)

Excuse me–I should have written Galveston and Brownsville, not Beaumont. Shame on me. :o (I am not a Texan.)

Reaching for a state map A highway runs from Galveston to Brownsville?

(ok, I’ll give it a rest…)

Well, there’s only one town in Kenedy County (Saritas), but there are only three towns in Brooks County, the county to the west, and so it goes for several counties around there.

FWIWs:
I think that the King Ranch is based in Kingsville, which is in Kleberg County, the county to the north.

I don’t know about today, but as of 1990, Loving County, in West Texas, had a population of 70, consisting of one ranching family and their hands.
