Anyone else have it on? Who was the woman who just sang “Love Reign O’er Me”?
http://www.bettyelavette.com/ … and she’s that good almost ALL the time.
Wow! That was an inspired choice, she did great! My musical mind was clicking away thrilled that the honored Who was a bunch of British teens admiring American rhythm and blues, carried it to another level that influenced young Americans, and now, in their elder years of tribute, hear a Soul veteran blow that song away in a different mode than the teen angsty version. Beautiful go Around!
I’m now listening to old George Jones vinyl albums, to honor fave Possum. On some of these records, he looks way older than he did tonight…he’s livin’better these days, plus a good Nashville scalpel.
She was excellent – and someone I’ve never heard of. Which album should I start with?
I didn’t stay up for the whole thing – who was in the Streisand tribute?
The Streisand tribute started with Queen Latifah giving the speech. Beyonce sang, and some Broadway lady… Sorry I can’t be more specific, but this was the portion of the show where my eyes started rolling back in my head and my ears were bleeding. Good GOD, I don’t get Streisand.
I really enjoyed the show up to that point, although (and this could be my personal bias) I felt that George Jones didn’t get nearly enough love. Perhaps it was that, no matter how good the people covering his songs were… they weren’t George Jones! His voice is so beautiful and distinctive that it was like, “Nice, Randy Travis and Garth Brooks… now can we hear HIM sing?”
Loved the Morgan Freeman musical tribute, and I liked the covers done of the Who’s stuff. Jack Black’s Who speech was amusing, probably because (I assume) there was a time limit.
I wonder how they decide the order of honorees - it seemed like by having Streisand last, she was supposed to be the Big Finish, but to someone like me, it went from REALLY entertaining to almost painful at the end.
