not likely since we (and hopefully other countries) would slap enough embargoes on them to make them forget about importing.
Defense: we still got most of the nukes buddy. also, we got the navy. “but Scarface Z,” you say, “surely there are plenty of military ports in Texas?” yeah, but with a war going on, how many of them do you think are actually in port right now? and how many do you think are captained by native texans? i’m pretty sure whatever destroyers texas does have down there are goin to set sail immediately for the good ole U.S. of A.
oil: we import most of our oil anyway. also, don’t we ship most of our own oil overseas because our refineries can’t handle it?
“Don’t mess with Texas” wasn’t that originally an anti-littering slogan?
mexico: sorry, those mexicans want to work in america, not texas.
There is no “Texas-American Annexation Treaty of 1848” to refer to. The Treaty of Annexation signed in 1844 (1) makes no mention of any right of secession and (2) was rejected by the U.S. Senate. The Joint Resolution of the Congress of the United States, March 1, 1845, which actually resulted in Texas joining the Union, also makes no mention of any right of secession.

Are you saying that Texas medical institutes get money from the Federal Guv’ment?? I am shocked !!! Aren’t Texans always complaining about big guv’ment running their lives? Also, we should destroy all Texas roads, highways, etc paid for with federal money. Hey we paid for it, we’ll destroy it.
They should pay a little attention to their history. (Yes, important things did occur after the Alamo). Seems about 140 years ago, one part of this country wanted to break off from the rest - and what a great decision that turned out to be.
I agree what others have said - want to split from USA? Fine !! No war this time but NO coming back in either.
Seriously, I think Texas is a great state and not all of its population shares that redneck mentality that MDM President quoted.
As for me? I’m as Yankee as you can get - Boston, USA.
Um, this may not be 100% correct. Bush attended Harvard’s MBA program after being rejected by the UT law school, but I don’t know if his undergrad education at Yale has anything to do with UT’s admissions or not.
But, back to the OP:
That’s a huge, flaming, neon-bright “no true Scotsman” fallacy if I’ve ever seen one.
And I’m curious what vague statistics such as “we have over 65% of the defense industry” exactly means. Are 65% of all defense contractors based in Texas? Do operations within Texas generate 65% of all revenues in this industry sector? Do 65% of all defense-industry employees work in Texas? What?
This is a total WAG here, and I don’t know when the original joke was written, but I’m guessing that a great part of Bush’s appeal to the tract’s recent evengelists comes from the notion that “he’s kicking some Ay-rab butt.” Considering how thinly stretched the US military is now, I wonder how Generalissimo Gee-Dubya would fare in the Middle East with a Texas-only force.
Be fearful of our mighty army. Each soldier has six rifles!
As would be known to anyone who’s worn green, “man with rifle(s)” != “soldier”. Even more so, “bunch of men with rifles” != “army”. But what is one drop of misinformation is such a raging torrent ?
“That’s a heap of misinformation you’ve got there, but I willl remember all of it if you ever try to play the ‘Patriot’ card in my earshot again. I now understand how frail is the Texan’s vow of allegiance to the United States. Thank you.”
Go ahead and secede, Texas. Enjoy your 16-game Cowboys / Texans series, you two should become pretty acquainted with each other.
Until we invade to take your oil, of course. You don’t have any cities that wouldn’t be improved aesthetically by a few hundred bunker busters. (That Alamo of yours, for example, looks like a prime hiding spot for WMD.)
And then our troops can “blow off some steam” by letting loose police dogs on Bush, DeLay, Dick Armey et al., before forcing them to climb into a naked pile for their photographic amusement.
With any luck you can have new, Democratic elections by 2012 … How do you say? - “freedom is the will of the Almighty.”
The whole thing is really too silly to be worth much comment, but a couple of items stood out:
Given that the ‘space industry’ is almost entirely funded by the federal government, and since all the launch facilities are located outside of Texas, how’s that gonna work?
Actually, the United States as a whole currently obtains more than 50% of its petroleum from foreign sources, so there most certainly would be supplies available. Also, the idea that Texas would simply refuse to sell any oil or gas to the rest of the US, thus giving up the one revenue stream that surely would make it viable as an independent political entity, is completely absurd.
Not true. The act that made Texas a territory of the United States stated that the Texas territory would not be admitted to the Union as a whole. It would be subdivided into at least 5 states and no more than 8 states. This in fact has already happened. Parts of the Texas territory were incorporated into what is now Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
There is no further provision for the subdivision of the modern State of Texas.
As Buck said, this entire thing is based on a false premise to begin with (Texas does not have a right of secession), but even so, a lot of the stuff is pretty lame. The space industry? The defense industry?
Guess what. NASA is a federal program. We can put it wherever we want. We pay for it. Without the federal government there is no space program in Texas execpt whatever Texans are willing to pay taxes for, and the taxes would have to be huge.
It’s the same for the defense industry. That’s a private industry contracted with federal money. The industry is going to go where the money is.
It’s not like these industries in Texas are just going to go on in some magical self-supporting fashion, they’re going to dry up.
Have fun defending a 360 degree border, btw. We’ll make sure we’ll give all illegal immigrants safe passage into Texas.
Oh…and if we want your oil, we’ll take it. What are you going to do about it? Round up your all volunteer redneck army. Great. I’m sure they’ll do fine against the combined US Armed Forces…not.
Damnit, this has taken a horrible turn! My intention was not to slam Texas or Texans as almost every single one I know, and I’ve been here for 23 years, thinks nothing like what my OP quoted ‘joke’ indicates. Those people are a very small knuckle dragging minority and each state has them. Come on, you guys know better than that. The whole point of this thread was what disasters Bush would reign down on an otherwise happy healthy Texas. Bush guys Bush, we hate Bush, not Texas… Bush.
uhhh… wasn’t he governor there for a while? Isn’t he pretty well liked in Texas?
I think you’re barking up the wrong tree with the whole “Bush is going to ruin Texas” retort. If anything, Bush would likely make Texas more, uhm, Texan. Hell, three-quarters of the reason I can’t stand Bush is that he seems to be intent on making the rest of the US more like Texas.
