Kid toasts himself ala Jackass. I say good

15 is a prime age for teenage guys to attempt acts that they know are dangerous and may/will be painful. But they do them anyway, because they feel the need to test themselves, test their courage, and prove that they’re not wussies or whatever the current term is.

Now I know that everyone here is way too intelligent to ever have played “chicken” with cars or climbed a water tower or anything like that . But when you’re a fifteen-year-old guy, there is just such a rush you get from having done something potentially dangerous. So Kelvin went too far and got hurt. I still feel bad for him. And I must point out for the nth time that neither he nor his parents has blamed this on Johnny Knoxville and his crew.

climbed a water tower?, yes
rode motorcycles? (dirt bikes), yes
bbq’d my butt (cuz it might be cool)?, no

a measure of brains (however small) mixed in with the thrill is a good thing, welcome to natural selection, i only hope when this idiot finally manages to take himself out that he does not take any innocent people with him.

unclviny

I don’t condsider lighting oneself on fire to be in the same realm as other stupid acts teenagers may attempt.

As someone who’s been on fire both professionally and, oh, call it privately, I’d like to say the kid’s an idiot. Really. No matter who he does or doesn’t blame it on, he’s a grade-A nimrod.

Had he been juggling flaming torches with little to no previous juggling experience, and subsequently burned himself, he’d also be an idiot, but, probably no more so than most 15-year-old males are, from time to time. (As Rilch spelled out pretty well.) I’d feel bad for the kid, though it’d make me chuckle, provided he did indeed only receive 1st degree burns for it. He got off awfully light. (upon preview: Damn. No pun intended.)

But dousing yourself in an accelerant and lighting up, when you damn sure should know better? Sorry, sympathy for that I ain’t got. This wasn’t a plea for attention, or a suicide attempt (no straw men, I know no one’s made this arguement) this was just being really fucking stupid.

[sub]Yeah, I was being an idiot. But I didn’t try to burn myself, I was carelessly stupid.[/sub]

Both times that happened in my family, it was a real fiasco.
