King of the Nerds wasn't horrible

It’s a new reality show on TBS. The ads made it look stupid and awful but I kept reading reviews that said it was not bad so I checked it out. I liked it.

It is definitely a reality show. It hits all the same beats those shows hit which makes some of it seem a little tired but I liked the mix of people. They were not the stereotypes from central casting that I feared and all seemed like people I would like and reminded me of me and people I know.

The house and the challenges also seemed to be designed by people who know and love nerd culture (I mean a part of the prize is you get to sit in something called the Throne of Games which looks exactly like you would imagine something with that name looking).

I would suggest checking out episode one. I was surprised.

I watched it and was reasonably entertained. The final challenge was actually pretty cool in that it did require some skill but wasn’t as boring to watch as I would have expected. I’ll continue watching.

Just watched the first one – liked it quite a bit. It’s a well-rounded cast, (boxing potential spoiler) …the “last picked” twist was perfectly played and fit the theme to a T,…and it seems like they have a good mix of everything Nerddom (with one glaring omission – not a single person mentioned Star Wars, nor is there anyway SW stuff around in what’s supposed to be a Nerd mecca. Either they’re hiding it for later, or they were unable to secure any licensing).

The final head-to-head wasn’t as imaginative as I’d have thought it would be, but it was still a reasonably good finish. Although…

…Alanah (last picked girl) definitely set herself up as being useless. In addition to coming off as a self-pitying crybaby, she also declared herself a “chess expert”, and promptly blew that test. Next time blue is vulnerable, she’s definitely the one they’re sending.

At first I thought they were all actors because they were far too pretty. Even Alana, who is more of a dork than a nerd, is overweight but cute.

And the guy who sings Bust A Move in the promos-- I find him oddly handsome and yet. . . strange. His mouth is far too wide for his face. He reminds me of the scary girl vampire in Fright Night.

I ate cheetos while watching this; should have had Mountain Dew, too. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hate reality shows. I mean I really, really hate them. And I can’t believe I’m going to start bitching about Alanna being such a whiny bitch that I have zero idea why she’s on the show at all, except to give them someone to boot. I mean, really, wtf?

And now I feel like I should be shaking my braids at the tv and yelling 'You go, girl!" at…someone. Something. I don’t want to like this show! And I’m not sure I do.
But I’mma gonna watch the next one, just in case. :stuck_out_tongue:

Poor Blue Team or Blaxphemia (or whatever is that really stupid name they made up), the lost their best guy and kept the most useless player and their most annoying one.

The hooves on stilts were very nice.

Isn’t the Blue Team now one person less than the Orange?

Oh man. I was cringing with embarrassment watching the Blue team doing their cosplay. Especially Alana.

I didn’t get the Alana hate from last week. She seemed more sad and just a Nerd’s Nerd but this week I kind of see it. She is inching her way into Pathetic.

I wonder if the teams realized those names would be permanent when they made them up or if they thought they would just be for that one challenge because they were both kind of lame.

That Cosplay challenge really was lopsided wasn’t it? Did Blue spend any time at all coming up with their skit?

Blue spent too much time chasing after Virgil. And, although Alana’s split-personality skit was, well, terrible, I cringed more at Genevive’s orphan song and dance.

Also, I am developing a crush on weird mouth guy. I did not watch the ‘extra’ where he’s drunk but that was only because it was late and I was already in bed.

or the Mongooses, that’s a good team name. “The Fighting Mongooses.”

I too hate hate hate reality TV, but find myself compelled to watch it. Yep, I’ve been sucked in. sigh

Blue team confused me. They all decided on a Steampunk theme, then no one (except maybe Genevive) actually did anything like that.

Pink-haired girl does strange things to me, expecially in that flowery elf outfit she was wearing in last night’s ep.

Both contestants in the Nerd-off knowing pretty much all the answers to the questions posed impressed me. That they really are nerds, that is.

Meanwhile, I thought the twist that originally got Alana onto the show was brilliant, but since then she’s pretty much destroyed any good will I may have had with her inept stage-managing and insufferable whining.

Joe did get the Narnia question wrong. Which was his undoing.

Man, Brandon is gone and Virgil and Alana persist. I don’t like anyone on Team Blaxploitation.

I think I’ve run out of endearing nerds to root for. Everyone left is either a jerk or annoying or both. Genevieve isn’t terrible as long as she doesn’t sing, I suppose. (Kinda reminds me of what Fred from Angel would be like if she was a real, normal looking person, and not played by a gorgeous actress.) Moo hasn’t ticked me off yet, so maybe I’ll root for her.

If there’s one thing this show has highlighted about nerds, it’s our lack of social skills… :stuck_out_tongue:

I liked both people who competed in that Nerd Off. Brandon seemed like a fun guy to talk to and Pink Hair (Michelle? Bad with names) is cute and plays Starcraft.

This show really is a typical reality show just with Nerds but the fact that they are all Nerds and really smart makes it better somehow.

Exactly. Brandon was the last person left that I would invite over to my house for an evening of board games or watching Star Trek. Danielle (Pink Hair) is cute and plays Starcraft, I won’t argue, but unless she’s the victim of a bad edit, she’s not the kind of person I’d want to hang out with. Makes for great drama on a reality show, though…

Yeah, Moo seems very sweet and guileless, and has pretty much flown under the radar so far. I, too, was sorry to see Brandon go. 2nd work in a row that the girls have beaten the boys in an aptitude/“physical” challenge in the NerdOff.

I also like the blue team’s gamer girl–Christine? She seems pretty nice, though a few others I don’t have much feeling toward one way or the other (yet).

Celeste, I think.

I’m impressed that they mostly have real, honest-to-god nerds.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who is enjoying this show. Every time there has been a nerd-off, the person I wanted to win, lost. Couldn’t Danielle understand that, although she’s been a good team player so far, most of her best skills have been used up. She’s good at cosplay and gaming, and they’ve had cosplay and gaming challenges and probably won’t again. People voting to send her to the nerd-off wasn’t personal, it was the best decision for the team to keep members on the team who are strong at what future challenges may bring.

I reallllllly dislike Danielle. Her whole thing was basically “You are voting for me!? Why!? ::cry cry cry I’m just an emotional female cry cry cry::: …I was probably going to vote for *you *, but I hadn’t decided yet! How dare you vote for me!”

Then when Whathisname told her he would then vote for himself, she was all “Ha ha! My tears worked! I got him to vote for himself, I totally played him!”

But when it’s revealed that he instead played her, ooh it’s so horrible and how dare he do such a thing.
