For real this time, after last week’s false alarm.
Last week in a staggering turn of events Major Victory got eliminated but heart-warmingly learned from his daughter that he is her hero. sniff
Tonight, the final elimination. Fat Momma or Feedback, one will fall and the other will arise as the newest superhero. For once, I’m totally fine with whoever wins one of these reality contests. Usually there’s one amongst the finalists who I loathe (I’m looking at you, you dirty filthy hippies) and they take home the grand prize (yeah, you too, “geniuses”) but any of the final three would have been for me a completely satisfying choice. If I had to root for someone I’d choose Fat Momma, but it’s like 51-49 in her favor.
Actually, I thought FM’s “trailer” looked a lot better than Feedback’s. Yeah, he did more of the stunts (which they didn’t actually use in the trailers) and did them better, that was hardly surprising, but I thought FM was more dynamic and that her trailer showcased her powers better.
The cynic in me does think that Feedback, as an in-shape white man, won out over the fat black woman because of the better commercial possibilities.
Ehhhh… I suppose that’s an entirely subective thing, but I thought that while her trailer was longer and more involved, she ended up looking silly in a bad way. Her little ‘angry dance’ with the giant chick made me cringe.
It might be because of commercial properties, but by the same token, FM might’ve made a really great motivational speaker for grade schools but I thought from the first episode that she should’ve been cut. A thin athletic guy who can do a spin-kick on a dime strikes me as a cooler superhero than an overweight woman carrying donuts. I don’t see many kids buying a comic book based on a superhero who would probably be wheezing after an extended chase. YMMV, of course.
This series was such a refreshing surprise! I think this is the first reality show I’ve seen in which I liked both of the finalists equally well. Sure, there was a lot of corny, scripted stuff, but there were also some genuine moments. The enthralled, delighted look on the face of Fat Momma’s little boy was worth a lot.
I hope there will be a second season. I’m not a big comics fan, but Stan Lee is my new hero.
The thing is, Feedback really, really wanted to be a superhero and Fat Momma wanted to bea ninspiration to her kids. They both got exactly what they wanted.
As for the alleged commercial value of a Feedback comic vs Fat Momma comic, I don’t see much potential for either. The only reason the characters are interesting is because they were live-action improv’d. It’s not like there just aren’t enough superhero character conceptions out there…there are plenty. The comic and the TV movie aren’t likely to be very interersting. The comic is a prize for the winner, I can’t imagine anyone involved with the show has any illusions that it’s gonna be a hit…a few fans of the show might buy it, but beyond that?
I was actually expecting Fat Momma to win, just because she’s so different from most superheroes. I got the impression that Stan did the show because he was tired of the same old, same old, and wanted an inspiration for a completely new character. But I can’t complain about Feedback winning, either… He did well.
C’mon, the prize is a SCIFI channel movie – the only thing that keeps them from being the worst movies on TV is the fact the TBN keeps trying to make movies.
I actually think the comic has some potential, but the market is awash in so much, no matter how good, it will never compete, even with the series and movie to back it up.
… I think you guys miss a very important bit about the prize. Nowhere do they say “A sci-fi original movie based on this character will be made.” It clearly states they will APPEAR in a sci-fi original movie. That is huge difference. Feedback could appear on a tv screen in a hotel bar in one scene in a movie about giant gnats attacking Baja. Which I fully expect to be the case. It was clear from their trailers that neither Fat Momma or Feedback are actors.
Feedback deserved it more. Fat Momma accomplished her goal of being a role model to her kids. I honestly thought Fat Momma would get eliminated last week and it would be MV and Feedback. Major Victory would win but Stan would then call out to Feedback and say something atrociously hokey like “All great heroes… need a sidekick.” And then they would reveal a new comic cover that would have Major Victory and Feedback on it.
About the episode itself… kind of lame… 15 minutes of recap was unnecessary. I would have liked to have seen another actual challenge and then the stunt school stuff as the last bit right before the annoucement.
So Feedback performs better at the final challenges, both in quality and quantity, but Fat Momma has better-edited trailer, so she should have won? The better qualified, more proficient person won the contest. Period.
Having said that, an examination of the various challenges favored an athletic, physically fit candidate, because, the culture of superheroes has never, ever embraced a physically unfit person. Even the disabled specimens are generally speaking supoerbly conditioned otherwise.
Lee couldn’t win this one either way. If Fat Momma had won, people would be claiming that she won because she was unfit, black, female or a combination of all three.
And given the generally abyssmal quality of the sub-zero budget, filmed in Eastern Europe Sci Fi “movies”, I can’t see the endgame prize as anything more than a novelty.
The endgame prize is a comic book by Stan Lee. SciFi’s movies are, in general, bad, but Stan Lee’s comic books, in general, are good. And a comic book would be valued by any of the sort of people who would do this show. The movie’s just an added bonus to the prize, to hopefully hold the interest of the illiterate masses for whom a comic book is too much reading.
And this would stop the SciFi channel from making a movie starring them, how?
Hm. Well, I think that I said that I thought FM was more dynamic as well. I thought that of the two of them, she performed better in the trailer. I didn’t say that she should’ve won on that basis.
