You probably could, but wouldn’t you rather join us?
Well, if all else fails, I’ll join you guys.
I don’t know what the deal on the Robogoose was; some people got them fairly quickly while others took forever to get one.
You can hate me by the way… I got a Robogoose on the first egg I tried. Then made about a half-million meat selling the rest.
I’ve got a little over 160 in my display case right now. Maybe I’ll toss a stack into the clan stash when I get out of hardcore.
And my first hardcore run (3rd run overall) was an Oxycore run. I’ll probably start making them again someday, but I want to finish building up my skill set first. I only do hardcore runs now though; I’ve never gone back to normal or casual.
Once I get a complete plexiglass set I’ll either start on Bad Moon or start basement diving. (I really want a telescope for my campsite.)
Ok, tell me about Bad Moon.
If I can ever get this stupid key I’m trying Bad Moon next. I expect it to be extremely frustrating.
Hey, just wanted to thank capybara and the clan for everything.
I tried tKoL once before and just couldn’t get anywhere, having a clan makes a big difference!

Bad Moon is for the people who think Hardcore is too easy and want more challenge.
Basically there are four modes you can reincarnate in after you defeat the game. Casual, Normal (aka Softcore), Hardcore and Bad Moon.
In Casual you just keep playing. I’m not too sure about it because I’ve never done it and actually don’t know anyone who has. I think you have access to all your stuff and skills immediately but am not sure.
In Normal all the stuff you accumulated during your previous run(s) is placed in Hagnks Ancestral Storage in Seaside Town. You can pull a limited number of items or a limited amount of meat from Hagnks each day until you pass 1000 turns, at which point you can pull all of it. (As an aside, this 1000 turn period is known as Ronin.)
Any familiars you gained remain in your terrarium but their weight goes back to 0.
Also, each time you ascend you get to mark one skill you earned during that run as permanent. In softcore all skill you have previously marked as permanent are available to you.
In Hardcore there are more restrictions. You cannot pull any items or meat from Hagnks until you have freed the King. Also, you cannot buy items from the mall or flea market and gain no benefit from most clan items. (No meat tree, for example.)
You do have access to skills you have marked permanent but only if you marked them as permanent from previous hardcore runs; skills made permanent from softcore runs are not available.
Any familiars you gained remain in your terrarium but their weight goes back to 0.
Bad Moon is an even harder hardcore. As before, you have no access to items or meat from Hagnks. You also have no access to skills from earlier runs and your terrarium is empty. (Your familiars are safe and will still be there when you leave Bad Moon, but you cannot access them during your Bad Moon run.)
Additionally, various bad things will happen to you during the run. In general, anything that gives you a benefit in one area will take something away in a different area.
Ffinally, you cannot automatically choose to enter Bad Moon; you have to qualify. In order to qualify, you have to… (spoilered per standard KOL policy)
make an entire run without using a single clover. If you do, the next time you reincarnate then Bad Moon will be available as an option.
Of course, the rewards for completing a Bad Moon run are quite good.
Hope this helps.
Mostly what** tanstaafl** said, but I’ll add that there is content available in Bad Moon that is not available during other flavors of ascension. Some non-combat adventures, a non-adventure area similar to the Seaside Town, etc.
It’s basically one step up in difficulty.
From easiest to least easy:
Casual
Normal
Hardcore
Hardcore restricted (either Teet or Booze - so either no food or no booze)
Hardcore Oxy (no food and no booze)
Bad Moon
Generally speaking, I think most of the various bad things are actually a net positive, though each bad thing does have a positive and a negative aspect.
Casual is a laugh and a half. I did a casual run because I was entering a speed HC run contest, and I had a week to kill – enough time to rip through a casual run and get one step closer to my Tour Guide and Confetti trophies.
All that happens in casual is you get knocked down to level 1 in whatever your new class is – but you still have all your skills and equipment.
I suppose if one were minorly determined, you could get every skill in the game in about a month
I’m trying to figure this game out, I’m at level 4 and manage ok at Degrassi Knoll or the Woods (vampire area) but still get my butt whipped on anything higher.
And the young impressionable pastamancer Sitnam sets out into the world of Loathing. I’ll join up as soon as i get enough levels to be able too.
Yay, more people!
Antinor, I don’t know how you feel about the KoL wiki but it has a lot of useful info on it, including this page that tells you the moxie required to adventure in an area without getting your butt whipped.
Having not seen it before, I had no feelings on the subject. Now I feel very good about it. Thanks for the link.
Perhaps I should have said, “I don’t know how you feel about the idea of a KoL wiki.”
Make sure you’ve got the best equipment and skills you can get at your level, meat permitting. Sometimes I think, hey, I’m really sucking here… and then I realize I’m still using a really crappy sword and I don’t have any pants.
I ascended today and started Bad Moon. Holy Christ on a cracker, I didn’t know how much I loved my skills and everything. I have a feeling I’ll have to do a ton of backfarming just because I forget about stuff I don’t have, like familiars.
If your using Firefox, you can add tKoL wiki as a search engine plugin.
Then answers to questions like “what do you do with a rat’s appendix anyway?” are just a right click away!

I discovered the joys of the hidden temple, nice quick stats!
Nitpick: no, if you could that would be broken. I’ve done a casual run (by accident; look for koldb.com and search for Disky, my casual run took a month because I burned out.), and you’re not allowed to perm a skill, precisely because you have access to everything from previous runs immediately, and the mall.
As Taber said, almost all of the effects in BM have a good side and a bad side, and usually the good part outweighs the bad; for instance, there is one adventure per element that gives you +20 elemental damage…but 1-3 damage to you per round. That’s quite painful if you take 7-10 rounds to kill a monster, especially if it’s immune to that element.
Personally, I’m doing BM solely for the brimstone rewards, so that I have them for doing the basement. I like regular HC just fine, and I’m looking forward to going back. Especially since my first HC run after this loop will be with Hero of the Half Shell permed and getting a Brimstone Bunker from King Ralph’s letter.
Oh, and Antinor, don’t bother with the Hidden Temple. You can get better stats on the Battlefield once you hit level 5. (And if you’ve unlocked Fernswarthy’s Tower; go to the Cemetary and your guild for more information.)
My bad. My casual run was so fast, I forgot.
