Kinky Friedman for Governor

Kinky’s not just a comedian, or even an entertainer. Kinky Friedman is…himself. The Kinksta abides, man. Another good Kinky thread, this one from Cafe Society.

He’s going to be on tomorrow night on Leno:

Kinky will win. In my heart, that is. Out there in the real world, that ass-clown Perry will win.

Funny, when Strayhorn announced she was running as an independent, my first thought was, “damn, that’s gonna take votes away from Kinky”.

I wish Strayhorn and Bell would both drop out of the race and endorse Kinky.

YES!!

Kinky — Santorum, why not both?

I don’t know what the current political climate is like in Texas, but it can be dangerous to disregard the disenchanted vote. It’s the primary reason Jesse Ventura got elected.

BTW, Ventura’s campaign guy is working for Kinky now.

Texas is SOLID Republican. I can’t imagine Perry losing unless he gives a “Rape is like the weather…” comment.

Rick Perry can safely disregard the disenchanted vote.

In 2002, the Democrats ran a VERY strong slate of candidates, three men who were well known, well financed, respected, competent, intelligent, articulate, and on the whole, fairly conservative. Heck, in many states, Tony Sanchez, Ron Kirk and John Sharp could have run as Republicans! But none of them won, or even came all that close.

Again, I don’t think highly of Rick Perry as an administrator. I think Texas needs someone much better. But my hunch is, the GOP is so strong and its adherenets so loyal, Friedman, Strayhorn and whatever Democrat gets the nomination will be fighting for the 40% of the vote Perry won’t get.

If that happens, Kinky could certainly come in second. A lot of Democrats are liable to take some small pleasure in voting for Kinky, rather than for whatever nonentity the Democrats nominate this time.

For now, the Dems’ best bet is to sit tight for a few years, and hope to retake the state when the Hispanic voting base is larger, more energized and more powerful.

I’m thinking the best thing for TX might be for Perry to win, as did Bob Taft, and then for Perry to tumble in popularity. The school finance mess isn’t fixed and when the tax increases kick in, some people are not going to be happy.

Taft beat Tim Hagan by an overwhelming majority in 2002. Now, he is the least popular governor in the United States and the Democrats have a good shot at retaking Ohio.

But will things go straight to Hell in Texas, or will they simply muddle along for quite a while?

I agree that Perry has handled all kinds of things badly, and NOT handled numerous things that should be high priorities. But many of these things won’t become real crises for years to come, by which time he could be long gone.

The one and only thing the Democrats have going for them is that Hispanic Texans are usually Democrats… when they bother to vite at all, that is. If Hispanic voters ever USE their potential clout, the Democrats can make a huge comeback. But so far, for reasons I can’t fathom, the huge potential Hispanic vote just refuses to be tapped. Even Tony Sanchez’s candidacy for governor didn’t seem to stir much interest.

I’m not sure yet what it will take for Hispanic Texans to become a juggernaut at the polls… for now, I’m still hoping the Dems don’t figure it out, either!

I think kinky has a good chance of winning. Every republican I meet hates Perry. I see more kinky bumper stickers every day, and many hard core republicans I know are going to vote for him. Strayhorn running as an independant will pull votes away from perry in a HUGE amount. Many Republicans I talk to who wont vote for Kinky want to vote for strayhorn. If she gets enough signatures to get on the ballot then Kinky will probably get it. Most dems are going to vote for Kinky. Most of the green party guys are going to as well.

I’ll be signing the petition when it is available, and yesterday I gave Kinky’s local campaign office permission to set up a table in my coffee shop to gather signatures. I’m working on a deal with them to sever Kinkys Salsa in my shop to. If you havent tried it, its pretty bad ass salsa. I provided coffee for one of his events already and met the man. Seemed like a decent guy.
75 percent of Texans didn’t even vote last time. Thats a huge pool for Kinky to draw from.

True, a lot of Republicans don’t like Perry. But, there is no outrage over anything Perry has done. If Perry would have been blamed for a tax increase or been out manuvered by Hutchison last year, Perry would be in trouble. I think most Republicans will hold their nose and vote for Perry.

How about Republicans taking on a controversial illegal immigration measure? Something similar to California Prop 187 in Texas?

A lot of people are outraged over the educatioin issue. Like just about anyone with a kid in public school around here.

I want to believe that, really I do. But having followed politics around here as long as I have, I am fairly confident in predicting the outcome of this election:
[ul]
[li]Perry - 54%[/li][li]Dem Candidate (whoever it is) - 40%[/li][li]Strayhorn - 3%[/li][li]Friedman - 2%[/li][li]Libertarians and Greens combined - 1%[/li][/ul]

Interesting, but the zogby poll done a while back showed kinky already getting 21 percent of the people who VOTED last time. I doubt his numbers are going to go down unless he does or says something tragic. In fact, when that poll was done Many people I talked to hadn’t even heard of the man. Now everyone coming into the coffee house is talking about him, and I’m even seeing Kinky bumper stickers on peoples laptops.

I’m not saying he is going to win, because anything can happen. But he’ll get a hell of lot more than 2%

Ah…Found it

I hope you’re right, bdgr, I really do. But I’ve seen many times where people are all agog over some third-party candidate, where it sounds like there is popular support, but then the actual election comes and you wonder what the hell happened.

Ah well. Meet back here in November?
