I see Kinky Friedman is collecting signatures to be an independent candidate on the Texas ballot for governor.
Okay, this is funny and fun, but is it for real?
Would you vote for Kinky? “Why the hell not?”

I’m considering it. He’s obviously a fairly smart guy, his political views, near as I can tell from the rather slender info available at his web site, are close to mine, and I like what I’ve heard so far regarding his view on education and the (IMO) excessive use of the eath penalty in this state.
I’m reserving my decision, however, until I see whether he gets on the ballot, and when I can see more about his actual platform than I’ve managed to find so far.
Er, “death penalty”.
I’m only voting for him in spirit. Since he doesn’t have a snowballs chance in hell, a vote for Kinky is just a wasted vote. Plus, he’s a little short on platforms and ideas.
I have a relative who is/was aiming to be “The Official Band of the Kinky for Governor Campaign”. The band’s name is “The Pluckin’ Idiots”. He he!
He’s for real. I doubt I’ll be voting for him, but it’s certainly not out of the question. I’m undecided and plan on staying that way until much closer to the election. I would be happy to sign the petition to get him on the ballot, though.
I’m leaning towards voting for him, but still undecided as of right now. Will sign the petition, though.
Nope. While he’s identified some of our problems, I find that he really doesn’t have any definite solutions, other than to say he’ll fix it, somehow. I like his concerns, but I am underwhelmed by his solutions.
I saw your thread and I remember two others. I found 3 others in a search.
Maybe these will help:
Kinky Friedman running for Gov. of Texas from **silenus ** Last Ides of March
Tell me about Kinky Friedman, the artist. from **Big Bad Voodoo Lou ** last October
Kinky Friedman for Governor from **twickster ** this January.
Hope they might help,
Jim
No. Not a chance.
The only people who WILL end up voting for Kinky are Democrats who realize their candidate has no prayer, and figure that if they have to vote for a sure loser, they’d rather vote for the sure loser who gives them a few laughs.
Incumbent Rick Perry will win easily, which is a shame in many ways. Speaking as a far right winger, I think he’s a terrible administrator, and has been an ineffective governor. He may share my basic ideology, but he’s proven inept at the basic, practical tasks of running a large state.
But right now, Texas is so solidly Republican, he’d have to be MUCH worse than he is to lose.
NO. I don’t like vanity candidates.
I haven’t decided if I’ll vote for him, but I am planning to sign the petition to get him on the ballot.
It’ll be a wasted vote, but yeah, I’ll sign the petition. And probably vote for him.
I will vote for him. I like the “no-bullshit” things I have seen from his interviews. He may be a bit weak on experience, but hey lets face it, the governor position in the state of Texas is so weak it really doesn’t matter who gets elected.
I would rather have someone with a sense of humor in this position than a total dick cheese, a la Perry. YMMV
My coffee shop is a signature collection point. Nearly everyone who walks in the door signs. I just talked to a guy from the campaign today and he said that yesterday out of the 60 people he asked to sign (just going up to people on the street) 52 signed the petition, and only a few of those (four I think) were disqualified. One of the volunteers got 80 valid signatures in one day just walking up to people cold. It’s looking good so far. I talk to more and more hard core republicans every week that are voting for him, and he’s not even on the ballot yet. It should be a hell of a show.
I will sign his petition. I deliberately didn’t vote in the Primary so I would be eligible.
“Save yourself for Kinky”.
Now this is the way politics is supposed to be … I love it.
BTW, Kinky Friedman salsa rocks. You can buy it at his website and proceeds benifit his animal rescue. I just ordered four cases. Litterally the best salsa I’ve ever had anywhere…especially the black eyed pea stuff. Kroger carries it down here as well.
Im definately signing the petition, and probably voting for him. The democratic candidate doesn’t stand out in any way, and so far Perry hasn’t dazzled me in any way. I might be wasting my vote, but it is one more vote for a candidate that at least shares some of my beliefs.
I don’t ever think a vote casted is a vote wasted.
I think it can be. Our duty as citizens is to use our vote in whatever way we think will benifit our country the most. So in my opinion that mean voting for a candidate who hasn’t got a snowballs chance of winning in order to make a point can be a wasted vote if its a close race because your vote could possibly prevent the worst candidate on the ballot from taking office. People voting for Nader in Florida for example.
That isn’t the case here. I think Kinky has a chance to win it. But even if he doesnt win it, the dems don’t have a chance to win Texas anyway.
It’s actualy rare these days that I talk to someone who ISN"T going to vote for Kinky. You just never know. Remember the Freak Power Party very nearly took control of Aspen because they got the people who wouldnt normally vote to go to the polls. I think Fat City Colorado would have been a great name.
