Hear, hear. I’ll be at opening night for Criminal. And then I’m going home to re-watch Secretary. And if you Kirsten fans don’t believe me and Evil Captor, go watch Mona Lisa Smile to compare them side by side. Maggie gets a one-note part, but the scene where she’s waiting out in the cold for her favorite teacher to show up… whew. Almost breaks your heart.
Not that I am hating on Miss Dunst. She is a fine young woman whom I would not kick out of bed unless asked nicely by my fiancée, and seeing her in a film with Eliza Dushku – and in cheerleader uniforms, no less – was a treat which I could not have imagined when I was a younger man. I adore her plain and simple.
It was while watching this scene from Get Over It that I realized that Ms. Dunst had a certain special something.
BTW, the film is worth watching for many other reasons. The opening scene (set to “Love Will Keep Us Together”) is great.
I just saw Spider-Man 2 in IMAX, and was quite impressed with the acting abilities of both Ms. Dunst and Tobey Maguire. It was amazing how subtle their facial reactions were on that 80-foot-wide screen.
While I appreciate your opinion, I must point that I didn’t like those movies nor the Streepster in them. But, there you go with the taste differences, eh?.
Too bad I don’t rule Hollywood. Whoa! Nothing but Johnny Depp and numerous babe actresses, some even good, doing well thought out and relevant hard core sci-fi porn.
Oh shoot! I kept looking at that thinking there was something wrong with it. Dang it, that’s one of the few math concepts I thought I had mastered. Perhaps my brain just wouldn’t let me put Melanie at the top of a “greater than” list?
A friend of mine has done some extensive research on this point (for his master’s thesis, I think). After searching the Web for hours, I… I mean he couldn’t find any nude pix of Kirsten anywhere. The scene in my link and the rain scene in Spider-Man are about as good as it gets.
It’s so nice to see that there are still some truly virtuous actresses in Hollywood who haven’t succumbed to the temptation to disrobe in public. (Bitch.)
Meh. Nice tits in a wet shirt. Other than that, pretty face, teen-du-jour onscreen presence that does nothing to distinguish her from any of the other Julia Styleses and Hillary Duffs of the world. Quite frankly, I’m getting increasingly bored with the current crop, and won’t miss them when they fade to inevitable obscurity.
I know in the movie Crazy/Beautiful, she had filmed some more risque scenes with her costar Jay Hernandez but they were edited out to make the film more appropriate with the targeted teen audience. I don’t think they were nude, but had some obvious sex going on…
A quick check at the cndb (which I assume stands for the “Celebrity Nude Database” - work-safe on the page I have linked to - it merely describes scenes Dunst has been in and their relative inclusion of nudity - not much at all - but you might end up a link or two away from nudity, so be careful)…
I’m with lissener, too. Bring it On is exceptional for its genre, and Kirsten shone in it. Any other actress would have been overshadowed by Eliza Dushku’s performance. Surrounded by mediocre actors and passable writing, Kirsten was quite impressive. The same could be said for her role in Eternal Sunshine, and Mona Lisa’s Smile.
Maybe she doesn’t stand out in Spiderman because she’s surrounded by more talent, but I think she’s still competant. Her role there is smaller and far less interesting. I’ll buy the timing skill, I never really thought about it. I knew there was a reason I wanted to see Wimbledon!
As for Meryl Streep, I got over thinking she was overrated when I saw The River Wild. The woman can act. She just, for some reason, chooses repulsive roles.
Melanie Griffith’s career trajectory is one of those things you don’t want to get me started on. But when she hit in Body Double, there was a lot of Oscar buzz. And more buzz accompanied Something Wild. If you’d watched her work from then forward, you’d probably have a different view of her. She’s an unlimitedly talented actress, but she has a voice that annoys some people (though it’s not nearly as squeaky as her mother’s) and a public life that annoys many, me included.
She’s one of those few actors whose career I find myself following pretty closely. She has chosen–or desperately accepted–some thin roles, but she’s never failed to invest them with a real and solid humanity. And of course she was an entire hoot in Cecil B. Demented.
I’ve got to disagree with you. I think the current “crop” are, by and large, pretty faces, but Eliza Dushku, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, and a few of the other girls of this most recent generation are genuinely good actresses - scripts from George Lucas and Penny Marshall notwithstanding.
It’s a shame that Mona Lisa Smile didn’t go over very well – I blame the weak script – because today’s batch of starlets could pull off something as good as an all-female The Usual Suspects or Dead Poets’ Society. A remake of Steel Magnolias is all wrong, but a powerful drama or suspense film with a mostly young female cast would be a great vehicle for these young ladies.
