Okay, so I’ve heard that Krispy Kreme Donuts are something special but so far nothing’s been said on what makes them so special. This, so far, has not even registered as a blip on my radar map. But today it was announced that KK is coming into the RI market opening 16 new stores here this year. So now I’m rather forced to ask if this is something I’m really looking forward to (and why) or is this just another big yawn on the Rhode Island culinary landscape.
Hmm. See if you can get them to serve coffee milk in their stores so I can get some out here on the West Coast, Euty!
I’ve had KK, and they’re good. But I didn’t think they were any better than Dunkin’ Donuts. No worse, but not truly outstanding.
Krispy Kreme just opened its first store here in New Orleans. KK had to hire off duty police to direct the traffic. It’s a friggin mess. I think the waite is about 30 minutes to get doughnuts. To hell with that. It’s all about marketing.
I suggest you should use the archives Euty, you would have seen this question has been asked recently http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=51191 you don’t want to get the moderators mad a you… :ducks and runs:
Euty, as someone mentioned in the earlier thread, your kids will love going to Krispy Kreme to watch the donuts being made in the automated see-through grease bath. My 3- and 7-year olds were mesmerized for a solid hour–it’s now on my (nearly) free kid entertainment list with the library and the McDonald’s ball pit.
KK is just about the best CHAIN do-nut shop. Yes, local faves, suchs as Lous here is San Jose, are better. However, even Lous can’t match KK big claim to fame- FRESH, HOT do-nuts. If you want do-nuts still warm at most places, you gotta be there at 5AM or something. KK has them hot & fresh almost half the day.
Oh Euty darling, I was once a disbeliever also.
These donuts melt in your mouth. Persephone, DD are good, but not nearly as light and delicate as a KK doughnut. The glaze on a DD is sloppy and too thick. KK glazes their doughnuts with a thin sheet of yumminess. As the doughnuts come out of the fryer, they pass under the cascading sheet of glaze, coating it in sugary deliciousness.
And it isn’t just the glazed- the devil’s food has the same delectable glaze and the crullers are to die for.
True, the 30 minute wait is ridiculous, but KKs are so worth it.
All I can say is, try one freshly made, and you will never go back to DD or any <gasp> grocery store for your doughnuts again.
Oh man. Now I gotta drive up there…wanna come?
I think that’s the key–when they are fresh and warm, Krispy Kremes are, IMO, better than any other doughnuts. Conversely, once they start to age, they lose their appeal more rapidly than other doughnuts.
Which indicates that your taste in donuts is questionable, at best.
Odieman, it turns out this is the FOURTH “What’s the deal on KK?” thread! Can I pronounce the horse dead?
The doughtnuts are made of potato flour, which adds to the better flavour of them. Plus they’re not too heavily glazed IMO. Krispy Kreme is the god of all glazed donuts.
Ahhhh, you poor, poor Americans and otherwise Non-Canadians
It’s such a shame some of you may never truely know the pleasure of Tim Hortons, THD, Timmies, Horny Tim’s, etc, etc.
Doughnuts, cakes, soup, and the coffee… my lord the coffee…
Yep, Europe got culture, America’s got lotsa bombs, but Canada, man, we gots Doughnuts.
Upham
I think I read somewhere that these babies were cooked in lard. Yes, lard! That’s possibly part of the appeal. Delicious, delicious lard.
We have Tim Hortons here in Michigan. I’ve never tried the coffee there, but my husband says it is one of the best coffees he has ever had. However, neither one of us was particularly impressed with the doughnuts from there. They tasted the same as Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme.
Shadowfox that’s cause you’re getting the American doughnuts! Do you really thing we’d let the secret out of Canada?? Also, for reasons i’ll never know Canadian THD Coffee is better then American THD Coffee (thinking i’m an ultra nationalist? Man, i don’t even LIKE coffee)
At a Detroit area Krispy Kreme they hand out free doughnuts to those waiting in line. Not sure if this is the practice at all KK stores.
A free KK doughnut was the first time I had a HOT doughnut from there. It was culinary ecstasy. I could eat and eat those things.
Dunkin’ Donuts pale in comparison. The cruellers leave this funny glaze on my mouth, though a fresh chocolate honey dip from DD is damn tasty.
Tim Hortons has great coffee, slightly above average doughnuts. The thing I like about them is the variety of food they offer.
The thing is, after cooling, a glazed Krispy Kreme is still a damn good, if simple, treat, but isn’t more than a notch above most other places.
I think another reason for the popularity of KK is the marketing. With the doughnut making machine exposed, the relatively small menu and the fact that you can take a paper hat with you gives the place that simple charm that’s hip these days. Don’t fail to notice the merchandise line they have on display at the register.
Unfortunately, my last trip to Krispy Kreme came hours before the stomach flu hit me. Thus, I have to get over some weird Pavlovian association thing before I can eat one again.
Yes, yes, oh God, yes!!!
When KK opened up a shop in Van Nuys(CA), I personally waited in a line for an hour and a half in 90 degree heat in the middle of the afternoon. There were security personell for the line, and KK staffers were passing out bottles of water. I bought 2 dozen and while I was walking back to my car(had to park a block away), people were shouting bids for some of my loot! These long lines lasted for months!
Krispy Kremes glazed donuts will still taste fresh after sitting on your counter for 3 days!
I’ve never been able to get past the name… somehow Kreme shouldn’t be Krispy… y’know? But anyway… you say there is less glaze than on DD glazed? There isn’t enough on DD as it is… how can even less be better?
