Krispy Kremes — no big deal!

They recently opened up a Krispy Kreme shop just down the street from my mom’s house, right across the street from Dunkin’ Donuts. My hubby went to both stores and purchased one donut from each place, just for scientific purposes. He said the donuts from DD were better, in his humble opinion. Having never tried a donut from Krispy Kreme myself, I have no more to add to this particular discussion.

Blasphemers, the lot of you! If you haven’t had the piece of heaven with a hole in it hot, you don’t know what you are talking about. Those pups are gooood!

Am I the only person who finds them to be way to sugary? Eating a Krispy Kreme donut is like getting the fist of sugar.

Also, extra points subracted from any company that has cutesy intentional misspellings in their name.

However, if put in front of me, I will eat one. Mmmmm…sugar.

You from around there? Spent second through fourth grade to the west of town. Beautiful area.

DING DING DING DING!!!

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

NO doughnuts, but no doughnuts are better than beignets at Cafédu Monde with a cup or three of cafe au lait!

::marvels at the proliferation of food threads while she’s dieting::

GAH! What I wouldn’t do for a KK right now!

::Chokes on her own drool::

Mmmmmmm…beignets. Last time I was in New Orleans I went to Cafe Du Monde almost every day. By the end of the trip, I had mastered the art of not choking on the powdered sugar.

I think they are overrated because they were the subject of travelers’ tales.

Remember when Coors was considered grand because you could only get it other states? And now you know it’s ordinary?

It is a beautiful area, dropzone, but I can’t lay claim to being from there. I got my master’s there, though, and did a lot of bicycle-riding in the surrounding countryside, particularly to the west of town, toward the Blue Ridge.

I grew up just south of Alexandria, VA, not too far from that Krispy Kreme that dustMagnate mentioned.

Yeah, that’s where I lived. Nothing but farms between my front window and the mountains. Magnificent view.

Always liked the Alexandria/Arlington/DC area, too. Although it’s not like it was in '64, I’m sure.

<sigh> If my folks hadn’t moved (and I had a lick of sense) I’d have gone to the UVA, become a lawyer, and still lived there.

just think DD with triple the sugar

Don’t we all?

KK donuts are some of the best chain do-nuts. Winchells are terrible. Local one-shot places, like Lous in San Jose, are way better.

BUT- you can get KK donuts Hot & soft- a good % of the day. They are an order of magnitude better then. Other shops have them hot only at, say 4AM, and then they get less fress all day long.

Try this: Buy a DD donut. Bring it home. Wrap it in a paper towel and microwave it for 8 seconds. It’s heaven.

They have this donut type item in Hawaii called “hot malasadas” they are better than any ol’ donuts.

I noticed this thread had been resurrected. So on the way to work this morning I bought 2 1/3 dozen Spudnuts for my KK-weary comrades.

(For those who miss Spudnuts, there’s one on the corner of Venice and Sawtelle, just west of the 405 in West L.A.)

dustMagnate said "Back in the streaking days two friends and I once had donuts in the KK Rt 1 with tshirt and sandals but no pants.
No one noticed. weird place.

Donuts with no pants on? Weird place indeed!

Per the local news channel on the weekend, Krispy Kremes are coming to Canada.

Should be interesting.

You are all wrong-the best doughnut on earth (can’t say about other planes) is the “sopapilla”-which I have only found in new mexico: these are divine-with lots of honey butter, they are to die for! Unfortunately, new mexico is not within driving range-I live about 2000 miles away!
But if you ever get to taos NM-go to “Michaels” -the best green chile 9and sopapillas) on earth!

Is this thread STILL ALIVE?!?!? Jeeze, I got over my Krispy Kreme disappointment a month ago!

I’m not a big donut junkie by any means, but I will prefer a Krispy Kreme over any other donut (that I’ve ever tried so far, anyway). They’re definitely at their best if you can get them fresh 'n warm, but even a cold one is still better than anything Winchells puts out.

Mind you, only the standard KK glazed donuts deserve this affection. Their non-glazed chocolate/sprinkles/whatever donuts are just run-of-the-mill. But going to KK and not getting the glazed is like hiring Michael Jordan to play ping-pong…
