So, sucker that I am, I went into work today and pulled my usual routine of not being as efficient as I’d like to be, plus the usual bullshitting with the other suckers in on the weekend. The point being that if I’d left even 5 minutes earlier or 5 minutes later, this whole thing wouldn’t have happened.
I finally get my act together and leave and get on the highway (I-84 west out of Hartford, in case anyone cares). It’s the same routine as always. So I’m driving along in the far left lane (the highway entrance ramp becomes the far left lane) when all of a sudden I see a giant chunk of something flying towards me–it had been kicked up off the highway. I instinctively swerved to the right and there was a huge smash–whatever it was–I think it was a giant chunk of frozen snow that fell off a minivan a couple of cars in front of me and then got kicked up off the road–and it smashed my windshield. It was a little bigger than a cinder block and scared the fuck out of me.
I was only about 10 minutes from home so I drove home and called my insurance company. Get this: they’re not open on the weekends. If you are insured by Great American, get rid of them. Anyway, I’ve calmed down–I’m not hurt but I was shaken up. I found some shards of glass on the floor behind the driver’s seat so how I avoided getting cut, I don’t know.
Glad you are OK, I know that part of the road and can visualize it happening=(
Sucks that your insurance company isnt open weekends, but as long as you are OK now, you can at least be nice and relaxed when it comes time to call them on monday…snuggle the kitties and watch some comfort tv…
Holy crap that must have been scary! I have driven I-84 through Hartford many times myself and always thought it was a way more difficult section to drive than it needed to be…and this is coming from someone who regularly drives in the Boston area.
What the heck is on your bed?! It looks like a marshmallow! I just want to cuddle up on it. Oh, and the kitties are cute too
By the way, I’m glad you’re ok. I agree that particular stretch of highway (actully all the roads in CT), were designed by an idiot on drugs. And, that people who don’t clean off their cars deserve to be pelted with ice chunks.
congodwarf–The bed is actually a water mattress, with a feather bed on top of it, with a down comforter on top of that, so the kitties spend a lot of time on it…
You may find that your simple, flat windshield is less expensive to replace on your own than reporting it to the insurance company and paying the deductible + possible rate increase. By ‘replace on your own’, I mean pay someone on your own – although windshields are easy to replace, there isn’t much allowance for error or beginner’s mistakes.
Call some windshield places before calling the insurance company. Get their no insurance price. Sometimes they bargain with private payers – but never if an insurance company is paying the bill. I got the side window of a car replaced for less than half what it would have cost if the insurance had paid. I would have paid more if I’d used the insurance, because of the deductible.
