I think it might be good to define what trolling is, too. One of the reasons I don’t contest the ruling against Ms./Mr. Stream is that the poster accuses other people of trolling, yet seems to be performing the same action themselves. I’m sure Carol and I disagree on this, thus, I think a clear definition would help clarify the situation.
Motion granted.
Just to be clear, which of my posts that you warned me about were “threadshitting” (a bullshit, made up term meaning “We don’t like what you’re saying”)
As for the junior modding accusation, IME, a board is best regulated by the posters, not the mods. I may have a minority opionion, but I still dont think that people should post MPSIMS crap in the Pit. I’m not criticizing the Mods, the Rules, the Admins, or anything else. Just the members that apparently can’t control themselves. Why would a member post “I pit my sandwich”? Do you see the problem? I’m not pitting the Mods, but the idiot posters who do this. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS SO CONFUSING FOR YOU ALL.
I don’t understand why you think anyone is misunderstanding. The definitions for threadshitting and junior moderating perfectly describe what your posts were doing. None of the rules say anything about “criticizing the Mods, the Rules, the Admins, or anything else.” They do mention taking on the role of moderator (which you freely admit to doing, claiming it would be better that way), and going into threads, saying that the topic is beneath you; that it isn’t good enough.
I must admit, though, that I am a bit confused about threadshitting.
Until I read the definition, I thought threadshitting was merely coming into a thread, saying something dismissive about it, and having that derail the topic. I had trouble separating this from trolling, actually, as both seem to be intended to make the OP mad.
However, none of this seems to be in the formal definition. And, in almost every thread I’ve ever seen, someone will point out how the OP doesn’t have the right to complain about whatever they are complaining about, which seems to be not only allowed, but encouraged. You’re supposed to be able to make fun of the poster if their rant is bad, and that’s how pretty much every poster that is pitted responds.
So that’s the reason I think we need a clarification of what Gfactor means by these terms, in his own words. As it is, it seems that almost every Pitizen should be guilty of threadshitting.
To me, the bigger problem is that you continue to accuse people of trolling in the pit, like there’s something wrong with it. It seems to me like trolling is the entire purpose of the Pit: the whole point of a personal insult is to make the insulted mad. I never realized there was a prohibition on it in the Pit rules, and honestly, I don’t understand it, either.
So, in summation, it seems all of these rules could use some clarification. Gfactor, will you provide some?
- I quoted the offending posts as in the warning. Together they constitute threadshitting. I don’t see anything in the rule that requires me to base my warning on a single post.
- **Carol **: please tell me what you think the purpose of a mini-rants thread is.
- You were also trolling.
They can describe the same conduct. Threadshitting is sort of trolling by metadiscourse. “What a stupid thread.” “I can’t believe you started a thread raving about that guy.” Whatever. The distinction is fairly subtle in the Pit, but basically, threadshitting doesn’t require an intent to make the OP mad. It probably will, but the intent isn’t part of it.
To some extent, yes. But I don’t see that happening here. **Carol Stream ** thinks mini-rants belong elsewhere. She lost that argument.
The rule is somewhat relaxed in the Pit. I tend to limit it to the strict cases–yes, you can criticize the OP for having a weak complaint, or expressing it poorly. No, you can’t harass the posters in a thread in an attempt to trainwreck it.
This rule, too, is limited to fairly extreme cases. If you are participating in a thread and happen to toss out some insults, that’s just another day in the Pit. If you enter a thread, and every post you make is part of an obvious plan to trainwreck the thread by randomly insulting the posters, you’re trolling.
And yet you are one of the most prolific thread reporters in the Pit.
Other than to piss me right off, you mean?
Well, yes, that is the question. What is the point of a mini-rants thread? People can swear in MPSIMS, so that’s not a excuse. But for some reason, some people feel the need to bitch about lunchmeat in the Pit. For the love of God, why? There’s already a forum with Mundane, right in the title.
P.S. It’s poor form for a Moderator to openly snark on members of the SDMB on other boards. Just saying.
You got a link for that? Or are you just spouting off*?
*Can I accuse the Stream of whining or is that an insult?
Oh, I have a link all right. Just email me and you can have it.
When will she be allowed back into the Pit?
noon Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, December 12, 2009
Right, it’s all about YOU. We deliberately do thing to piss you off. No, actually we don’t.
You really think you’re someone important, don’t you?
Give it up already - you lost the argument about where the mini-rants go
If it pisses you off so much why do you read those threads? Seriously, why do you go into threads that upset you? That just doesn’t make sense. If you don’t like it don’t read it.
I flat out don’t believe you. Prove it.
I just did. Check your PM.
Oh goddamnit. It’s not against the rules to post a link to another board. It’s just not. Board wars are forbidden, but there have been thousands of posts to other boards. The Snarkpit was the one exception and I’m pretty sure even that rule has been overturned.
So, while I’m sure that it’s fun play “Secret Squirrel” and be all stealthy and garners you tons of attention–plus the totally vague accusations with the lack of a link make GFactor sound bad, which I’m sure had nothing to do with your dire hints of malfeasance, it’s really not all that productive.
Here’s what she’s talking about.
The question he’s asked is “What’s the hardest you’ve ever laughed at a post” and G-Man says something like “The Carol Stream “man-hands” thing”. That’s it. The “snark” is saying a post about her was funny.
Sure was more dramatic and awful sounding when Carol was being all mysterious about it, wasn’t it?
Which, I might add, I’d appreciate a link to the “man-hands” post.
Duh, that’s why I posted a smiley.
Actually, I wouldn’t mind so much if mini-rants were confined to just the one thread. But it seems that any moron with an internet connection is starting a new thread, and then some idiots have to respond and encourage them. I’m not exaggerating when I say that someone once pitted lunchmeat in this forum. IIRC, also soda, kitties, and Christmas. WHY?
Given the venom you have aimed at me publicly what in the world makes you think I would EVER open a PM by you? The last thing I need to do is give you an opportunity to heap hated and scorn on me in private as well as public! Your PM will be deleted without reading. Anything you have to say to me you can damn well either say in public or don’t bother.
Good lord - that’s not a snark!
Of course, it’s not news that a lot of people who can dish it out can’t take it.
WHY DOES IT BOTHER YOU? If you don’t like it don’t read it Get a hobby. Other than trying to police the Straight Dope BBQ.
You dont think this part is snark?
And I am asking you, in all seriousness, accusations of hijacking and junior modding notwithstanding, why can’t people post mundane shit in MPSIMS? What is so hard about clicking the right forum?
Are you a regular in MPSIMS? I don’t know. If you are, would you like it if someone routinely posted Pit threads in MPSIMS? Probably not. But you all don’t have a problem with folks posting MPSIMS threads in the Pit. I JUST DON"T GET IT.
