L.A. Earthquake? Everyone OK?

A friend in L.A. just e’d me, “earthquake!”

I assume she is not watching the movie and is trying to tell me you guys just had one out there? Was it bad? Everyone OK?

I’m watching the news and they suddenly started moving and were saying they were having an earthquake. They are reporting it was centered in San Simeon, CA (let’s hope Hurst Castle is ok!). That’s about 270 miles from me. I didn’t feel a thing.

6.5 located 7 miles below the earth. They are saying it was a gentle rolling quake and people thought they were sick, blood pressure bothering them, etc.

I hope everyone is ok.

From the USGS: 6.5 centered 7 miles north of San Simeon, about halfway between L.A. and S.F. Comparable in size to Northridge, Loma Prieta, Coalinga, etc.

Only felt a slow, rolling motion down here (S.F. Valley) – lasted about a minute and made me dizzy.

Hope Hearst Castle is ok.

Cute. Nothing’s shaking until after I leave. hmph

I guess since an actual Californian started another quake thread, the mods can close this one down . . .

Hell yes! We were swaying up here on the 5th floor of my building in Pomona (20 miles east of LA) for over a minute! LOL, and my supervisor was running around yelling “We should get out! Everybody leave!” while we were all trying to tell her to get the hell under a desk!

Urk I just heard that it was a 6.5 magnituide with the epicenter in Cambria - Dude, my whole dad’s side of the family lives in Cambria. My Auntie’s not picking up here phone at work, hope everything is ok!!!

Isn’t anybody going to thank Eve for asking? I think the way she phrased her thread title entitles her to it.

As for me, I work in a 9th floor office in El Segundo, just south of LAX, and yes we definitely felt it. It was strong enough that you couldn’t walk without staggering, but there was no damage. As noted above, the epicenter was a couple hundred miles north of us.

Unusually for earthquakes, I understand that many people are reporting motion sickness from the swaying.

I first thought that I was the one doing the swaying, feeling sick as I do.

We’re in southern Orange County. We only got rattling window blinds, even on the fourth floor. The accountant was on the ground eating, and never felt it at all. I’m guessing that San Diego county barely even noticed at all.

I keep being surprised at not finding news of something falling down in the web news reports. Usually there’s something without rebar that falls in that strong a quake. The 1987 Whittier quake was about that strong, and old brick walls fell onto cars.

Just as well someone famous didn’t die in this ‘quake, else we’d have 15 threads on the (two) subjects !! [sub] cough splutter wheeze cough [/sub]

From NBC Channel 4

Some one has died and it sounds like more could. :frowning:

Prayers and good thoughts going out to everyone.

Kathy

Wow, really? I live in Upland and I didn’t feel a thing…

Thanks for asking, Eve. I’m okay, except for sore legs from a mad 11-floor descent down the stairwell. I don’t stay too calm during an earthquake in a skyscraper.

Huh. My grandmother lives in Culver City and she didn’t feel a thing.

I really have to start paying attention to my feet.

I was sitting here at my desk in Anaheim and could swear I felt something, but dismissed it as my imagination.

Then Kathy called to tell me about the quake.

When we were at my sister’s house in Valencia several months ago we were sitting down, and I felt something in my feet. I said “Earthquake!” and just at that moment, a good-sized jolt hit. I seem to be able to feel them before they hit. Maybe the USGS should hire me.

Whew. Finally got through to my friend in Paso Robles - he and his family are ok. Big relief there.

Many thanks for the good thoughts, Eve. Nice to know us left-coasters aren’t forgotten by you socialites.

As this is a Mundane Pointless etc etc thread, can I just chime in by saying that I felt an earthquake from my house in London last year. I never thought I’d be in the right place at the right time, and thought it was really cool that boring old England had an earthquake!

I guess for people in California, it’s not quite so cool. Hope everyone is OK.

Can you hear them too? I fucking hate that sound…

I probably would have felt it slightly where I live (Manhattan Beach, very near LAX) but my whole family was in the car on the way up to Redding, CA. I think we were around Sacramento at the moment, so we didn’t feel anything.

And yes, as someone said a few posts ago, thank you very much for checking on us, and I hope everyone else is okay.

Lucky me, I called my parents house in Arroyo Grande and the stupid answering machine cut out in the middle of the message.
I thought the worse (like a home invasion and somebody cut the lines-- I blame this line of thinking on some rather strong pain-killers from surgery last week) and ten minutes later I try again and my Mom informs me of the trembler; she was driving and stopped to check for a blown tire; my father was at a Jiffy-Lube and stated, “that there was a bang (p-wave?) and then a steady increase in the metal buildings amplitude for 30 seconds and then a steady decrease for the next 30 seconds” and “the power went out and the Jiffy-Dip tried to pawn off 5W-30–I told him, ‘Sir, my car has always been treated with 10W-30!’” My father has strange sense of humor; the Jiffy-Dip was not impressed.

Oh and my sister’s microwave oven took a flying leap off of the shelf. Was getting old anyway…

I didn’t feel a thing down here. I’ve only noticed one earthquake in my life, that being the one in September of 2002. I was on the top half of a bunk bed at the time; my roommate beneath me didn’t notice at all.

Didn’t feel this one in the Bay Area, though it was said to be felt in San Francisco. I drive from the Bay Area to Santa Barbara once a year, and go past Paso Robles on 101. It’s a tragedy that two people, so far, were caught by the building.

I’ve only felt two quakes in the 7.5 years I’ve lived here. The very first quake I ever felt was in Champaign, Illinois, of all places.
