Ladies - have eyelash curler designs changed?

It’s time to finally replace my eyelash curler. The pad on the poor thing is coming apart and it’s caked with mascara. Yet I can’t find a suitable replacement. I’ve checked multiple stores, and all I can find are eyelash curlers with a flat or slightly convex pad on the bottom portion of the curler. I tried several brands and was greatly disheartened by the results - I might as well as not even bothered curling my lashes. My trusty current curler, on the other hand, has a u-shaped bottom pad that provides very satisfactory results. But for some reason I can’t find this type anywhere!

So is this the new trend in eyelash curlers? How can I find the old style? I’ve tried googling but to no avail…

I have both a MAC and a Shu Uemuraeyelash curler, and they are both curved like you mention I think?

I use a mini heated curling iron like this one, though not that brand. I actually got it at some outlet store for a few dollars and thought “I’ll give it a try and if it doesn’t work, no big whoop”, but I find it pretty effective. I haven’t used the kind you’re looking for in decades but I’ll be interested in everyone’s recommendations as it’s always fun to try new / revisit old stuff every once in a while.

**WOOKINPANUB **I’m jealous that worked so well for you! When I first heard about heated eyelash curlers I was really excited about the concept, because sometimes putting mascara on will weigh down my eyelashes and undo the curl. But if I had a heated curler, I could use it after the mascara!

Then I hunted around for one, and it took a while to find one. And when I finally found one, it didn’t work at all. I played around with a few things, like letting it heat up for longer, pressing it more or less firmly, different angles, stuff like that, but nothing worked. So I just went right back to my standard eyelash curlers.

I was sure that the curler should be used BEFORE application of mascara.
Is this wrong?

I’ve always curled before, which now explains why liirogue’s is caked with mascara and also possibly why the kind she’s talking about have never worked for me? Can one of you beautiful makeup aficionadas educate us, please? As for my heated one, I use it pre mascara after letting it heat up for the few minutes it takes me to put on the rest of my makeup. The wind of my soul, the reason we got different results may be in what we are trying to achieve. I mostly curl the lashes at the outter corners and actually sort of “straighten” the others, as opposed to trying to create an upward curl to all my lashes, if that makes sense. I can see how it might not work as well if you’re trying to achieve the same result as one of the traditional curlers.

You’re right, you curl before mascara so that the lashes don’t stick to the curler and come off. Though I’ve read that with heated curlers it’s okay to use afterwards, because you’re not clamping down on the lashes from both sides so you don’t run as great of a risk of pulling lashes out.

Oh, oops. I use my eyelash curler before and then again after applying mascara, and have never had trouble with sticking or pulling…

I do it before, and I “walk” it out, holding for a few seconds at a time, mascara right away. Huge difference.

Yep me too, exactly the same.

I do remember watching a Lisa Eldridge (famous UK make up artist) video where she mentioned some types of mascara don’t hold the curl as well (like, the waterproof ones do or they don’t, but I can’t remember which). So it could be your mascara is not holding the curl, rather than the curlers aren’t working?

yes same here

No it’s definitely the curlers. I can do one eye with my regular curler, looks great. Try the new curler on my other eye, and can’t hardly tell I even did anything to it…

That’s how I learned to use an eyelash curler, too.

I agree that the shape has changed; I think the “U” is less pronounced than it used to be. I don’t like my newer eyelash curler as well as my older one for that reason.
