Ladies: I need help finding the right pair of tights for Christmas!

No, they’re not for me - they’re for my notoriously picky grandma. I’m not even sure that any manufacturer makes what she wants.

She is looking for knit tights to keep her legs warm. They should be at least half cotton, although acrylic (like the yarn in knee socks) might be okay too (but no cabling, please!). Anything with a lot of spandex is out; ditto microfiber, which she doesn’t like the feel of. They must be beige (not flesh-colored). To complicate matters, she’s only about 4’11", and weighs about 125 lbs., so she’s a little short for most women’s small pantyhose sizes and too heavy to make use of girls’ sizes.

I’ve found some tights online that are intended for ice skaters, but I’m not sure this is the best way to go. I was just wondering if anyone here has some experience buying heavy-weight tights, and has any recommendations about manufacturers or yarn blends that might do the trick.

Two places I can think of off the top of my head:

The Vermont Country Store

and

Hanna Andersson

Also try ballet supply stores, or dance studio stores. They often have a large selection, and lots of catalogs. I bet they might give good advice.

DISCLAIMER:

I don’t know anything about these stores. I went to google.com and searched for warm cotton tights (no quotes). Here are some possibilities:

Go down to the bottm where it has “tights for mom.” The color listed is navy, but if you click on the arrow the pull down menu also lists ecru. This is off white. You’d have to find out if that’s close enough to beige.

This site says “great for maternity” so there’s a hint for you - try looking for tights for pregnant women.

–These are 98% cotton, 2% lycra

–These are wool (she probably wouldn’t like wool, would she? I only put them in because the sizing page made it look like they might have a good fit for her.)

Thanks, ladies. I had actually been to the Vermont Country store and Tights-on-Line before; the tights there look great, and the sizes are promising, but the color would be the hang-up. Grandma, nearly 91, is fixated on a darker shade of beige than ecru (must match her favorite skirts!), and anything else would be summarily rejected. ::sigh::

I’ve dug up the names of some hosiery shops around here - I was hoping to avoid having to make the rounds, but maybe I’ll have better luck this way.
