So is Lady Gaga- she posted this on her Twitter the other day.
And of course she’s wearing makeup in the up close shots- she’s in a music video for God’s sake. But it’s more natural makeup, clearly intended to come off as more vulnerable and less fierce than her regular makeup.
I’m going to be this person then: you don’t get it. Seriously.
I quite genuinely believe Gaga is pulling a Warhol on us all. She is everything a pop singer should be- blonde, naked, singing about sex, blah blah. But the reality is that she then does UGLY things while performing.
When I saw her concert, she came out in a flesh colored leotard. . .covered in dinosaur bones. She commits suicide on stage. All her dance moves are ugly claws and shit that looks like she’s seizing. She dresses like a giant crow on stage. I mean, I suppose you have to be there, but she most definitely does not put on your typical, fluffy, pretty pop show.
I believe she’s basically saying: look at how ridiculous I can be and you’ll still buy my shit because I’m blonde and naked. A social commentary, if you will.
And before anyone comes in and says I’m giving her too much credit- she’s a smart woman and I have no doubt that this is all just one big act for the sake of art.
Oh, further evidence for me is that her Haus of Gaga (the folks that design her clothes, sets, stage shows, etc.) is directly modeled after The Factory.
In those shots, she looks like Marilyn Monroe from the famous beach photos. I have to think that this is intentional - there wasn’t a second of that video that wasn’t carefully crafted (and I loved it - what a visual feast!).
I have immense respect for Lady Gaga as a performance artist, too. Her songs are okay (I seriously love “Poker Face” but nothing else has struck me like that), but she is above all else INTERESTING.
Uh, obviously you’re totally wrong, because she sings pop music. And is blonde and stuff. You’re giving her too much credit because of these things. Trust me. I don’t actually need to spend 5 minutes reading an interview with her where she has darn good points and explains what sociological concepts she’s intentionally exploring.
Nope. She’s obviously just a pop tart who sells sex. Because I said so.
Personally, I think The Fame Monster (part 2 to The Fame) is way better than her first CD in every way. Check it out if you can. It’s only 8 tracks, but they are all great.
My favorites right now are of course Bad Romance, Monster, Speechless (which she wrote when her dad refused to get heart surgery he needed to live), So Happy I could Die, and Teeth.
But my absolute favorite at the moment is Dance in the Dark, which is about a girl who only wants to have sex with the lights off because her boyfriend is so critical of her body.
Ok, that’s almost the entire CD. Oops. Anyway, give it a listen if you’ve got sometime.
