Lady Gaga "Bad Romance" video

I know that the board here is more or less split on Lady Gaga, but I figured it’d be interesting to see the Dope’s take on Lady Gaga’s latest video, Bad Romance.

The theme of the video is human trafficking, as she’s trafficked into sex slavery in a Russian bath house (that’s the official video description, not mine).

For me, I’m happy to see a pop star actually trying. Sure, she’s not the world’s best singer (neither is Dylan) nor is she the world’s best dancer (neither is. . . well, a whole list of great artists), but Gaga definitely brings the performance/ the art/ whatever you want to call it. The intermix of high fashion and music really comes together here in her own performance art sort of way.

I’d say this is one of the best music videos I’ve seen in a great while. Visually, the director did an awesome job, as did the set and costume designers.

Oh, I like the song, too.

I agree the video is very impressive and the song is quite catching. I can’t remember the last time a mainstream music video had such a creepy atmosphere. The body horror scenes were subtle and well made.

I didn’t like the last “joke” scene with her lying on the scorched bed with sparks flying from her tits. Undercuts the human trafficking theme. What’s wrong with leaving the audience a little bit disturbed?

I can’t help but love Lady GaGa. I seriously have loved everything she’s come out with, with the exception of ‘Just Dance’.

I LOVE her makeup in that red outfit. LOVE it.

I’d say it’s pretty disturbing that she burned her first client alive.

She’s actually quite talented, much more than most of the pop stars out there today. She has a hand in writing her own music (a quality that I’ve mentioned in previous threads that I highly respect) and she has genuine musical talent. By that I mean she can play the piano and seems to be using her natural voice to a good extent (here’s a videoof her performing live). I also enjoy her performance-artist aspect.

Oh, you wont hear any arguments about that from me- I love her. I was just heading off a few of the arguments that filled the last thread.

My only complaint? That bitch’s concert sold out in ONE MINUTE and I couldn’t get tickets. For that, she can suck it.

I didn’t really enjoy it.
Didn’t like the music (but I’m usually the market I suppose for this pop sorta stuff); doubt I’d get the the whole sex trade issue from just the lyrics alone just reading them- so basically it’s a Video that’s trying to save the song for me.
The designs however silly they were were quite well done. Lots of product placement (those Headphonesjust stuck out at me. And really? The Sex Traders use their Wii’s to buy people? (-_-)

 I think when the video was trying to hard to be Kubrick-y. It hit it on some parts, but others just went flat out silly The end scene, really? The bones didn’t burn away? And sparking tits? Made me wonder if she’s really trying to push the message of the problems w/ the Sex Trade industry, or if she’s using the controversy of the Sex Trade industry to push her own song further…
I wouldn’t watch it again.

The actual SONG isn’t about the sex trade- it’s clearly just about a bad relationship. They made the video to be about the sex trade.

The product placements were weird. I wouldn’t want my products to be associated with human trafficking. I was especially confused by the placement of Nemiroff vodka, only the villains of the story were drinking it.

Well, they’re certainly thinking with them while “shopping”.

I didn’t like it in the slightest. She can sing, but her costuming is silly and the vid’s just pretentious.
What’s with the trend for fetish costuming in vids recently, anyway (noticed this with some of Beyonce’s stuff too - are the directors all trying to be LaChapelle or something?)

What’s with her dancers? In the beginning scenes with the girls dancing in the white vinyl costumes with the spiky head pieces, the dancer in the front right looks positively chunky!

Now, being an even bigger girl myself this doesn’t offend me, I just found it amazingly out of place as that is not something you see every day on the MTV.

I didn’t see this girl in any of the other group dancing parts of the vid, so maybe it was just a bad costume or a bad angle.

Did anyone else notice that, tho?

Supposedly, it’s gossip blogger Perez Hilton.

…I wouldn’t be surprised. Gaga’s whole bit is a ‘joke’ on pop music and art.

The dancing bits are the best part of her videos since they can be counted on to be ridiculous and awkward… but they are supposed to be so it works for me.

Catchy song. I think she actually looks pretty in some parts of this video. I never thought she looked remotely pretty before…

Someone on another thread point out her whole persona is a great act. She could probably go to the grocery store or mall and no one would recognize her…

Especially if she wore a brown wig. It’s kind of amazing just how different she looked with brown hair. A brown wig and a sweatshirt, no one would look twice at her.

I agree with this, but I wasn’t sharp enough to pick it up right away. The first song / video I was exposed to was “Just Dance”. I liked the song immediately as it reminded me of '80s music but I couldn’t figure out who the unattractive Eurotrash woman was and why she had such a sleazy, low-budget looking video. It was some time before I realized it was carefully crafted and in fact came off exactly as intended.

Heh, am I the only one who thought “100 quatloos on the Blonde”?

The dancing could have done without the cat-clawing gestures IMO.

This video has convinced me that she is well aware of the “controversy” about her genitals, and she is playing it up.

Will be interesting to see what happens in the long run.

As per the OP, I liked it. A bit silly, and a bit over the top, but that’s what I expect from the Lady.

I love all her videos. Much better than anything else that is out there.

I don’t really like pop music, but I do appreciate good music videos.

That was Thriller-wannabe part.
