Scientists have just published a description of a new species of tapir in Brazil, theKobomani tapir.
The first specimen was collected over 100 years ago by Theodore Roosevelt, but was assumed to be a variant of the widespread Brazilian tapir. Indigenous hunters, however, recognized it as being a separate species.
It’s the first member of its order (Perissodactyla, which includes horses, rhinos, and tapirs) described in more than 100 years.
I love hearing stuff like this; last year it was the lesula that was the big news, this year it’s the Kobomani tapir, which I suggest we all refer to as “a kobo” or “kobos” from now on.
