Largest new mammal species in decades discovered in Brazil

Scientists have just published a description of a new species of tapir in Brazil, theKobomani tapir.

The first specimen was collected over 100 years ago by Theodore Roosevelt, but was assumed to be a variant of the widespread Brazilian tapir. Indigenous hunters, however, recognized it as being a separate species.

It’s the first member of its order (Perissodactyla, which includes horses, rhinos, and tapirs) described in more than 100 years.

Indigenous hunters enjoying Taper burgers may be why this guy is so hard to find.

Most of the skulls used to describe the species were actually obtained from hunters.

It does seem to be fairly common and widespread. Tapirs in general are very wary and hard to see.

Science totally fucking rocks!

I love hearing stuff like this; last year it was the lesula that was the big news, this year it’s the Kobomani tapir, which I suggest we all refer to as “a kobo” or “kobos” from now on.
