Larry Wilmore Nightly Show - Cancelled

I just heard on the news that Comedy Central said they cancelled the show because it hasn’t resonated with an audience, especially online.

Wilmore was the best thing on the show. If it had been him doing the entire 30 minutes, I’d have tuned in more often. Never liked the skits, and the panel discussions were very hit or miss.

Is Samantha Bee looking around furtively?

I’ve noticed you say this a few times. Seth does at most a minute and 30 seconds of “political satire” per show. Most of the time it is a completely standard entertainment focused talk showm

He almost always follows the short monolog with A Closer Look, which is at least five minutes on a topic. And these days the topic is almost always Trump. So he’s doing a beginning segment that is about the same length as the first block on TDS or Wilmore.

If you mean that she wants to go back to Comedy Central or that she thought she deserved a show on CC, what I understand is she went to TBS as part of a deal that included her husband, Jason Jones, getting his own ongoing show, The Detour, so no, I don’t think she’s even giving CC a second thought.

I guess that “closer look” segment is longer than I thought. You ain’t kidding about mostly Trump though. The one I just watched titled “dnc - day 2” was about half Trump. I wonder how much he’s going to keep it up after elections.

Sometimes Wilmore’s opening was good - but often the jokes were the same as we heard a half hour before.
Best segment was Mike Yard’s conspiracy thing, which was very well written - and really funny. The fake Trump was good also. But a lot of the bits have become repetitious.
And I agree with everyone about the panel. The first version, with several guests, was a real mess, but even this version gives a guest the opportunity to clam up and have the regulars take over. And none of them are especially enlightening. Forcing a guest to talk about the issue of the day is not as good as listening to the guest talk about something the guest knows about.
I watched it all the time, but I can see why a lot of people tuned out. @Midnight is a lot funnier. TDS is also, and the format is a lot better, though Trevor has a ways to go yet.

I found the fake Trump bit to be incredibly unfunny - I may have slightly chuckled the first time, but its returns diminished long, long ago.

The whole show didn’t quite work. The monologues were about half and half. The sketches were much more miss than hit. And the panel … the panel seemed like a good interesting idea. But more often than not, it was 3 or 4 people who didn’t understand the issue of the night well enough to say anything worth saying. There’d be a few cheap jokes. Someone (or a few people) would say something that was mostly irrelevant or missed the entire point and because either the other panelists didn’t know the subject (or they were told not to say anything), the stupid comment would slide.

I never liked “keeping it 100”

I may not have been the target demographic for this show.

Too bad. I don’t watch it that often, but when I do, I generally like it.

And I can’t stand that @midnight show that will take its slot.

I feel sorry for the people of Flint!

I’m super bummed. I didn’t like every episode or every segment or every contributor, but the stuff that was done well was phenomenal. I can see why it was canceled because it wasn’t consistent (I agree with most of the previous posters that Velez was the weakest one) but it was important. I like hearing other sides of issues that I don’t necessarily get exposed to as a middle aged suburban introverted white person. I loved that the women were intelligent and fierce and funny and not just token additions. Larry himself is fantastic.

Wilmore’s opening segment was usually pretty good. Him in a format closer to the old Colbert Show would have been more enjoyable for me. The skits I found hit or miss. Grace Parras in the Nightly Nightly but would occasionally be good, but not often. Rory, Holly, and Robin were usually really good, but had occasional misses.

Good Riddance to disgusting horrible show. There may be a god after all

Cosby? Is that you?

I’ll definitely miss this one. I’ve watched every episode.

A lot is always said about it being a show that focuses on race issues but it’s also always been by far one of the best topical comedy shows for women’s issues. Holly Walker, Robin Thede, Franchesca Ramsey, and Grace Parra are all great and I’d love to see them continue to work together. Apparently Franchesca Ramsey’s MTV show is still secure- I’ve never seen it, but at least she’s not out of work.

Whether they were seriously addressing women’s issues, like sales tax on tampons, or just going over the top about something silly but from a female perspective- When the Bundy group took over the Federal bird sanctuary building and people kept sending them dildos, Holly, Robin, and Grace took over a U.S. Post Office hoping people would send them dildos as well. Possibly the funniest thing ever on the show and probably the funniest take on that whole topic from any comedy show. I seriously almost went out to buy dildos to send to the Nightly Show for Holly, Robin, and Grace.

P.S. I also love Jordon Carlos doing Dennis Rodman.

Regarding Ricky Velez: Not at all my favorite but, generally speaking, the other contributors tend to agree with one another during panel discussions. When Ricky is on the panel he often takes a position that the others don’t accept and they have something to actually argue against. So, I think he served a purpose fairly well. He’d have served that purpose even better if his contrary positions had actual substance but, still, it added something do have someone pushing against the prevailing narrative of the panel.

Echoing the above, I loved the opening block. fast forwarded past the skit… and sometimes enjoyed the discussion. Never could understand why they would invite guests who were so incoherent - sometimes, not all of the time. Honestly, I think it’s probably fair to say that talk shows are not the natural environment for most of the featured musicians. Knowing this, why persist?

In any case, I will miss the opening blocks.

:dubious:

I agree. I really liked Wilmore, but I stopped watching the panel pretty quickly. Wasn’t there a panel with an anti-vaxer whose opinion was treated as equal to everyone else’s or am I thinking of another show? I could have kept watching and just turned it off before the panel if it wasn’t for the skits. Although I had stopped watching the show, it is disappointing that it was cancelled. There were a lot of talented people on the show, hopefully they all go on to find good work.

I’m curious what Comedy Central will put in it’s timeslot, if it will be another news or political show, or something completely different, or just reruns of South Park and Tosh.0.

I think Sam Bee is feeling comfortable. Her ratings are good enough that TBS extended the number of episodes on order. And I’ve definitely seen more clips of her show shared online compared to the Nightly Show. Both her and John Oliver are helped by being on just once a week, with the shorter time to fill they can keep the quality higher and have less need for filler.

All of the things I was going to say.

It’s a shame, though. I’m sure everybody (except for hopefully Ricky Velez, ugh) will end on their feet, but on other shows most of them will be the one person of color instead of part of a wide range of experience on the Nightly Show. It really offered something you can’t see anywhere else these days and I will miss it fiercely.

(But whoever said they liked those Nightly Nightly! bits, oh my god what is wrong with you?! That was the worst thing about the show, that they’d drive the same joke into the ground not just once but every other show.)

Can’t say I’m too surprised, or all that disappointed. Wilmore was always a bit too sour/dyspeptic for my liking.
