Larry Wilmore Nightly Show - Cancelled

I think this last week may be real interesting. I think by Thursday the gloves are going to be off, and we’ll hear some real “keeping it 100” stuff.

Last joke - Trump or Cosby?

Maybe Obama will drop in and, uh, familiarly commend him on his performance.

I enjoyed The front of the show a lot, but I couldn’t take the panel of the extremely uninformed.

@Midnight is only taking the slot until they come up with a replacement, just like the period after Colbert left and before TNS started.
@Midnight was getting better ratings, which is sad. I do like it, but it is fluff.

Yeah, but it’s truly funny fluff.

I’ll miss Soul Daddy. And Cosby, he hasn’t forgotten about you MF!

Fo some reason I felt that Soul Daddy was really the most solid part of the show and and Larry - who was good as newsman - was even better as a character. Seemed like the writing and acting was most tight, and most funny, when Soul Daddy was on.

Now I’m wondering how Larry would do at 11:30pm on Sunday nights on HBO, with a bit of an overhaul. That could be a decent pairing.

I can’t say I’m surprised. In my experience, The Nightly Show had a tendency to get preachy and unapologetically take sides on issues, sometimes even to the point of dismissing the other side too cavalierly. I can imagine that rubbed many people the wrong way. As much as some people disliked Jon Stewart’s “I’m just a comedian” defense, it was IMO better to take potshots and retreat (and hopefully point out who should have been taking a stand) than to actually have an explicit position of their own.

I think he could do great stuff with an HBO show. But he was producer or something on Blackish before the Nightly Show started, I’m guessing he might go back to that, or start up another new show as a producer. While there was some great stuff on the Nightly Show, Blackish is seen by a lot more people and can get more people talking and can talk about things in a less direct way.

Do you have any examples? I haven’t watched the show in a while, and I can understand getting a preachy tone can be a turnoff, but there are some issues where sides should be taken and one side is just right.

They must have had a hell of a farewell party yesterday, since TNS and TDS both pretty much phoned it in. Two interviews? Replaying old and not that great bits?

And TDS was horribly edited too. Scenes that were choppy and obviously cut and I don’t recall them saying the fuller version was on the net.

I caught the end of the TDS rerun on Comedy Central this morning. Right after, they showed a Saturday Night Live rerun, starting with a skit about cancelled late night talk shows.

Well played.

Never watched a single ep. I don’t watch any late night types, but I catch youtubes other people post. He never shows up. No one posts him. A couple times I’ve been reminded his show is a thing and looked it up and found that he’s boring as boiled kleenex.

I don’t think the internet lies about these things. If he was worth watching, I’d be seeing links to him. The couple times I have watched a clip, it was a snoozer and/or very amatuer. If he has a message he’s failed to deliver it kinda like that local vegan kale salad place failed.

He’s also a producer on the upcoming HBO sitcom Insecure, which is why I was thinking of HBO.

Like several others, I liked the opening and didn’t like the panel. Four people in a panel on the last segment of a 30 minute show was usually a disaster. Everyone trying to get their jokes in before time ran out, Wilmore not really being suited to herd those cats.
