Last night I saw Rufus Wainwright

In Newcastle - UK

I travelled 80 miles to see him (and 80 miles back). He metaphorically blew my tube socks off. What a show.

As a UK fan where Rufus has been on a media blitz of which I slightly disapprove; how is the US reception?

Any backlash on his ‘papal’ pronouncements?

Any interest at all?

New Rufus fan from his hometown of Montreal. I wasn’t in to him yet last time he was here, so I don’t know what the concert was like.

And I didn’t hear about the “papal comment”…?

I’m a fairly recent fan of Rufus. I loved Want One and couldn’t wait until Want Two
came out. The DVD with it has live footage of him. He must put on a helluva show.

We kept hearing that he was touring with Ben Folds, but we never saw any news of So. Calif. shows. Rufus may have played a spur of the moment show in a smaller venue, but we are 2 hours from LA and need a bit more notic. If I knew when and where he was performing, I would definitely drive 2 hours each way to see him.

In introducing ‘Gay Messiah’ he has noted the vacancy at the vatican as a portent for the impending Gay Messiah. Only ruder.

It was a fantastic show. 6 piece band, 7 part harmonies, 2 hours plus; here’s the set; -
Agnus Dei
Crumb by crumb
Peach Trees
Hometown Waltz
Vibrate
Grey Gardens
The Art Teacher
This Love Affair
The One you Love
Gay Messiah
Want
Beautiful Child
Memphis Skyline
Hallelujah
Across The Univers
Beauty Mark
Little sister
Dinner At Eight
Waiting for a Dream
Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk
14th Street

Old Whores Diet
Oh What a World
Pretty Things
I Don’t Know what it is

Here’s the band

Joan Wasser (vocals/violin/guitar)
Jenifer Stills (vocals)

I hadn’t heard anything about his papal comment.

I would say he’s not terribly well-known here in the States except to a small specialized audience. I think a lot of people know who he is from his contribution to the I Am Sam soundtrack.

I’m a fan of his dad’s (Loudon Wainwright III), and also, to a somewhat lesser degree, his mom and his aunt (Kate & Anna McGarrigle) because of my general interest in folk music, but I’ve never really gotten into Rufus’s music - I find his voice kind of whiney and annoying.

(I do find it funny, though, that when he was a baby, his father put out an album titled “Rufus Is A Tit Man” - guess he wasn’t expecting his son to be gay, huh?)

Well, his father made up for it by writing “One-Man Guy” for him

I saw him in Ventura, CA a year or so ago. I really enjoyed it. Sorry, it’s early and I have nothing else to add.
