Now, I’m certainly not a huge fan of this show. In fact, I think it mostly sucks. I do watch it half-assededly because it fills the half hour after “The Daily Show” and I often pay little attention, clean the kitchen, wrestle the kid to bed and basicly use it as background, BUT…
Last night, they had Scott Thompson, Dom (the Italian guy) and Nick DiPaulo on. Nick made the mistake of taking a jab at Scott, making a poor “gay” joke. Scott fires back and shuts him down. A little later, Scott says something about Nick being an Icon in the gay community and
the look on Nick’s face, one of panic, terror, confusion and uncomfort was the funniest thing I have ever seen on this show!!
Anybody else catch that classic moment? You could almost hear Nick clenching his ass-cheeks! Hilarious!
Another thought about this show: Who writes Colins material, and why don’t they let him read the jokes before taping? The way Quinn muddles through the que-cards, you would swear it was the first time he had seen the material.
I loved that Scott completely called Nick’s bluff on Nick’s asinine (emphasis on the “ass” syllable) comment about Scott being used to talking with something in his mouth. Completely beat him at his own game. It rocked. I didn’t watch the whole show (I can only take so much Colin Quinn), but that was defnitely worthwhile.
The only redeeming moments in “Tough Crowd” are those that don’t involve Colin Quinn.
I caught a bit of a show awhile back where Denis Leary was on. Denis insulted one of the regular couch guys; Regular Couch Guy slammed it back in Leary’s face; Leary tried a return insult, which RCG again slammed back in his face. After one more go-around, Leary finally quit after Quinn intervened.
It was funny because Leary clearly couldn’t handle being bested. He got progressively angrier, and his retorts got progressively lamer. Meanwhile, RCG stayed cool as a cucumber. Leary was visibly upset after the exchange.
Leary’s pretty good at insulting people who can’t manage a snappy comeback, but apparently he can’t handle an opponent who can fight back. I enjoyed seeing him taken down a peg.
I keep trying to watch this show, because Quinn is mysteriously able to secure good guests (he had George Carlin on a while back, which I thought was interesting, given how little regular talk-show type stuff Carlin usually does), but I just can’t. It’s a bargain-basement Politically Incorrect, and I didn’t like that show much either.
I saw the first couple minutes of last night’s show, after Stewart and before switching over to Letterman, and I knew Scott would be funny, but I didn’t think it would be worth trying to put up with the rest of the show so I didn’t stick around.
I heard the “gay icon” comment but didn’t see “the look” because I tend to listen to the show more than watch it, since I also use that time to usually eat dinner, do a few chores, get ready for work, etc. I had missed the first few minutes of the show so didn’t see the build up to it, I’ll have to look for it during the replay at 6:30pm.
I hate myself for falling in the habit of watching it, but it has become semi-regular viewing for me, even though I roll my eyes more than laugh at it. The slams, digs, and personal insults at each other are better than any of their attempts at humor based on the “issues”. Those skits are even worse, tired jokes based on stereotypes and lazy intensional line flubbing. It’s like a Don Rickles Fantasy Camp.
Carlin may have been on there, but he also provided more evidence that he has gone from off-kilter “comic genius” to cranky old man riding on his past rep.
gatopescado, the bad thing about Quinn and the cue cards is that that has always been his “delivery”. Do you remember when he hosted “Weekend Update” on SNL, he had time to rehearse and practice at least most of the material then and he would still stumble over his words.
A clue as to why Collin gets good guests has been dropped repeatedly on the show. Quinn gets his old coke buddies on the show a lot.
Leary himself once said that if Hitler had coke there would be Jews hanging around with him in the bathroom doing lines and blaming Himmler. Not that Quinn is Hitler, and I like his show as it allows comics to say things they would not normally say in a format designed for such an exchange.
I tried to like that show. I really did, but it was a no go. Besides Sarah Silverman, who is hot, but not that hot, there was little to keep me from changing channels.
What I found interesting about the episode with Carlin is that they seemed to change the entire format for that one show. Colin would bring up a topic, one comic would make a quick joke (obviously pre-arrainged) then they moved on to another topic. No discussion, no personal attacks.
The end of the priest skit was kind of humorous. I wasn’t sure if Carlin was acting or not! He seemed genuinly pissed!
As bad as this show is, it is positivly brilliant compared to “Reno 911”.
The show is slightly better when the completely one-note Patrice “White people suck” O’Neal is not on. If they’re not talking about something that he can stick race into, he is completely lost. When they were talking about pedophile priests (for about the zillionth time), the jokes actually stopped as they tried to explain the concept of “the Pope being head of the Catholic Church” to him when he was asking if there was someone in charge of the Catholics who should do something about it. At first I thought he was setting them up, playing dumb but he seemed genuinely confused. ::rolleyes::
But even he is better than the guy I saw on once: Ricky something - skinny, veiny guy with short dark hair and a goatee, The guy twitched, scratched, and shook so much and said so little that made sense, I was convinced he was a heroin junkie jonesing for a fix and suffering from “cotton fever” as well.
I’m thinking of starting a drinking game based on how many times Colin tells Jim Norton, “Shut up, stupid!” Kind of a 21st century “Hi Bob!”
Damn, I love Scott Thompson. It was cinched when I heard his “dreamcatcher” line when he was promoting his one-man show on Conan. I gotta look up the guests beforehand so I know to watch or not.
George and Colin are doing some lame skit as priests and Jim Norton busts in as an alter boy carrying one of Carlin’s old LPs and hands it to him for an autograph, which wasn’t part of the joke, by the way. Carlin seems to get pissed and lets loose a string of the “7 dirty words” and gets up and storms off. I can’t recall exactly what he said, but he seemed genuinly pissed. I think he may have said something about “unprofessionilism” or something. I assumed that he was pissed someone would “extort” an autograph from him in mid-gag. (Of course, this is assuming that the whole thing wasn’t just a gag. I like to dream up wild shit like this. It makes my dull evenings more entertaining!)
