Why am I so obsessed with Colin Quinn?!

For some reason, over the summer, I became utterly obsessed with Colin Quinn. Host of Weekend Update, star of his own TV show…Yes, around that time, I did read the threads stating that he was unfunny/untalented. But I became obsessed all the same, watching later episodes of SNL just for him, seeing him at the Comedy Central roast, watching Tough Crowd all the time…taping an episode of The Cosby Show to see his 5 second cameo…

And then I go off to college. Which is good–no TV, should be in the library studying…so no time for an obsession not of the Calvin Klein variety. Of course, I go to school in the city. (Yeah, you know which one.) I’ve been back for about a week and a half, and I’ve already seen him perform stand up at the Comedy Cellar three times. I’ve nearly got his entire routine memorized. And “Tough Crowd” is taped only a short subway ride away.

I know, it’s kind of a random obsession. And that a lot of people hate him. It would be cool if someone could offer a neat psychological analysis that was short and succint and convenient, and explained it all.

But in my defense…his show has opened up a world of new comedians to me. And he is actually really funny live…way way WAY funnier than one might think from watching him on Weekend Update. More natural, more amusing.

So…please, tell me I’m not insane for obsessing over him. And please excuse the numerous times I use the word obsess…it’s just too late.

I’d like to, unfortunately I can’t stand the unfunny bastard.

You go ahead and obsess all you want though, just so long as you don’t come near me. I no wanna no Colin Quinn lover’s cooties!

I’m with Fibber. My interest in Colin Quinn, when it exists, is mostly of the “watching a flaming car crash” variety.

Eh, Colin Quinn’s not as bad as all that. I don’t have cable, so unfortunately I can’t comment on his Comedy Central show, but back when he was on rabbit-ear accesible TV, I thought his stuff was kinda hilarious.

Colin Quinn has the worst monologues and skits on television. He’s a terrible host who couldn’t tell a joke properly to even the most forgiving audience. However, I LOVE his show. Nothing on TV makes me laugh so hard, and its because of his guests. Some of the arguments and interactions between them are the achingly hilarious, especially when Nick DiPaulo is on.

I used to like him on SNL but on this Comedy Central show, his delivery is just horrible. Stupefyingly so.

Don’t feel bad…it’s like a grisley car wreck.

You just HAVE to look…

I also love Colin Quinn. Tough Crowd is a great show. I too have discovered a bunch of great comedians from that show. Specifically Greg Giraldo (I think that is his last name) and Nick Dipalo. I always thought he was the worst Weekend Update host ever, but that may have been because he replaced Norm MacDonald, who was the best ever. Last summer I think, he had a show on NBC for a month or two that was part Tough Crowd, part SNL. I thought it was great. I think it only lasted 4 episodes and was called The Colin Quinn Show. That is when I did a 180 on my opinion of him. I have never seen him live, but I will catch him the first chance I get.

Anyone know where in New York they tape Tough Crowd? I would love to go see it.

There is only one reason to watch Tough crowd and that reason is Jim Norton!

Not a huge fan, but Quinn is much better when he is off the script. He can be very funny in interviews and I would imagine quite good in the clubs.

Ah, a fellow fan. slu, the show is taped on West 53rd between 9th and 10th Avenue. As soon as I can get it into my schedule, I’m going. (Why…WHY did I think six o clock classes were a good idea?!)

I didn’t think he was too killer as a Weekend Update host either. But then, I don’t love Norm McDonald either. Or Kevin Nealon. Actually, as a rule, I never really dug Weekend Update.

He is very good in the clubs, Murcielago. He gets really good laughs for the most part. (NOT JUST FROM ME!) Although it does take a few minutes for him to get warmed up, I will admit.

Because you have incredibly lousy taste and a really sick fetish?

Is it an obsession of hate? I can join you in that!

If you ask me nicely, Zoggie, I can tell you which restaurant I went to where he sat in the next booth.
