Any idea if there were any ‘conversions’? I.e., can it be tracked if a visitor to a thread decides to register?
I promote the SDMB a lot on Twitter… know I’ve gotten Harry Turtledove, Mark Cuban, Chris Sacca, and Mitch Kosterman to browse the site over the past year or so… but am kinda interested in knowing if this has any measurable impact.
Do you have your analytics page set up? You can track your history at analytics.twitter.com, which gives month-to-month summaries and details of your posting history.
It’s a good number–but, of course, it’s hard to tell what someone does after they click on something. Some people will click anything but read nothing.
Twitter allows for up to four pictures per tweet - screenshot the comment you wish to highlight and add it to the tweet.
1.a. If multiple images, it helps to make sure that the bottom line or two of image 1 is displayed on the top of image 2 (and so on). This helps readers track the comment better.
Do #1 BEFORE you add the link to the SDMB page.
The question of ‘do I link to the thread or the post?’ depends on what you’re promoting. IF YOU ARE THE OP, go ahead and link to the thread. Otherwise, you’ll likely have to link to the post.
3.a. To the point above, when I link to the thread, I typically make a comment like "there’s a more nuanced, longer form discussion of this topic at boards.straightdope.com/… "
Clout chase. ‘Clout chasing’ means responding quickly to very popular accounts. The above tweet was a response to a pretty popular (only has 11.5k followers, but his followers ‘clout’ is rather high) account. The original tweet got 9k likes, mine got 500. But had I posted the exact same tweet just as a original tweet on my account, it may have gotten… at best… 20 likes from my 1k followers.
Guys and gals, social media is, at its heart, media. The SDMB needs to be promoted, widely, on these massive networks if it is to survive, and we have… despite the board issues… a very engaging base and high-quality discussions on thousands of topics. If we could, maybe, once a week get on our FB or Twitter accounts and say “hey, we’re discussing this at the SDMB and there are nuances in this topic which can’t be covered in a single FB post… here’s a link”… that will do more, far more, for this Boards long term viability than, say, increasing the monetization of the current members. (Which also needs to be done, but that’s not what this thread is about.)
