Latest stupid commercial thread

I’ve been seeing this commercial lately for the new BMW 3 Series Diesel, and I have no idea what’s going on in it.

Why is the father looking uncomfortable? Because his daughter is dating (married to?) a white dude? What is he afraid the young man is going to say to him? “We’re getting married?” “We’re having a baby?” “I bought a Hummer?” Is there some context here that I’m missing?

But but but … the boyfriend is Asian, too. Isn’t he?

No.

I like the car, though.

Okay, um, I’m really not sure what the “prank” is in this Shock Top beer commercial:

Yeah, I don’t see any kind of prank. It’s basically just two guys working the crowd to promote the beer. It is annoying, though.

[serious voiceover]We secretly replaced these customers premium Shock Top display booth employees with freestyle rappers. Let’s see if anyone notices. [/serious voiceover]
OMG, that is so a funny prank, replacing the normal Shock Top employees with freestyle rappers from UCB. OMG, I’m just dying laughing. Nobody expects freestyle rapping!

Okay, wtf is UCB?

I hate this little bitch. Give her 20 bucks and tell if she’s trying to extort you, she can suck it.

Not sure if this belongs here, but the latest iPhone commercial shows a bunch of diverse people using their iPhones to help them create music and video in various ways. As per usual with Apple ads, it’s pretty well done. I was curious about the song that features prominently in the ad and I looked it up. It’s “Gigantic” by the Pixies. According to all the cool kids on the internet, the lyrics are about a big black cock.

Am I the only one who gets stabby when the McDonald’s “Random Red Couch” commercial comes on?

The Red Couch commercial just seems… pointless. I guess it showcases the value menu items but the “red couch” part eludes me. Is it supposed to be random that the red couch exists or do you get random items for sitting on it or what? Ah, who cares.

The AT&T (?) commercial with a couple tech guys working in an office ceiling and a mousy office worker asks what they’re doing. Then one of the AT&T guys starts flirting with her. There really doesn’t seem to be much more to the commercial than that so my take-away feels like “Call AT&T and we’ll come over and hit on your employees”.

I actually don’t mind that one. “Gigantic” is one of my favorite Pixies songs.

It’s a couple of years old now, but I still laugh at the Double Penetration Drano commercial

Then she’ll tell you THAT is sixty bucks.

The iPhone commercial where people are using their iphones as random musical equipment. That’s all fine and good that the phone can actually do those things, but why would you want to? Wouldn’t you want a dedicated circuit on your electric guitar? You get all cranked up jamming out on stage, and then someone sends you a text and your sound drops out. Or your guitar suddenly starts ringing. I suppose battery life isn’t a concern, either?

Anywhere that anyone posts anything positive about that commercial, I post:

*I have no idea what kind of person is the actress, Katie Malia, who plays “Susan” in this commercial. For all I know, she’s a saint. But, if so, then she’s one hell of an actress because, make no mistake about it, the character “Susan” in this commercial is a godawful human being.

Absolutely godawful.

The pity is that so many people in our society watch that commercial and pay more attention to whether or not they, or others, think it’s cute – or that the actress is cute – and completely miss that the character is completely bereft of integrity…

…and don’t give it a second thought: they either aren’t bothered by it or, worse, think it’s okay… normal.

I, for one, cannot watch that commercial without shaking my head in disbelief at the sheer and unmitigated awfulness of the character “Susan.” But I shake my head in disbelief, even more, at the Susan Worship going on in places like this.

Where, alas, has decency gone.

Based on current Wendy’s and Sonic commercials, I have concluded that everyone who eats at fast-food burger places is repulsive.

How about the Crestor dude? Unless he invented it or profits from it, his enthusiam for the product goes way beyond creepy.

I nominate KFC, too. Also, they are every bit as annoying and dim-witted as they are repulsive. These commercials were made this way deliberately, apparently KFC knows its customers.

The one that gets me is a commercial for the Universal Studios theme park. A couple takes their teenage daughter to the park and she goes around everywhere with her face in her cellphone the entire time, ignoring her parents and everything around her. Then, as they’re sitting at a table the husband gets a text from the daughter, even though she’s sitting mere feet away from them and presumably is not mute, that says “Best vacation EVAR!!” So the husband gets all choked up, and the wife says “and you said no phones”. As if one throwaway text makes up for constantly being on the phone, oblivious and rude during the family vacation. And when the husband had made the perfectly reasonable request to put the phones away during the vacation, apparently either his wife overruled him or his daughter had a fit and he caved. Nice parenting portrayal.
