Latisse...The new drug for all you women with balding eyelashes. WTF?

Threads with medical anecdotes and advice go in IMHO, so I’ll move this thither.

I use it. And it makes my eyes look amazing. My lashes are so long they damn near wave. I’ve not noticed any side effects, either. I went to school, studied hard, got a damn good job, and if I want to spend my money on a pricey cosmetic, (which is essentially what Latisse is, and a damn good one, too), then that would be my business, not yours.

 Are you talking to someone the rest of us can’t see?

I talked to my Dr. about it, actually. I have stupidly puny lashes - they go with the rest of me - I’m quite hairless, save for a few key spots.

She had tried it herself - she’s black and said many black women have short, puny lash issues. She said it worked really, really well to the point that her lashes were hitting her glass lenses when she blinked, but she decided it wasn’t worth the cost.

So, for the time being I’m not going to bother because it is really expensive (here at least). If my lashes get even thiner I may reconsider.

She’s probably talking to you, the OP, considering you called the drug the result of a devolution of prescription medicine that’s reached ridiculous levels. Also, coyness doesn’t suit you, smilies or not.

I was on glaucoma drops for a year in my twenties. I don’t remember the name of the particular drops I was using, but I can tell you from personal experience that glaucoma drops do cause excessive eyelash growth. I don’t even wear mascara, I don’t need it, I have long and fairly full lashes on their own. I ended up with a “forest” that especially grew in the inside corners of each eye. I had to pluck them, and still have a couple small ones in each corner about 15 years later that I have to pluck regularly. Plucking eyelashes is not a good time.

I also had light hazel irises that sometimes looked gold or green. During the year on glaucoma drops, they turned plain dark brown. So it does happen for sure, just not to everyone. I miss my hazel eyes, but at least don’t really notice any more unless the subject comes up. :frowning:

I guess I was lucky in that I ended up not having to use the drops forever, and a specialist cleared me for my particular problem (optic nerve head drusen) so it’s just something to monitor and hasn’t caused any problems (yet). The forest of eyelashes was a bit of a bother for me, on top of having to put in drops every day.

I started it about a week ago so haven’t noticed anything yet but I want to add two things I was told by my prescribing dermatologist:

  1. You get a tiny bottle and 60 little paint brushes, a 30 day supply. I was specifically told that there is enough product for almost twice that long but you just have to use the same brush on both eyes (and then throw it away, don’t reuse!). According to him, the company doesn’t advocate this because they don’t want people spreading infections between eyes or contaminating the product. (And also Step 3: Profit!) I got a wink and a nod, if you will, and directions to cease and desist if I get pink eye or something.

  2. I asked about the eye color thing, because I’ve got blue eyes and he told me I had nothing to worry about. He said it may make brown pigment darker and because I don’t have brown pigment, I don’t have to worry. FWIW. The guy knows his stuff in other respects so I trust him.

Oh and, he made me get a note from my eye doctor before he’d give me a prescription. IANAMD, I am just relaying what I was told. Talk to your own, don’t blame me for errors, blah, blah, blah.

It was probably bimatoprost, aka Lumigan - aka Latisse. That’s the only one I’ve heard of having the long lashes side effect, but then again, glaucoma isn’t really my specialty area.

But as to her commenting on it being “her business, not mine”, what about my OP gave any sort of impression that I gave one-little-turd about what one individual to the next wishes to do with their own money? I say, you want them lashes baby, have at it. I made no judgment of anybody making use of this product. I judged the product itself. wtf

Are you back on the Zoloft yet?

:dubious:

I’m on xalatan (latanoprost) myself and it has the same side effect. It can be a little odd as I probably don’t apply it for the best lash results. What happens (with me, anyway) is that my lower lashes at the midline tend to be longer than at the edges. It’s kind of Raggedy Ann-esque.

Think of it this way: some people with sparse eyelashes feel as bad as you do when you have to get wheeled to the bathroom on an airplane. Irrational? Yes, but there’s no changing it.

I feel this was an inappropriate comment.

I am asking this question because I don’t understand why someone would use this product. I am making no personal judgment here.

It was answered. Because some woman have thin eyelashes and care about this sort of thing.

I know, I was pointing it out as a question because I was being accused of judging the people who choose to use the product.

Sorry you feel that way. But look at how many people found your reaction to be utterly bizarre. And think of how strange you think wanting thicker eyelashes to be. In the greater scheme of things, being wheeled to the bathroom is a pretty tiny thing, as is being upset about not having thicker lashes. (And I say this as someone planning on getting lash extensions next week!)

And you accused her of talking to imaginary people in responding to your OP. Good job being not-judgey. So we come full circle.
