There once was an ethos that law was a gentleman’s profession in a culture of public service. Especially since billable hours it’s just another business where time and aptitude are better rewarded elsewhere.

It still is, in a lot of ways. There are plenty of BigLaw firms that put serious time and money into pro bono work. For that matter, many lawyers go straight from law school into nonprofit or government work.
The law won’t take in any scoundrel and turn him out a gentleman - if you go in a scoundrel, you’ll come out one. But the law can make a good person better, and let him do more good.
