bump

David spills the beans:

David, you are truly evil for sharing this. They can keep their nefarious color scheme, they can keep their every-post-has-its-own-emoticon-flag for those who can’t figure what the post actually said, and please, they can keep the “bumping” over there.

At least over here, we use some plausible pretext most of the time to bring a thread back up to the top.

Sue! You fforgot to say “bump”!!

Yer pal,

Phaedrus, I’m at work, getting paid for this. I think that’s definitely “evil” or at least devious!

Polycarp, that was funny. Actually, I think I found it a little funnier than most people would but hey, it’s late!

Born O.K. the first time…

If you are born again, do you have two belly-buttons?

Oh yeah, BUMP!

Yeah!

Following time-honoured (well, 11-months worth) Straight Dope Message Board tradition, shouldn’t that be:

I’m not beating a dead horse here, I promise, just sharing information. mbagnall misunderstood a post on the old “For David B” thread and came to the mistaken belief that The Atlantic had not reviewed the Left Behind series. That review exists and is now on-line.

I’m not going to go over there as a newbie and post it; that would just stir up trouble. But if any Pounders want to discuss the review over at LBBB, here’s the link:
http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2000/01/001gross.htm

Fair warning: read the review first. It’s pretty brutal.
Oh yea, I forgot.

Thanks, Manny - hadn’t been to the Atlantic site in several days. Good catch!

I wonder … will the book’s readers pressure the FAA into requiring at least one member of each airliner’s flight crew not to be a born-again?

[bump] So, let’s see. MBagnall has successfully prevented Dopers and Pounders from debating on the Sinister Posterior Message Board, so now he wants to keep them from debating on the Straight Dope Message Board?[/bump]

In fairness to mbagnall, no. The OP was on the day of all the silliness.

He has since allowed the Dopers to return, and there has been no “reprisal” against Pounders who stay.

I only re-lit this thread because it seemed like the one he’d be most likely to lurk. It was a peace offering, in the spirit of eradicating ignorance

Just wanted to thank whoever posted this URL over on the LBMB. I’ve been following “The Narrow Road” forum for a few months, but given that I’m not one of the saved elite and tend to have some (relatively) radical views, this place looks a little more interesting.

Meara

That would be me, meara.

You are quite welcome! Just please don’t go telling all the Pounders that Satan brought you here, okay? Might not go over very well…

Actually, tracer, the way I heard it, and please be informed that this was the first time I EVER heard of the Rapture, over twenty years ago, was that for that very reason, International law already required that every flight crew consist of at least one atheist.

I didn’t pursue the conversation.

kaylasdad - pardon my skepticism, but did you actually see this law in some official source, or was it just something you heard?

Sorry, Roscoe, I thought I had attempted to make it clear that the cite was anecdotal. I first heard about the concept of the Rapture in the course of this conversation with a Born-Again Christian (we didn’t call them Pounders in Southern California in those days; if a pejorative form was needed, “Jesus Freaks” or “Holy Rollers” had to serve. Personally, I thought both terms were disrespectful, and tended to steer clear of their use). The B-AC cited the “law,” and pointed to it as evidence that the Rapture prophecy MUST be true – even the government was making contingency plans to accommodate it.

As I said, I didn’t pursue the conversation.

Oh God [sic], kaylasdad99, I thought you were joking at first! :o

Oh, great. This afternoon, I registered as a member on the LBMB, and I come back here and find this thread. Does this mean I can’t hang out with you guys anymore?

Why did I register there? Satan led me to it. Yeah, it was Satan. Satan posted the URL on another thread here, and I was drawn there by his evil power. A pox on you, Satan! A pox!

In the future, I’ll have to start checking threads that are more than a day or two old before I start joining other message boards to make sure I’m not registering on one whose members are not welcome here.

Sheesh.

The trouble with Sir Launcelot is by the time he comes riding up, you’ve already married King Arthur.

Well, agisofia, of course you can stay. The original message was from mbagnell, calling back his crack quotation-toting shock troops. If you want to take the time, look back to the New Years weekend.

Baggins found out that a group from this baord had been posting over there, and coming back here to one thread to, well, snicker about some of the more brainless answers they got to legitimate question. As it happens, I think we got the better of the situation. Many thoughtful folks who might never have found this board came over and are now valued members of our community. If course, we also got Archangel anf GodlyGuy, but you can’t have everything…
