You know, I meant to ask that. How in the heck do you people read the LBBB? My eyes hurt just from looking at it, and I’d like to think it’s not some holy-water-on-Satan thing :wink: You really don’t find the black on white and gray easier to read?

Also, IMHO the LB board looks like, well, Hell! It’s all dark, with flames coming out of half the folders. Is that intentional on the authors’ part because of the pre-apocalyptic setting of the books?

Jesus saves… Gretzky grabs the rebound… He Scores!

I like the white on black because it harkens back to the great ol’ days of DOS and UNIX before all these funky Gooeys came round. :slight_smile:

Yes, this board is a little easier on the eyes. But I happen to like all our cool little smileies!

I’d like to second manhattan’s comment regarding the LB color scheme. I must admit the color scheme seemed very fires-of-hell to me, and I think it contributed to the psychological wear-and-tear of posting there, for me at least. I’m curious as to how others found it.

I got a headache a lot of the time when I read the posts over there. Light-on-dark text is much harder to read than dark-on-light, according to the comprehension and legibility studies I’ve seen. It looks cool, but it’s generally a big no-no for designers for that very reason. Imagine reading an entire book of light-on-dark text. ::shudder::

Or maybe the headache was from The POWER Of The WORD Of GOD pounding into my head!!! :wink:

Condemnant qui non intelligent

Speaking of smilies, I notice the LBMB recently got a whole new crop of much weirder smilies that show up whenever youencode a smiley backwards; i.e. : followed by ) gets you this: :slight_smile: , but ( followed by : gets you a bizarre half-green (: variant of the same.

And don’t get me started on those new smilies with the googly eyes and the spaces between their teeth…

[codger mode]DOS? You had DOS? When I was a boy, we had punch cards and greenbar paper. And we liked it! Why, I remember the first 3270 terminal we got. Boy, that was really something! And we liked it! [/codger]

Jesus saves… Gretzky grabs the rebound… He Scores!

I’m still confused on the reason for the flames coming out of the folders myself. I also wonder why it happens at 35 posts as well. What is significant about that particular number it gets flames.

manhattan, can I out-codger you? First time I saw a variant of your sig line (on the laundry room wall at college), it had Esposito instead of Gretzky. :wink:

Manny, you had punchcards?

When I was a boy…

Never mind.

A seminar on time travel will be held two weeks ago.

From the Olden Days of the AOL board, preserved on the Page O Funnies, http://fathom.org/teemingmillions/flames.html :

{{{{{{Re: “The first computer class I took in college was on punch cards. This wasn’t before the earth’s crust cooled, it was only
1979. Or maybe that was before it cooled for some of you… Anyway, it’s probably why it took me so long to sit down at a computer
again; I had nightmares about those *&^% cards.”}}}}}}

   {{{{{Oh yeah? The first programming I learned, we saved our programs on spools of paper tape. We didn't even have a CRT; just a
   teletype machine. (This would have been in 1975 or 6). We eventually got a 9 1/2" floppy drive and a CRT, and were some
   happenin' dudes. I've still got some of the spools, and the enormous floppy disk.}}}}}

   {{{{You had a teletype machine? We would have KILLED for a teletype machine! Once I had to write an entire operating system
   using nothing but a wall full of toggle switches! Keyboards.... HA! You had it easy! ;-) }}}}

   {{{You all had electricity? all we had was a bunch of gears that had to be rotated by hand...took years just to get the thing to add 1+1
   }}}

   {{You had gears ???? All we had was rocks and sticks. Rock = 0 and Stick =1. You'd get a line of code all written and then a dog
   would come and carry off your 1's and you'd have to start all over. You guys had it easy.}}

   You had rocks and sticks?? Geez, try growing up in the desert. . . Grains of sand made the coding damn near impossible!

Same here.

Actually, either mode is pretty much the same for me. Sometimes I use Word in WordPerfect mode, sometimes in Word mode. Doesn’t seem to bother me.

Or more likely, from what I’ve read over there, it’s from three things, and three things only: (1) Incredibly bad command of the English Language, (2) incredibly bad command of Logic, and (3) incredible lack of knowledge of the Bible.

I perused the Book of Mormon thread and got one rather large headache:

.
Remind you of anyone?

Opalcat - ROFL!!! Sounds like someone knew their Python, and translated it into the history of computing…

Opalcat—that was the funniest thing I have read in a long time. I think I may have injured myself laughing!

Born O.K. the first time…

If you are born again, do you have two belly-buttons?

evilbeth: Anybody up this late (or early) has got to be evil, doncha think? :wink:

Hey, just to protect people’s interests:

Opal collected the (hilarious) exchange above off the old AOL SDMB, and posted it. Somebody (I assume Ed) included it in Triumph of the Straight Dope, which is copyrighted material. So it is copyright, I would assume with Opal holding the rights to it.

Since there is some question about copying copyrighted material on the board, I thought I’d better post this to protect Opal’s legal rights!

Evilbeth asked:

Only if you then join the Navel Reserve! :slight_smile:

Excuse me for being stupid…but,

Can somebody explain what the whole bump references were on the Left Behind board?

It has been driving me crazy since I read it.
Where do you think most of LB members are from? I read that one of them is from my home state of Wisconsin and it made my skin crawl!!!

“It’s like banging your head against a wall because it feels so good when you stop.”

They tend to post messages with just the word “Bump” in them to, well, bump a thread back to the top of the list if it has fallen due to no recent responses while others have gotten recent responses. It’s a way to make sure the threads they want to keep going stay near the top. Of course, if it’s done with all the threads… :wink:
