These new herbal preparations can be too. Which is probably why there’s such a wide variation in the reported effects of the stuff. That wouldn’t be such a problem, if the FDA would just step in and regulate the manufacturers. 
I’ve now tried a few. K2 Summit, which is a lot like smoking potpourri, though I found it quite potent and extremely similar in experience to MJ. I also tried something called Black Mamba, which looked a lot like the real thing but wasn’t quite as potent as the K2. Most recently my wife bought home some stuff called Funky Monkey XXXX that was scented with strawberry. Its my favorite so far. As potent as the K2 but way smoother.
How did your homemade stuff end up being bad by “going overboard”? Is it easy to procure raw jwh-018?
As far as I’m aware it doesn’t because standard drug tests look for THC and these herbal incenses have jwh-018 instead. There are ways to detect jwh-018, but drug tests as they are right now don’t look for that substance.

Marijuana drug tests do not detect marijuana, they detect the nonactive metabolites left in your body after marijuana use. Because the JWH compounds are different than THC, the metabolites left behind are completely different and as of yet, no test is available to detect those specific metabolites. At least, that’s my basic understanding of why it can’t yet be tested for.
It’s very easy to get JWH-018, 073, 075, 250… there’s a whole bunch of them now, and there’s a bunch of places online where you can order them. Purity and color vary a lot, and I found a couple of suppliers websites that would be active one day and then without notice be inactive (all content gone, “under construction” page, etc.).
Never forget tho, that you’re placing a lot of trust in whoever is on the other end of that website. Unless you yourself are a qualified chemist, it’s unlikely you will ever know EXACTLY what you’re getting.
I’d rather not re-tell my tale of woe in detail. There are recipes online (one guy in particular seems to have posted the basic recipe to something like 50 forums), and I foolishly deviated from that recipe for my first batch. I ended having a pretty crappy day testing my shit, then I sent the rest down my garbage disposal.
The brand I was smoking seems to mostly be a Las Vegas thing, King Krypto.

stay away from this product. they charge you a tiny price for the spice and an astronomical price for the shipping. then when you get the stuff and try it, you see that it gets you almost high for almost 5 minutes. so you want to return it. but you paid $1 for the stuff and $45 for shipping, so all tko is required to refund is the dollar, not the shipping price.
they are scam artist with an inferior product. you have to be on drugs to fall for such nonsense.
The “Natural Incense” I had in mind in seeing the thread’s title is Salvia Divinorum, and it is legal in Canada - but not in some states - or was when I bought this here little packet just down the street. It produces a high nothing like marijuana. Nasty psychedelic (dissociative, actually) stuff. Not a party drug, nossir. It can stay in my desk drawer for another three years, or until I throw it out, and that’s fine with me.

I did the same thing a few years back. I got like an ounce of Salvia Div and found that it was a crappy, non-euphoric high (I agree it’s very subjective, dissociative with many physical side effects; i.e sweating, raised body temp, etc.). I have like 27.5g of the 28g I bought left over. I’d throw it out, but I figure if anyone ever mentions it and wants to try some (after I describe it’s effects to them), at least I can save them a few bucks.
There are a lot of horror stories surrounding this stuff on the net, pysch/ER visits, etc. In a lot of them they call the product K2, but I suspect that K2 has become a catchphrase for all herbal incenses in the media because there are so many and K2 is a popular brand.
I’ve tried genuine K2 and to me, the effect is almost exactly like MJ. I think some of these ER visits and such are from either sketchy suppliers or some homemade stuff that was too potent or had garbage ingredients.

Redwood Toxicology Laboratory has had JWH-018 and JWH-078 urine tests available since July 2010. The metabolites are detectable up to 72 hours after ingestion and the military is using this test now.

i do not reccomend this stuff. i tried it lastnight for the first time at my girlfriends house, in a bed, comfortable and relaxed. after smoking the joint of it my heart started racing uncontrollably and i couldnt control my breathing. i couldnt stop shaking and i had a terrible trip. it may be right for you, but definitely not for me

I’ve been trying it casually for about a month without any negative affects. I’m in the job hunt, so I’m staying away from the real stuff. What I’ve tried is strong, so I can see how if someone tried to smoke a whole fatty of this it would cause adverse effects. You have to start slow, a little at a time, until you find you comfort zone.
I’ve been getting a great deal on “Gonzo K-250” on Amazon.com. Seven grams for about $24 with free shipping. It’s medium-strong with 17.86mg/1g ratio of JWH-250 to damiama. It’s very consistent with no “hot spots.” JWH-250 is not one of the five synthetic cannabinoids banned by the DEA this week. I did try JWH-018 a few weeks ago while it was legal. I like the 250 better. Nice euphoric buzz, but like them all, it only lasts a couple hours. No after-effects.
