Shatner has announced that he won’t be at the funeral, because of a prior commitment to a charity event.
Uh-huh. I suspect the densest man in H’wood has finally clued that his presence isn’t wanted and would probably lead to other major figures finding excuses not to attend, which would be a crime.
I don’t see how Shatner’s presence at the funeral wouldn’t have been wanted, as he and Nimoy were close friends, unlike say, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, or Nichelle Nichols.
I won’t second-guess Shatner’s inability to attend Nimoy’s funeral. Jean Stapleton was unable to attend Carrol O’Connor’s funeral. Sometimes the timing just doesn’t work out. Either bail out on a charity commitment you made months in advance or miss the funeral of a friend who died within a day of the event. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.
Not mine. I just don’t get the irrational criticism of Shatner by some people every time his name is mentioned. It’s almost as if every single one of them has had an unpleasant personal encounter with him.
I can understand Shatner not being able to bail out of a charity commitment. Besides, from what I’ve been told recently, in Jewish culture it’s more important to attend the shiva (the eight-day “wake”) than the actual funeral. (Jewish funerals are usually held as quickly as possible, within 24 hours if they can do so.)
He’s a third-rate talent (charitably speaking) with an ego that made Orson Welles look modest, and by a lifetime of behavior if not clinical diagnosis he’s up with most Aspies in social obliviousness. He managed to deeply alienate some of the nicest, most accommodating people in the industry - Takei, for chrissakes? - and that Nimoy called him a close friend speaks far more of him than the Shat. Read any of his books - he just has No Idea why anyone thinks he and the ST crew aren’t still the best of buddies, and natters absolutely clueless things about why one or another of them wouldn’t take his call this or that time.
I’m a huge ST fan from the days before it needed a subindex… and I think Shatner is one of the most unpleasant people I’ve ever seen. The more so because he works so hard at being cheery and hail-fellow-well-met and in the end is less bearable than blowhards like Donald Trump, who works at being an ass.
Let’s face it, the Red Cross would accept any of a dozen replacements for him so he could attend the funeral of “his close friend,” industry partner for fifty years and cultural siamese twin. And even for Shatner, even more so for Nimoy, I’d bet the list of super-celebs who would step in is long.
No. He knows he’s not wanted there by anyone not in a box. And has finally clued up enough to know that if he attends, significant other people will not.
Yes, orthodox rule is that you’re in the ground by sundown of they day you die. I don’t know how observant Nimoy was, but that could be a factor here. It’s nothing unusual in this day and age for the family and friends of observant Jews to miss the burial, happens all the time what with people being flung all over the place.
Shiva is, in many ways, more important. It’s easy to say “charter a plane” but there are other factors, like weather, to consider. I’d rather Mr. Shatner arrive safely to give his condolences than come to grief trying to get there too fast.
Oh, okay, I see your point about the greatest fandoms but your identification of “the” stars of them sounds weirdly selective.
Why wouldn’t, say, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford for Star Wars and Mira Furlan for Babylon 5 also be part of such a tribute? Did they have some kind of issues with Nimoy? (I’m inclined to doubt it just because it’s hard for me to imagine anybody not liking Nimoy!)
Apparently, from what I’ve heard, Leonard did a well-received stint as Tevye. I wish I could find a recording of him somewhere, or a YouTube clip, or something, but so far no dice.
It kind of makes sense to have a skinny Tevye, doesn’t it? Nearly everyone who’s played Tevye has been quite plump, but isn’t this supposed to be a poor man who hardly knows where his next meal is coming from?
