Les habitants all know that the CN Tower is the tallest free standing STRUCTURE on the planet (we think). We’re still waiting for someone to build the tallest building in the world in Montreal.
So the Marquis is probably a young apprentice bricklayer, elevator mechanic, crane operator or tinbanger working in Toronto who hasn’t received all of his education yet. Canucks that I know,(at home, or playing in the US with me) are constantly amazed by the idea posited by the US press that Canadians are suffering from some sort of penis envy or inferiority complex when gazing upon our scarred southern neighbour from our little paradise.
It’s downright embarrasing when someone like The Marquis fits that stereotype.
Nevertheless, next time you do a story on the tallest buildings in the world, don’t forget that I can see Buffalo from a restaurant in Toronto.
Welcome to the SDMB, and thank you for posting your comment.
Please include a link to Cecil’s column if it’s on the straight dope web site.
To include a link, it can be as simple as including the web page location in your post (make sure there is a space before and after the text of the URL).
If the column is not yet on the straight dope web site, please mention in which book you have found it, or that it’s the most recent column, not yet posted on the site.
Our esteemed poster RM Mentock has kindly included links so that we can all be “on the same page”. Thank you RM Mentock.
According to CNN (Four feared trapped in burning Moscow tower), the Russian tower is shorter than the CN tower, but is (was?) the second highest tower in the world. The Russian tower is 540 metres (1,772ft) tall, while the CN tower is 553.55 meters (1,815 ft, 5 in).
Pssht. That’s nothing. If you read the older thread that RM kindly provided a link to, you’ll see that the world’s tallest structure is in North Dakota. It’s the KVLY-TV tower and it is 2,063 feet high. It is not free-standing, however. A taller antenna apparently existed in Poland for a while but recently fell down.
First off, I never meant to hurt your feelings Mr. Adams. I simply felt a patriotic duty to point out what I deemed to be an oversight on your part. Clearly, you disagree. That’s your right, and it’s your column.
I do have to say that in my opinion your pup-tent antenna idea would not qualify in any category due to its temporary nature, but that’s just nitpicking and I’m sure you would disagree with me there too. C’est la vie.
However, I do stick to my guns in my original arguement that the CN Tower is in fact a building. You said so yourself, “The CN Tower isn’t primarily a building.”
I doubt Cecil was offended. Read his columns a bit more and you’ll see responses like he gave to you fairly often. Someone in the other thread included the final word on the matter from the Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat, and they’re the people that get to decide such things officially. If it helps you sleep at night, the Guiness Book of World Records agrees with you, though.
That TV tower in Moscow isn’t a free-standing structure, as the CN Tower is. Some of the guy wires were damaged in the fire, leading to fears that it was going to fall. As of this writing it hasn’t, but if I were travelling to Moscow in the near future I would be a bit cautious about standing near it for long periods of time…
The tallest structure of any type is apparently a radio/TV mast in the Dakotas. Why on earth does one need a super-tall broadcasting antenna in such flat country?
I may be way off here, but I would have thought you would only have a really tall antenna in flat country. If the land is hilly a tall antenna won’t be much good, because there will be spots in “shadow”. Lots of smaller antennae would be needed. If it is flat, one tall antenna would suffice for a large area.
Hello,
I’ve seen in the Guiness Book that the CN Tower is the tallest freestanding (NO guy-wires) structure on the planet. I’m not Canadian but I have been in there and there is nothing like drinking good Canadian Beer and dancing in a club in which, when you get near the window, it feels like you are in an airplane! There maybe tall buildings, but there is no better place to get “high” in Toronto than the CN Tower!
