I wish I could remember the name of the comedienne who I first heard say this:
“A guy came up to me in a bar and said, ‘Hey, baby, I’ve got what you want.’ I said, ‘Yeah, but unfortunately you’re attached to one end of it.’”
All j/k aside . . . .
Astro’s post re the masculine and feminine brain interested me but struck me as too simplified. There are many areas of “wiring” in the brain, and the one relating to being attracted to one gender or another (or both) isn’t necessarily attached to other gender-related neurological traits.
At any rate, there isn’t a known correspondence between what is the neurologically male brain type and being a lesbian. Also, as a female with a neurologically and functionally mostly male kind of a brain, I can guarantee that I’m a straight chick.
(How do I know that I’m neurogically and functionally “male-brained”? Research and some serious hunting up of highly specialized diagnosticians.)
In re said research: Simon Baron-Cohen, of Cambridge’s Autism Research Center, has done what is currently considered the “state of the art” in research on the masculine and feminine brains. He has pointed out in many publications that the “masculine” (aka “systematizing”) and “feminine” (aka “empathizing”) brain types both occur in both genders, and that the two types are in fact rather represent the areas on a spectrum of traits where the largest numbers of men and women “clump” neurologically. There are probably individual humans of both genders at every given point on the male/female continuum.
At any rate, there is so far no strong indication of lesbians tending to be neurologically male or gay dudes tending to be neurologically female. And I know an awful lot of gay guys who spend most of their time wearing jeans and flannel shirts and own lots of power tools.
On “Crank Yankers,” one of the advertising billboards that can be seen in the opening credits says, “Dildo: It’s the Other Penis.”
At least they didn’t call it “the other white meat.”
