Fathom.org (a high quality but low volume board) used to be one of those places, but has gotten almost none in past couple of years. Their “SDMB Haven” forum has been renamed to:

I think there’s freebie blog sites that change with the seasons, but I don’t have much use for gossip so I don’t follow them, just see references by others about feuds etc.
