Let me tell you about Lissener...

…using his own fucked up reasoning.

He is white, unmarried, lives with someone else (also white) who isn’t in his family, and both are 35 years old. He makes $45,736 dollars a year. He has a wireless internet connection and likes kids. His rent is $935 per month. He is slowly becoming Hispanic at an average rate of about 5% per year.

He works for the Department of Defense writing software. He drinks gourmet coffee, eats exotic fish, and plays more than one musical instrument. Having attended the prestigious University of Washington for 4.3 years, he is smarter than most people in New York or Atlanta. He is smarter than anyone in Detroit or Washington, DC.

He voted to approve light rail mass transit which he doesn’t use. He flies 7.5% more often than he did two years ago, and he lives 3 miles from a seaport. His utility bill is $211 per month. And despite that he suffers from a deficiency of vitamin D, he is in excellent physical shape — one of the fittest human specimens in the US.

How do I know all these things? Because his location is Seattle, silly.

Of course, he is surrounded by 563,373 other Seattleans who are just like him — except that half of them are female, 8,000 of them are homeless, a big chunk of them work in bio-tech, a few thousand are high school dropouts, an alarming number of them hoard human waste, and some of them weigh more than 300 pounds.

But since those exceptions are inconvenient toward my purpose of extrapolating from the particular to the general, I will ignore them.

This is an awful analogy.

Wait for it. Waaaait for it…

Bash bash bash

SHOWGIRLS!!

Bash bash bash

Wait, are you trying to tell us lissener’s gay?

So…where’s the beef ?

:: adopts recent lissener pose :: blah…blah…blah…selfrighteous voyeurism…blah…blah…blah…

You’ve used this term at least twice lately that I know of. What’s up with that, lis? Is it a newly-minted phrase that you’ve concocted, or have you just read it somewhere?

This is the kind of instance where linking to a post within its thread (as opposed to linking to a single post) would be helpful because by itself, the post is too cryptic to be meaningful. In context, it might just be a brilliant quip of the kind routinely made by, for example, me.

In other words, I’m lazy! Spoonfeed me the context! WAAAAHH!!

Once you realize that Seattle is a Christian university, the analogy works great.

Oh, you mean it’s not?

I wouldn’t guess that of Lissener based upon his living in Seattle, what with Seattle being a city of 4 million people and there being relatively little that’s common to 4 million people who happen to live in a same metro area for various reasons, unlike let’s say 4000 people who happen to all voluntarily go to the same college that’s founded on a very narrow and explicitly stated ideology.

Now if, hypothetical situation here, Lissener were to attend- I don’t know- Bob Jones University, then I’d very possibly guess that Lissener is an extremely conservative and unapologetically intolerant Fundamentalist Protestant Christian who cared more about religiopolitical ideology than real learning. I’d think that for two reasons, the first being just a hunch. The second is because he chose to pay $12,000 per year in tuition/residency/fees to attend a college that makes absolutely no secret about being unapologetically intolerant Fundamentalist Protestant Christian institution (they’ve expelled people for listening to BILLY GRAHAM FOR GOD’S SAKE!) that does not teach but in fact actively denies evolution and other non biblical subjects and is not even accredited by SACS (the organization that accredits 99% of southern colleges and schools- every region has an equivalent one with equal standards) but takes its accreditation from a conservative religious body, meaning that the credits accrued at considerable expense there are largely useless for transfer or professional purposes and thus it is logical to construe that, since in addition to this there’s no such thing as sex or drinking or a really awesome party scene there, Lissener cares more about super-conservative Fundamentalist theology than he does a balanced college education.

But then I also happen to think “bet he’s Mormon” when I hear somebody attended Brigham Young University even though almost 2% of their students are other religions, so I guess I’m something of a profiler type.

That cracked me right up! And if you get shit Lib, they just don’t get it.

Priceless! He better hurry up if he wants to come to the South Valley where I live.

Well done!

Oh, Bob Jones University. I assumed… something else.

What exactly did Lissner extrapolate in that thread that you think is invalid? I admittedly just skimmed through for yours and his last few posts, but he didn’t even really say anything except beyond the fact that people who go to BJU aren’t a random subset of the population. He didn’t even say how he thought they weren’t random that I could see (except maybe implictly agreeing with DtC that they were a “certain type of christian”.

Hey, given the Mickey Mouse courses that Unis are prepared to offer nowadays, it won’t be too long before BJU DOES become, um…something else.

Can I insert a mild hijack here?

It really pisses me off when people post an OP that only includes the ‘Single Post’ option in reference to their gripe/argument. It gives no notion of the context, and forces me to read the entire thread that precipitated it to get an idea of what the fuck is happening.

And to be perfectly honest, I’m not prepared to sit and wade through an ‘American Idol’ thread in CS. Might I suggest that posters state their case more clearly (not just you Lib, others have done it as well) because it does your argument no good otherwise.

/hijack.

Are you telling me you actually expect somebody to post a coherent and concise review of a thread (with links even?) before they Pit it?

Ah, such as it would be…

Burnies. Oooh.

Yeah, I DO expect it. And I am regularly disappointed when it doesn’t happen of course. Hey, what are dreams for anyway???

Not really a burn, I agree, but as you say, we can dream…

Psst…lissener as a fellow Seattleite with $535 in rent who lives with someone who’s grey and furry and has had to fend off several people who are becoming crack addicts at 5% per year…

I’m still confused by your link.

(But we’re still going to do that triathalon, right? We can read while we do it; we read more books than other people.)

(Both links only showed single posts…I need context, dammit.)

Yup, Sampiro nailed it.

Lib – you’re wrong. Be a man, apologize and let it go.

It’s an equally safe bet (almost) that a Seattlean is white, but as a participant in the AI discussions, you know that this issue is about Chris Sligh, who has showed exactly zero indication of intolerance of any kind. As to the cost of tuition, it is often paid by parents against whom teenagers sometimes rebel. So, assuming that because some (or even most) students at BJU are intolerant bigots, it does not follow that the same is true for all of them in general.

(For those who wanted context ^^^).

((And Twickster, let the grudge go, my friend. Forgiveness heals the forgiver.))
