Let us discuss canned meat products

You can get it on Amazon In the paper.
Plus the liverwurst or corned beef flavors as well.

I just ordered some. I’ll let you know if it’s paper wrapped, when it comes

Canned salmon makes relatively tasty patties, with crumbs, egg, and scallions, fried in butter. Canned tuna is edible that way, and for me, in few others.

Corned beef is base camp food, served with fried eggs and potatoes. Very tasty after a day of hiking at altitude. It’s the only time it is digestible to me. Normally it sits in my stomach like a bag of sand, like many things I used to eat up without a qualm (see: doughnuts).

A legacy from my father which I occasionally indulge in: kippered herring on toast or swedish crispbread. Can only be eaten at night, with insomnia.

When in Sweden our opinionated landlady told my husband that pickled herring was man food, only men eat it. He didn’t argue. I didn’t either, bleah. Swedish grocery stores have banks of refrigerator cases filled with picked herring in unimaginable variety.

I’ve posted this story elsewhere on SDMB: I was the scoutmaster for a summer camp, where one night was a cook-off competition between the troops. Lots of other troops made very fancy dishes, such as spicy chili or bbq or braised chicken dinners. I had my troop simply make chocolate-chip pancakes and SPAM (since the home of SPAM in just a few miles from our town). And we won! The judges said it was the meal that they would want to eat again and for seconds. And they did come back for seconds. (It was the first time most in the troop had eaten SPAM; they loved it, at least while camping and hungry.)

Sometimes I used canned corned beef to make “reubens.” It’s really a reuben spread. Mashed up corned beef with sauerkraut and thousand island, spread on rye, add sliced swiss and toast the assembled sandwich in a pan w/ butter. It’s not bad and makes a lot of sandwiches.

Chocolate chip pancakes and Spam sounds like the perfect combination-- sweet pancakes and salty meat. When I have pancakes or French toast, I always want bacon or sausage with it.

That sounds pretty good, too.

This is my main use for canned salmon or tuna, generally the Kirkland brand from Costo, which is of fair to above-average quality especially for the cost.

If I’m making a fish burger it’s easier and cheaper to use than buying any sort of IQF and thawed fish from my local Kroger, although I think @Ulfreida’s option is lacking in a few additional ingredients I always want to have (capsicums, garlic, onion, and just a touch of hot sauce or fish sauce).

This is not a dig on Ulfreida, just about different preferences!

The only other canned meat substance in my house are a dozen or so boxed canns of the Season Brand Skinless and Boneless Sardines in 100% Olive Oil, which I also get from Costco.

They’re a holdover from when I was low-carbing, last a long time, easy to open, have almost no “stuff” added, and were easy to take to work. I generally ate them with a fork and hot sauce and they were fine, filling, and left me feeling a lot less hungry than something carby.

Since, I’ve added them to various mixed greens from time to time, but they’re also useful as a shelf-stable emergency food to eat in house with no need to refrigerate or cook. I’ll pretty much use a few before they expire, then buy another pack of a half dozen or so.

Still, I probably won’t bother to replace the dozen I have left, as I don’t have a strong need for them, and while Costco is cheaper than Amazon, they’ve gone up steadily in price.

I like the sardines in mustard sauce. Not as easy to find as they used to be.

During the last year of her life, my sweet dog Sweetie put away a can of low sodium sardines packed in water on most days for breakfast.

Sounds good! I’ll have to give it a try, since I just used the last of my sliced corned beef to make a Reuben for dinner.

Has anybody tried canned corned mutton? I have a tin of the stuff from Australia that I haven’t opened yet.

A bit dated, but I suspect things haven’t changed since:

I learned about Wolf chili watching King of the Hill. I wanted to try it so badly that I ordered a six-pack of the beanless variety from Amazon. It was okay, but I’m not about to pay ~$10 for a can of chili ever again.

I remember eating Vienna sausages as part of my “Army rations” when I was a kid. Nowadays, I can’t look at them without thinking of a bris gone wrong.

I am dubious of canned meat.
But on occasion, I do enjoy a tin of smoked oysters.
I understand that is an oxymoron; and not even sure when I first tried it?
FYI on occasion they are gritty, because … they were oysters

$10 per can? :scream: Dude, you got robbed.

What can I say? I can’t find it in Canada!

We don’t get Wolf canned chili in Canada. But we do get Stagg, which is probably the best of the canned chilis.

Gak, even Tim Hortons canned chili is at my local supermarket.

Does Dinty Moore beef stew count? I used to love the stuff — excellent beef and vegs, good consistency — but haven’t had it in decades because the sodium content was so high, I was afraid a small can would turn me into a well-seasoned corpse.

I think we’re stretching into soups here, but I like the stuff myself (in moderation, of course). I’m also partial to Campbell’s Chunky soups, especially the clam chowder.

I kind of like the Chunky Sirloin Burger, although I’m pretty sure those aren’t really sirloin burgers in there. The gravy with that soup (if you can call a soup gravy-like) is pretty good.

Off track a bit here, but Campbell’s has announced they’re dropping the ‘Soup’ from their brand name.

Canned chopped clams are a staple item for me. I love a good white or red clam pasta sauce. And I have purchased whole clams, shucked them, and carefully reserved the clam liquor to make said pasta sauces. But that part of it is pretty time-consuming, making it strictly a weekend thing. Starting with canned clams though? Much, much easier, making it pretty simple to throw together a weeknight pasta with clam sauce.

I went to H-E-B this morning and they were out of Underwood Deviled Ham spread!! WHAT?? They had chicken, roast beef, and liver, but the ham slot was completely empty. WAAAHHH! Did someone from this thread go and buy it all up?

Speaking of meat, I’ve started a new thread, but not about canned meat:
