Let's cast future Harry Potter films!

I’ve been looking over some of the choices suggested here.

Helen McCrory was only suggested by The Mirror, not really a reliable source. The Mirror is the kind of paper which inspired the character of Rita Skeeter.

I remember before Goblet of Fire came out, people had Rowan Atkinson as Voldemort, though the other rumour – John Malkovich – was more intriguing.

Still, McCrory definitely looks the part. If she can act, too then she has my vote. I’ve only seen her bit part in Interview with a Vampire, and that’s not much to go on. I wonder if they’ll pronounce the name Lestrange as Rowling herself does (LESTRAWNGE) or like most of the fans do (LESTRAYNGE).

Anna Friel has definitely said she’d do Tonks – just no one’s asked her yet. Her boytoy, who plays Lupin, is really enthusiastic about the series. After he got the role of Lupin, he installed a “No Muggles Allowed” sign on his front lawn

Warner Brothers sent out a public casting call for Luna less than a month ago, which means that, like Cho, she shall be played by an unknown. Hopefully they’ll luck out with Luna like they did with Katie Leung, who’s a fine actress for someone her age.

I could see Neeson as Scrimgeour.

I guarantee you Lavender will be in the Half-Blood Prince. Why? Because the pre-teen girl fans obsessed with romance, if they are denied their fix, shall swim to Warner Brothers Studios with machetes in their mouths, and off the studio execs.

Nobody wants to deny the shippers. For them, the romantic stuff in the series is a form of crack cocaine. It also sells a movie.

We had a discussion on a Harry Potter geek board awhile back about what Lavender looks like. She has never been physically described (though I think it says somewhere that she has braces – not sure, though). There is a woman credited as “Lavender Brown” in Prisoner of Azkaban. She was an extra, though, and I don’t believe she has a speaking role. Named extras are an unusual phenomenon, and I’ve never seen it in another series, but there are named extras in the HP series (Millicent Bulstrode is in the first movie, at least).

Lavender was played by a girl named Jennifer Smith, though the IMDB has no picture of her and I’ve never seen her in another movie. There are filographies all over the net that list her in different films, but I think they’re getting confused because Jennifer Smith is a common name. IMDB just has Azkaban.

So far, whenever a background character has become important, rather than teaching the child to act, they simply recast them. There was a Parvati Patil in Prisoner of Azkaban – she turned a snake into a jack-in-the-box – but she was played by Sitara Shah. When they wanted a Parvati who could play a role, they sent out a casting call. Clearly poor Sitara didn’t make the cut, and Shefali Chowdhury was cast instead.

We tried to figure out who Lavender Brown was. She is most frequently identified as a heavyset black girl in the background of Azkaban. I’ve never heard a reliable cite for that, but I suppose she’s as likely a candidate as any. Since Rowling supplies the information about hair colour, eye colour, race, and build to Warner Brothers, then it’s safe to say that even if Smith doesn’t come back for the role, someone similar-looking will be cast.

Just watching an interview with the producer of Order of the Phoenix:

Grawp yes, Rita no?

CRAP.

Charlotte Coleman (IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0170976/)

Sigh. From the moment I first read Tonks, she’s who I saw in my mind’s eye. I know, even were she still alive, she’d be too old though.

He had one in the first SW prequel. And he’s had long hair before, so he could definitely pull it off.
I still want to see Kate Winslet as Tonks. She was rumored to have gotten the part of Fleur early on, but it was quickly debunked.

(Oh, and btw, there are nudes of David Thewlis floating around the Life Journal community, Oh No They Didn’t).

I know Tom Felton(Draco) said he’ll do as many HP films as they ask him to do, which I’m very happy with. He plays Draco really, really well.
…and he’s cute.

I can’t think of anyone to play Luna or Lavender though, at least anyone famous. I would totally do it but, alas, I’m American. :frowning:

Wouldn’t Ewan be too old to be Bill? Bill is in his early to mid twenties.

I hope the guy who played Tom Riddle Jr. comes back for the sixth movie. He looked exactly how I pictured him and plays Tom (aka Voldy) really well.

Ewan’s in his mid-thirties, but he looks young for his age, I think. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

Okay, on the Kingsley Shacklebolt front, what about Robbie Gee (he’s the one in the back seat)? Or Vas Blackwood ?
I think either would be able to pull it off. Vas Blackwood might be nearing the upper age limit for the character, though.

Kate Winslet is probably the best actor in the world and is stunningly beautiful, but she’s a buxom, voluptuous woman and doesn’t look at all like the way Tonks is described. Tonks is literally part nymph. Winslet is not nymphesque. She’s a terrible choice, lookswise.

Truth be told, Tonks is simply not an important character, and I’d say it’s 50-50 her part is reduced to the point that it will make little difference who plays her.

Literally part nymph? Her name’s Nymphadora, and she’s described as elven-looking, but her mother is pureblood Andromeda Black, and her father Muggle Ted Tonks. Neither “pureblood” nor “Muggle” are ever terms applied to people who are “part-humans” or “half-breeds.”

You’re probably right for the fifth movie, but she’ll be cast anyway because she’s an enormously popular character. Also, because given the unquenchable thirst for romance among the critical pre-teen market, the directors will ignore her romance with Lupin in the 6th at their peril.

I say they should just cast Anna Friel in the role: she’s girlfriend of the actor playing Lupin, she can act, she wants the job, and she’s available. The fans want it, and it would save them the trouble of looking for someone.

Is there anything in the books that suggests Tonks is particularly attractive? Harry thinks she’s cool, but outside the imaginations of adoring fans, I don’t think there’s any reason to believe she’s stunning. You’d think, given that it’s written from Harry’s P.O.V., it would be noted if Tonks were particularly attractive. I mean, come on - a good looking, older woman?

That said, I do think Keira Knightley would play the part well. Think of her more in Bend It Like Beckham rather than Pirates of the Carribean or Pride and Prejudice.

But I’m willing to bet they do throw it out. Frankly, it was a throwaway bit for Rowling (I suspect one of her "I’d have liked to, but this was what I had time for bits). They have so much to cover in these books, that I’m willing to bet Lupin/Tonks and Weasley brother can’t remember which/Fleur get thrown aside.

Its actually kind of telling to see what gets thrown out. Dollars to doughnuts, we’ve just been told Percy isn’t important at all to the central plot, since his breech with the Weasleys was completely left out of GoF. Likewise, if Rowling intended Bellatrix to be more of a “second banana big bad guy” she’d have gotten more of a set up in the GoF movie - along with Neville’s parents. Granted, the books will have more depth than the movies in these parts by their nature, but if Percy was to be a pivot point, it would have required setting it up here.

I dunno 'bout that-they cut Rita’s animagus and that is indeed crucial to the next film. Then again, I feel that GOF(movie) was hacked to pieces and then spliced together at random.
Charlotte Coleman is exactly who I was thinking of! I did not know she was dead.

:frowning:

They need to clone her someway–she IS Tonks. I can see the bubble-gum pink hair now!
If filming starts in Feb-when would the movie come out? Not '06? Maybe early '07?

And does anyone know when the last book is due out? (sorry, OT).
Hugh Grant would have been perfect for Lockhart!

And what is Lockhart doing in the next film?

I agree. There was nothing romantic about Beetle Skeeter, but they couldn’t get rid of her because the fans wanted to see her in a film. So they drastically cut her part.

Since they take fan demands into account, now, everything romantic has a higher priority than the plot

Projected release date is June 2007.

Rowling said she needed a year off because of her new daughter, Mackenzie. She estimates the last book will take a year to write.

I’m not sure if she meant “a year off” starting with when she finished (December 2004) or when the last book was released. Either way, we’re looking t 2007 for that, too, probably.

He’s at St-Mungo’s, having his brain put back together, of course

My personal choice for Kingsley would be Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played The Operative on Serenity. He would seriously kick ass.
