Let's do a San Antonio (and environs) Dopefest!

Sounds like we’ve got a woman who can make a plan. Where is Dick’s?

Hey, I’m all about making command desicions. Dicks is…ummm…on the riverwalk? Not far down from a mall, I think? I might have to look into that some more, unless someone else has more coherent directions.

Gotta see if I can get a few things juggled. I’d like to meet some of our fellow dopers.

I think purplebear lives near here as well…

Gotta pump some air into this thing.

Now to go see what happens when I Google for “Dick’s.”

That wasn’t too bad. Is this the place mentioned above?

Ringo’s last resort.

Poor Ringo!

You should have called on the San Antonio Expert. Aka your humble Audrey. I would’ve come to your rescue sooner, but I haven’t been to the boards in a week b/c I suck and I haven’t had time.

I don’t know if I’ll be off that day–Saturday’s really hard for me to get off, b/c it’s the weekend–but I do have recommendations as to where to go, seeing as I BARTEND ON THE RIVERWALK.

Dick’s is good in theory, but in practice most of the staff there isn’t nearly as much fun as you’d think. The whole idea of Dick’s is that the staff is a bunch of hard-working smartasses.

But now they’re just boring and rude. Their idea of “funny” is giving bad service, and then bitching you out when you have a problem with it. Yeah. Not my idea of where to spend hard-earned cash. Rude is not funny.

Is this dinner or drinks we’re talking about? If I were you guys, I’d go to La Margarita…it’s the best Mexican food downtown and I’ve been going there since I was like five years old. It’s not ON the Riverwalk, but it’s a hop-skip-jump from there, and they have a really cool patio with tiled tables and mariachis and fabulous frozen margaritas. It’s in Market Square, which is a little “Mexican village/flea market” on Market Street. It’s a $0.50 trolley ride to get there from the Riverwalk…it takes like five minutes from the Rivercenter Mall. (It’s like six blocks, so you could walk it if you’re feeling froggy, but the trolleys are too much fun to skip.)

People are always asking me where to eat on the Riverwalk, and I always send them to La Margarita instead. It’s where I always take people from out of town if they want to do the downtown dinner thing, and it’s totally easy to head back to the Riverwalk for drinks and stuff afterwards.

And if I’m working, I’d love for you guys to stop by and have a margarita at my bar afterwards. I don’t feel comfortable posting where I work on the SDMB, but if you’d like to stop by and see me if I’m working, email me and I’ll give you the info on how to find me. I’m right on the Riverwalk.

So let me know what you guys think!

Hi, y’all! I’d be up for it. La Margarita is a good choice for dinner. Maybe Swig after for drinks. I’ll see what the schedule looks like closer to the 31st.

OK, either one is fine with me. What do y’all think?

Man, I wish I could be there. I’ve been TDY to San Antonio a couple of times. La Marguerita IS good. For after dinner, I’d recommend Howl at the Moon, also located on Riverwalk. Your face literally HURTS after being there. The whole point of that place is audience participation.

It’s a bar, with two grand pianos and (usually) two guys singing songs, most of them oldies, but goodies. Certain parts of certain songs require you (the audience to participate). Also, for little green “notes”, they’ll pull someone up on the stage and sing funny songs to them. Every time someone leaves the stage, everyone is required to sing “You Picked Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille”. They also pull you up on the stage and make you dance (that happened to me). Somewhat embarrassing, but fun all the same.

Dick’s was fun, but Howl at the Moon is a much better place.

La Margaritas sounds fine… I just MIGHT be able to make this one…It IS super bowl weekend!!

Maybe some super bowl parties after???

OK, so command decisions needed, or I’m about to make them.

Saturday, January 31st

Oops! I get busy IRL and don’t peruse my favorite website, and look what I miss! I am up for a get together, I think. Only one thing that may get in the way of me having fun. I am having my teeth pulled next Wed, the 28th. (Long story, tell you there, those who are interested.) So, I doubt I’ll be up to eating anything, and too doped on pain killers to drink margaritas. But I would love to join y’all.

Only y’all have to promise not to laugh at my face, please. Trust me, it won’t be pretty, I’m guessing. When I had my upper teeth pulled last Oct, my face looked like I’d been on a long bout of steroids, and as if Mr Bear had used me for a punching bag.

Now, I haven’t been to La Margarita, but it sounds like my kind of place. As does Howl at the Moon, though I will see how I’m feeling during dinner. I even know roughly how to get there, if it’s in Market Square. You can park on top of the Farmer’s Market for change, for those of you wanting to drive there. (Unless they close it after dark, hmm… do you know, Audrey?)

I’ll keep an eye on this, and am looking forward to seeing new dopers there. And old friends, like Ringo. Ok, so you’re not old, but I’ve known you for several years now.

So, should we try for a headcount?

I’m a strong possible; i.e., I can do it, but not alone.

Okay, let’s do La Margarita! I’ll be there, Ringo, so there’s two of us, anyway.

Great Lucretia! How about 6:00 PM, then?

C’mon now, sign up y’all!

And if any locals care to offer hotel advice, I’d appreciate it. I wouldn’t mind being able to leave the car at the hotel (then I can have a 'rita or two).

Trawling (not trolling) for attendees…

hee… That’s cute, Ringo. Well, like I said, I should be there. And probably Mr Bear as well. As to hotels… not sure what to suggest, really. I will do some checking on Sat, and get back to you. The only ones that come to mind off the top of my head are the downtown Mariotts (there are two, right across the street from each other, on either side of the riverwalk). And the Hotel Palacio Del Rio, now one of the Hiltons, I think. Both rather pricy. Hmm… I’ll do some checking, and see what I come up with.

3, possibly 4…

Get in while you still can!

A week away,
Sign up today.
