The Very First AlamoDopefest Ever

I have been lonely, missing all of you fellow Texans. So, I decided to host my very own AlamoDopefest right here in the great city of San Antonio. That’s in Texas, for y’all who don’t have the luck to live here.

Ok, on to the specifics… I am open as to location and what to do. As to dates, my suggestion is a Friday evening, or a Saturday afternoon/into evening time frame. I am available Saturday June 14th, or June 27th-28th. Yeah, I know, not a lot of choices in June. If neither of those works for many people, we can certainly look into July’s schedule. I want Mr Bear to be able to attend, so either Friday eve or Sat afternoon will have to do for his schedule. [sub](He gets up on Sundays at 4am for work.)[/sub]

Now, for my suggestions as to locale:

[ul]
[li]Downtown, at one of the many hot spots along The Riverwalk[/li][li]Dinner on our very own Dinner Barge on said Riverwalk [/li][li]Dave and Buster’s, where The Nerd and Friend met the Bears for dinner[/li][li]El Maracumbe restaurant, off the beaten path, excellent Mexican[/li][li]Rudy’s Barbeque. Real Texas Homemade BBQ. 'Nuff said.[/li][/ul]

And many more. Let me know what everyone has a hankerin’ for, and I’ll do my best. Also, I would like to hear from the other Alamo City Dopers, if they can come, what their suggestions may be, etc.

I hope to entice all of the Texas Dopers I can, from D/FW, Austin, Houston, etc. So, please come, one and all. A special invite to a friend up in Washington and another in NY. Please come if you can.
purrplebear, looking forward to seeing her doper friends soon…
*hugs will be provided at no charge to all who want one or more…

I think I’m good w/this purrplebear. I might even bring Mrs. Dirk…San Antonio works well for me since I live in the heart of the Hill Country (yes, you may now officially envy me!). Anything on the NW side is really good, such as D&B, since it’s right off I-10…

I’m definitely interested. The weekend of the 13th and 14th has a probable conflict. I’ll watch and see what develops here. I’ve never seen the Riverwalk.

A post-Spurs-championship party, huh? I wish I could be there.

Way cool, DirkGntly. I am officially green with envy. I live on the SW side, but pretty much anywhere is good for me. Heck, if I can head over to Houston or up to Austin or D/FW for a dopefest, then I can certainly travel across town to meet Dopers.

Ringo! You haven’t seen The Riverwalk yet?! We will just have to rectify that error post haste. C’mon over.

Yep. That too, green_bladder. I am however refusing to fork out triple digits greenbacks for even the cheap seats; fighting that traffic, etc. I’m just watching it on tv. In between here, Enterprise, Doc and Diagnosis Murder, of course. Not to mention finishing up my niece’s quilt.

Welcome to those I don’t know yet, but hope to. Hello, to old friends. Not that you’re old, beatle, err… Ringo. Sorry for the slip.

Of the tongue, get your mind out of the bedroom, people. :stuck_out_tongue:

purrplebear, heading back to her quilt for a bit…

I’m in. I definitely need to make a trip to San Antonio. This is a great excuse.

OH MY GOD!!! Hey Buddie!!! Wish I could just mosey on down there. Here’s a big Texas hug to you from this rained soaked beach girl…

Wohoo! Two of my favorite people. Hello, Jim, GBS! I’m glad you’re coming down, Jim. Yes, you owe me a trip or two.

GBS, so great to hear from you. Rain-soaked beach girl? Do tell. Send some this way. Oh, wait. Not this week. We finally broke our drought. Big Texas Hug right back atcha.

Wow. I managed to kill my own thread, it seems. Surely there are more Texas Dopers out there who would come to San Antonio? Or NYers, or someone from any other state?

I love it. I leave Texas, and y’all have a Dopefest. Have a good time! :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, and keep the last week of July/first weekend of August open. A certain Thoroughbred Doper is celebrating his first birthday in Texas.

Robin

For what it’s worth, I’ll be in San Antonio on June 14th. However, I’m driving down there with my girlfriend for her uncle’s wedding on the 13th, and I won’t have my own vehicle, so it’s hard to say if I’ll be able to meet up with anyone. Still, maybe I can make lunch or dinner or something.

I’m in SA. Just follow the monkey smell (gags-- it’s been raining)

The weekend of the 13th sounds GREAT for me. Work is gonna suck that week. I’ll be out of town the the weekend of the 27th. Basically any time other than the weekend of the 27th, count me in! HA! I can’t miss this one since I can leave the party for 40 min to take care of my work.
Might I suggest one thing: The Flying Saucer has an amazing selection of beer (200+ types) and Martini’s (Next to Northstar Mall) makes the BEST hurricanes, and has live music on firdays and saturdays.

Hrrm I suggested two things. I blame the monkeys.

Good to hear from you, Max Torque. Lunch or dinner on the 14th is fine with me. CRorex, I just want to know when Firday is. Is that before or after Saturday?

I have limited knowledge of bars/clubs, so will defer to CRorex on that. I was really hoping for a place that serves meals as well as drinks. Someplace kidfriendly for those under 21, like our daughter. Ok, so far I see 2 for the 14th, and one for the following weekend. Well, nothing says we can’t do two Dopefests back to back. I gotta get Ringo over here to see The Riverwalk. The D & B’s would be a good place for food, drinks, and fun. Jim, Dirk and Mrs have yet to weigh in with their choice for dates. Speak up, y’all.

I can do both dates, if that works out best. I am determined to get as many here as possible. Where are the other San Antonian dopers? There have to be more, I know there are.
purrplebear, off to watch her daughter’s group bowl for a few hours…

Ok, chiming in. Let’s see, I probably can’t make both if there are two gatherings.

Having a Texas dopefest at the exclusion of beatle, I mean Ringo, sounds like a sacrilege.

So, if there is going to be two and one includes Ringo, Riverwalk, Alamo, grabbing beers at sidewalk cafes, Circus Museum, Dinner Barge, that sort of thing. Then finding a bar and getting plastered and spending the night in the gutter, I’ll take that one.

If there is only one, I’ll try to make it no matter when it is. Fridays are pretty much out though. While I have made the 300 trek in a little over 3 1/2 hours, I can’t really count on that, especially on a Friday night, so I don’t think I could be there in time for a Friday night thing.

Well, blast and rats.

I would just LOVE to mosey on down there and join you all for an AlamoDopeFest. Heh…I’d love to mosey on down there just to sit on the couch at the purrplebear house and drink iced tea and do crafts for a weekend…or a week…or a month…but I digress.

The thing is, it seems like everyone I know is getting married. And they have chosen to do this all over the country…[sub]don’t you think this is kind of inconsiderate? I mean, you’d think they could all consolidate things and then move them to the PNW. SOME people are SO inconsiderate…;)[/sub] AND Canada. Hmph, and I say, HMPH again!

I wish I could be there, but I highly recommend the Riverwalk AND the Alamo…especially if the tours are conducted by purrplebear and MrBear…they conducted MINE, and I had a wonderful time. [sub]Now, don’t allow them to exaggerate…I only read all the exhibits at the Alamo ONCE…any tales of me reading them twice or even three times are GREATLY exaggerated. Trust me. :o[/sub]

Love you, darlings!

Cheri

Is it just me or have we been without you around these boards for a heckuva long time, Purrp?

I haven’t seen your screen name in donkey’s ears. Miss you!

Wish I could head down to Texas, but I’m blowing the coop for Czarcasm’s Portland fest in August. Rats and drat all!

I’m all ears, y’all. I want to do this one. The potential problem with the weekend of the 13th is that an old friend, who’s an opera singer who moved to NY 13 or 14 years ago, is scheduled to sing here that weekend. But he’s scheduled to perform both Friday and Saturday night, so if it’s a crunch for others, I can probably see him Friday night here in Houston and gather with our crew in S.A. on Saturday.

Hrrm…

Martini’s doesn’t serve food. That being said, if there is some late night debauchery that interests people, it’s a fairly good place to do that. There are also things west of Calahan on Fredricksburg road that are dive bars.

The flying saucer had general bar food (good onion rings) and it set up like a typical beer garden – large picnic table dealies. However, it’s literally a sit and drink beer with your friends sort of place. I’m also unsure about the Texas laws regarding underage persons being in bars.

! oh I just remmebered. There is an historic bar/old west museum/natural oddities place down off houson street about 3 blocks from the Alamo. A couple of bucks will get you in to walk around and a few more will get you a pint of shiner to drink as you walk around (it’s down the street from the wax museum if I remember). It was fairly amusing to look at all of the old west stuff.

My knowledge of the city is restricted to the NW side and the west side of 410 (home and work… work and home thus is my life)

Sorry for the quiet today, been busy. Ok, first of all, thank you, Cheri. I know you’d be here if you could. And I wasn’t going to tell on you. Nope, not me. innocent smile

Zen! How are you, buddy? Long time no hear from, yes. I’ve been more of a lurker of late, for various reasons. hugs enthusiastically

I believe you are referring to the recently moved and renovated Long Horn Saloon and museum, CRorex, though I thought it was still down further south, just north of IH10/Hwy 90 off of Probandt St. It is always worth a look-see, yes. However, the old St Paul Square Train Station is now a cool strip mall-type place with many good eateries, I hear. Also, right near by is the always popular Spaghetti Warehouse, in a wonderful old bldg. Good inexpensive food, beer, wine, and such.

Ok, how many vote for the 14th, starting at around 3-4pm for eats, then on to the night life afterwards, for those so inclined? And how many for the 28th, starting about the same time? Either/both works for me.

Next, we need to decide what type of food everyone wants. Steak, chicken, burgers, good ole American food? Pretend Mexican? Authentic Mexican? Spaghetti/Italian? While The Riverwalk has many fine restaurants, and you can get almost any type of food you could wish, it is pricy for the most part. I suggest we save that part for the boozing/drinking/hanging out time after we eat, but I’ll defer to the majority on that. Wade in with your choices, and I’ll narrow down the restaurant choices for everyone.

I’ll check back in a few hours, time to go feed face for a bit, hang out with the family. Tonight is Taco Cabana night for the whole extended Bear clan; at least the SA gang.
