The Very First AlamoDopefest Ever

Papadeaux is always yummy. Pretty expensive mind you, but still damn good. However the whole no reservations and them being PACKED every day they are open…

Simi’s – Indian on Fredricksburg E of 410. Is pretty good

Thai Taste – Evers and 410 it decent. Hotter than smeg mind you…

Chinese – Golden Wok North of 10 on Wurnsbach

Ding How – Really good garlic chicken

Papacitos – Mexican is pretty yummy

There is a small mexican restraunt, that I want to say is SW of the 10-410 interchange at callahan that was really good… I can’t for the life of me remember the name or the directions I took…

Joe’s Crab shack is good, if people are into really laid back shrimp and crab. And 64 oz drinks

We’ve held a few HouDopefests at Joe’s Crab Shack here and it’s worked well enough to have them out on the deck. That avoids all the Joe’s Crab Shack silliness that goes on inndoors. But outdoors in Texas in the summer can be a bit warm.

I agree, Ringo, about all the Joe’s Crab Shacks I’ve heard off. Too loud to be heard over the noise, so little Doper conversation would be possible. That rather defeats the purpose of getting together.

I like the Golden Wok on Wurzbach, between Fredericksburg Rd and I10. The original owners and my parents used to be friends, back when the only GW was off of Marbach and 410, which is still there.

Pappadeaux would be like Joe’s, and too expensive for me.

I don’t know about Simi’s or Thai; not really my thing these days. And Papacito’s is ok. Personally, I’d rather drive across town to El Maracumbe for authentic Mex. And with it being on the NE side of town, that may be more convenient for more out-of-towners.

That reminds me. There are two other Mexican restaurants that offer authentic Mex. food; I have been to both. One is between Fred. Rd and Hildebrand (I need to double check my directions), The oldest continuously operated by the same family restaurant in Texas; and the other is is on S. Alamo or S. St. Mary’s downtown. I just blanked on the name of the place, easy enough to find though. But, the second one is where Tommy Lee Jones and other celebrities hang out. I actually saw him there once.

<For those who may not know, Tommy Lee lives on his ranch just north of SA a ways, and is often seen around town.>

That being said, I still think that D & B’s is an excellent choice, and we can make reservations there.

Where are all the Austinites? The other San Antonians? The rest of the D/FW bunch? The other Houstonites? We only have a week left to settle all details, so chime in with your choices, people.

I’m trusting the locals on the gathering spot.

Hehe I wouldn’t trust me on selecting a spot. I typically only go out for drinks or when friends stop by to visit which is quite infrequent.

Ok, then I will chime in with my top three choices, and I’ll take votes, based on what everyone wants. I’m really hoping to hear from the rest of the Texas bunch, especially the other San Antonians.

  1. Dave & Buster’s (variety of food choices, decent prices, pool and other games available, easy to find, no one will notice if we get loud with our talking, about 15 min or so from downtown)

  2. The Spaghetti Warehouse (good prices, just off downtown, very near the Riverwalk, we can make noise there and no one will care, I’m partial to their lasagna)

  3. El Maracumbe ( great Mexican food, not just TexMex, good prices, on NE side of town, yet still only 15-20 from downtown and Riverwalk)

Shall we say 3pm for the early birds, or come when you can? We can hang out a while, then eat around 4 or whenever we get hungry. And a night out on The Riverwalk afterwards for those so inclined? Ringo, might you be bringing any of the other Houstonites with you, like Irishman? I hope so, so I can flirt with both of you, when Mr Bear’s not looking…

Hey guys! I am a fellow San Antonion as well. Can I tag along? No preference as to where. I do like the Flying Saucer a lot or any of the Riverwalk haunts. There is also a cool bar called Stoneworks at the Quarry that has good food and live music.

What day/time and how do I have any idea how to find you?

I’m partial to DnB…just not sure I can make it at 3pm…put me down still for a maybe?

WOHOO!! Another San Antonian! Of course you can tag along, Mipiace! Welcome, welcome. Right now it’s looking like this Saturday, June 14th, at 3pm, location still being debated. I’ve heard the Stoneworks is a nice place, yes. As to how to find us, I will be making reservations for the Adams Family. Ask for us that way, or look for the crowd of mis-matched peoples having fun. I have long blond hair, and will almost certainly be wearing purple, of course. I’ll likely be bringing one of my many purple bears along too, as mascot.
purrplebear, getting excited…

Alright. One vote for D&B from DirkGntly. Gotcha. And of course, by all means, come when you can. I’m sure we’ll be hanging out there at least a couple of hours.
Does that mean you and the Mrs will both be coming, possibly? Any kidlings tagging along? It’s fine with me if there are.

Okay, wherever you guys decide is fine, I will check for a final destination on Saturday AM and head out in the afternoon looking for the Adams family. I am excited to meet you all. I had no idea there were so many SA SDers.

Well, I’m not seeing anyone else chiming in with any suggestions. Glad you’re coming, mipiace. If no one else puts in a vote, I will decide on Wed, and make reservations. I do need a headcount, however, or at least an approximate one.

YIKES purple bear!! I can’t believe I forgot! My dughter’s Ballet recital is at 5PM on Sat. I am not sure I will be able to make Saturday after all…

  1. How late will you be there?
  2. Did you say you might do a repeat at a later date?

I really would like to meet you locals but I definitely can’t miss this one!!

Bummer on the conflict, mipiace. I would guess we would be there till 6 or so, then on to some other venue for libations, etc. I don’t mind giving you my phone number, but not on here. I will email you this evening with it. That way, you can call my cell phone and find out where we’re all hanging out at.

purrplebear, still waiting for anyone else to chime in with a head count…

So, where am I supposed to be at 3:00 this Saturday?

 At Dave and Buster’s, at IH10 and Loop 410, Ringo. I’m going to ask Lord Jim tomorrow to put the map up on here. I never did learn how to do the linking thing. :smack:

So, shall I make reservations for 10-15 people? hopeful smile

purrplebear, doing the happy dance…

I just got out of surgery this past Saturday, so no drinkie-winkie for me, but I might be able to make it anyway.

In other words

<--------------------

Another Alamo City Gal checking in!

If I weren’t out of work b/c of the surgery, I’d suggest that you guys all head down to my bar on the Riverwalk and have a frosty adult beverage with me that night…okay, it isn’t my bar, but I like to think it is when I’m standing behind it. And normally I work on Saturday nights, so I could’ve made you all some lethal margaritas!

Funny, I don’t think I’ve encountered many of you local Dopers much on the SDMB. What’s up with that? I thought we Texans were supposed to stick together!

I don’t know how I’ll be feeling on Saturday, but I’ll try to make it!

Hey that sounds great purple bear. I should be done later in the evening and I’d love to catch up to you guys. Thanks!

WOHOO! Another San Antonian heard from. Welcome, Audrey Levins. I’m sorry to hear that you just had surgery, though. I hope you will be able to come join us, at least for an hour or so. And lethal margaritas sound good to me. Which bar, if I may ask?

You’re welcome, mipiace. I just realized I forgot to email you last night. oops…

I’m in.

Umm… to get to D&B I’d take fredricksburg road E until 410 then go north on the service road correct?
