Let's make a glorious summer beach playlist

I’m not going to make any too specific restrictions, but let me lay the following mental image on you before you begin: you’re laying on a beautiful beach- sun shining, waves crashing. Private, the beach is for just you and your closest friends- if you even want them there. Sunblock, coconut, and that damp sandy smell is wafting through the air. You’ve got a rum drink- an awesome rum drink.

**So, what’s playing? **

Feel free to cross all kinds of genres and time frames. I suppose if I were to limit the thread in any way, I’d give you this: let’s try to be either relaxing or happy in our choices-- if death metal is your music of choice. . . let’s go a little more chill or cheery :p.

Some ideas to get us started (all link to the songs on Youtube)-- some of these are random, but hey! I now associate them with beaches :).
Under the Boardwalk- The Drifters

Can’t Help Falling In Love- Elvis

Baby I Love Your Way- Peter Frampton

No Woman, No Cry- Bob Marley (While not nearly even in the same galaxy as the original, the Fugees version of this song is quite good, too).

Stir It Up- Bob Marley

Over The Rainbow- Iz

California Girls- Beach Boys
(Naturally, there are plenty of other great versions of this song).

Summertime - Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff

There are a whole bunch of more current pop and rap songs I love and associate with the beach, too, but I’ll leave that- plus the rest of the classics- to you guys to discuss!
Oh, and full disclosure?

I’m heading to Belize for 10 days in July and want an epic play list. I’m totally drawing blanks, so I’m looking to the collective genius of the Dope to hook me up with ideas!:D:cool:

I Live For the Sun - The Sunrays

Summertime - Ray Charles & Cleo Laine

K-39 - Challengers

Moon Dawg - The Beach Boys

Boat Drinks - Jimmy Buffett

One Particular Harbour

I’ve always pictured “wouldn’t it be nice” by the Beach Boys as a summer time song.

A Dip In The Ocean

For a smoother and mellower period of relaxation, courtesy of Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd-Marooned

Pink Floyd-Echoes

Two by UB40:

Can’t Help Falling In Love With You

and

Red Red Wine

Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer
See You in September - The Happenings
Summer in the City - Lovin’ Spoonful
Heat Wave - Martha and the Vandellas
A Summer Song - Chad and Jeremy
Wipe Out - The Sufaris

No playlist would be complete without Ke$ha (YMMV):

Blow
Get Loose
Guilty Pleasure
Lost Weekend
Only Wanna Dance with You
Pretty Lady
VIP

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel

Ease Your Feet In The Sea - Belle & Sebastian

Youm gotta have some surf music.

may I suggest ..:: The Razorblades ::.. |  The Band

Sunny Days by Lighthouse. Best summer song EVER!

Looking for the Summer, Chris Rea

Hot Summer Day, It’s a Beautiful Day

Turn Down Day, The Cyrkle

The Ocean, Dar Williams

Len - Steal my Sunshine

The B-52’s are the quintessential beach music - any of their songs qualify. But to narrow it down, let’s go with:

Rock Lobster

Love Shack

I’ve made summer CDs two summers in a row. Here are some of my favorites.

Happy as the Sun - Tyrone Wells

The Sound of Sunshine - Michael Franti & Spearhead

Sun - Airplanes

Sunshine in my Sky - Kate Voegele

Summer Girl - Jessica Andrews

Sunshine Girl - Britt Nicole

Summer Sunshine - The Corrs

Island in the Sun- Weezer

Sweet Tea - Cravin’ Melon
Summertime- The Click Five

Sunshine and Summertime - Faith Hill

Summerfeeling - Pandera

Here Comes Summer - The Yum Yums

Looking at the Sun- Gramercy Arms
Hey Hey Hey- Uncle Kracker

Beach Baby – The First Class

The album photos look so old now. The lyrics are pretty hackneyed. But when the song gets going, I feel a tidal wave of nostalgia.

Summertime - The Sundays

San Tropez - Pink Floyd

Who Loves the Sun - The Velvet Underground

Whip-Smart - Liz Phair

Summer Nights - from Grease, Olivia Newton John and John Travolta
Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams
Suddenly Last Summer - The Motels
Cruel Summer - Bananarama
Summertime - Billy Stewart (from the 60’s)

The last four have a melancholy tinge. Not all of summer is happy happy joy joy.

Blondie, In the Sun
Jethro Tull,Look Into the Sun
Lou Reed, Ride Into the Sun
Druid, Toward the Sun

Some serene “ambient” music:

Brian Eno, On Some Faraway Beach
