I SURVIVED WE DIDN’T EVEN ARGUE (all 3 of us were on our collective best behavior) a celebratory bowl is imminent.
Once I took some cans in to be redeemed.
But one can didn’t go into the machine. It was an evil can that refused to be redeemed.
Almost one month sober.
Still half a wine bottle in the fridge.
Not tempted to drink. It’s too damn hot.
I don’t use the machines. If I had I’d probably still be there. I go to a redemption center where all I have to do is carry them in and dump them on their counter. The employees do all the sorting and counting. I scheduled it for today because it’s the sixth of the month. A local redemption center gives you six cents back today instead of the usual five.
My brother was very surprised and pleased with the surprise call from all three of us. I think my son is talking to him now. Always nice when the Birthday Boys get together, even over the phone.
My son said he had a wonderful birthday. His wife, a superb cook, made him a fancy birthday cake. Everything she makes looks like a magazine cover and is scrumptious.
I’m not fond of ethnic jokes, BTW.
Shoe! Glad you made it through the visit, and that it wasn’t as bad as you thought it might be.
I don’t remember any pushing to eat our food. As I recall, I did and my sister was pickier.
Dinner tonight was scrambled tofu (at my lovely wife’s request) after a long day working remotely for her and mulching/weeding for me. Book of the day was Dick’s The Variable Man, which I liked a lot. It made me want to re-read Asimov’s Foundation and Empire.
when mom was around that phrase and the "its the last week of the month so were using whatever we have " warning made me get a box of ramen and the big jars of pb%j
cause it slopped in a pan with some sort of sauce and noodles mixed together … and more often than not even the cats would eat it
you know my other home town in Indiana had one for about 3 months in the mid-80s when i was a kid and then it just disappeared … I miss pioneer chicken that used to be here in so cal …
Yay i can’t be around certain relative for more than a few hours at a time …
actually they haven’t done the one can at a time machines here for years … what we usually get is some guy in a truck trailer or shed with a big scale parked beside a store … those types are used to just 4 or 5 bucks for the transients to get cigarettes or their next bottle of beer … Otherwise, you go to the scrapyard/or auto dismantlers and turn them in
we’ll have fun and cyall later
It’s nearly 1:30 in the AM and it’s been raining and thundering since midnight. I’d had just enough sleep that I’m still wide awake but exhausted. Dammit.
Son-of-a-wrek started mashing cans and selling them as a teenager. For gas money.
He still does it. He says it’s his second career.
Morning, mumpers! Big news here today is that the plumber has been and replaced the busted bits of the toilet cistern so now the whole thing flushes again! No more hauling buckets of water from the bathtub over to the loo
It’s cool and a bit damp outside, nice day for staying indoors and working. I’ve still got quite a bit to do in terms of mopping up after end-of-session, and then we start on the next big job which will be sorting out module choices again. We did all our module choices stuff months ago but now the start of next year has changed because some modules can’t run under the new resilience framework so for at least one of my depts, we have to do the whole exercise again.
I’d quite like to go and hide under a blanket today.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN Woke up a little after four to answer the call of the wild and was just awake, so I stayed up. ‘Tis 76 Amurrkin out and cloudy (dark, actually), with a predicted high of 86 with rain/tstorms/apocalypse predicted for later this mornin’ and then all day. The big excitatement of the day is laundry. Woo and Hoo! Sup shall be leftover poke tenderloin and squish casserole and whatever else is decided. We eat up the leftovers. Fortunately neither of us minds leftovers.
Shoe glad you survived the visit from the parental units.
nellie yay for the great phone visit.
gotti how sad about the cake! I mourn for the chawklit.
I like Bojangles chikin, a lot. Bojangles and Popeye’s are the best fast food chikin. KFC ain’t even on the same planet with those two. The Pubic Sto’ does a pretty good fried chikin as well. So does the Harvey’s Sto. Of course, my own home fried chikin is the best, just don’t do that very often.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Tuesday Y’all!
@ThelmaLou made my TIME cover spoof & I cried when I first saw it, I was so touched.
I hesitated to use it for my avatar - preeeehhtty sure that’s tootin’ my own horn - but then I figured, where else am I gonna get to share it?
Morning all!
Yay for the low-stress visit Shoe, condolences on the dry cake Gotti and also yay for nice burfdy phone calls Nellie- my brother’s birthday tomorrow is one of those unnerving ones ending in a 0. I should probably give him a call, as well as a card, as I couldn’t think of a present he’d actually want and I don’t want to send stuff for the sake of sending stuff.
The plan for the day is going to check on the
- I might have to work out a way to get some of the honey out soon, which could be interesting. I’ve borrowed kit from the club before, but I’m not sure how that’ll be working at the moment. I might do some food shopping later, but I’m not really out of stuff yet, except booze, so maybe I’ll leave it for tomorrow. Tough choice.
It was nearly 3 before I was able to sleep again - that was one long, violent storm we had! When I finally dragged myself to the kitchen to tend the critters (around 6:30) I looked out and saw that my 2 pots of petunias were beaten down pretty badly. Hope they recover - they were really pretty yesterday afternoon. On the plus side, I don’t have to water the lawn today.
Daughter made an appointment for 1 today to look at one of the manufactured homes - one site called it a mobile home, and I find it hard to believe it’ll be worth $185K, but we shall see. FCD won’t be able to go - he’s got a teleconference - so I have to be the voice of reason. They’re so antsy about moving out, but I don’t know if they’ve done any serious budgeting. We’ll have that talk today.
Not sure what else the day will hold - maybe I’ll pull some weeds or remove the day lily stalks that have bloomed out. You know - exciting stuff.
Happy Tuesday!
My adventure for today is to do the quarterly fire sprinkler test at the County Jail. Another place I am going to be glad to see for the last time.
Say “hi” to Skip and C.C. and Bones, if he’s still around!
(Note: I do not actually know any people in jail.)
Back in 9th grade, the tree hugging science teacher got us collecting Al cans. This was before the bottle bill, so it was by weight, think a cent a can.
Class day was free that year…

Not too long ago, one of my mom’s cousins was doing genealogical stuff and she discovered that one of her grandfathers (my great grandfather) committed suicide in prison where he was on a murder conviction. Somehow, that story never made it into family lore. At least not entirely - my mom knew he’d committed suicide, but not the prison part.
Who knew my history was so checkered…
FCM, I think most of us would be surprised at our family history if we really investigated it. And yeah, budgeting is important–but good luck with that…
Hippy, just make sure they know you’re there only temporarily…
shoe, so far, so good. Family is tough, but you can do it.
boo fae, hang in there, t’were best be done quickly, so you don’t have to keep worrying about it.
MG, Nemo, most of my cans are soup or Pepsi, they go in the recycle bin, collecting them for any small change just isn’t worth it. Or am I completely missing the point (nothing new there).
nellie, yeah on family calls.
Up at 6:30 am, I turned off the AC late at night since it’s cooler outside, but awakened to what sounds like the system working. Will look into it later. Heading for mid 80’s and 60% chance of rain this afternoon, so need to be about my outdoor chores this morning. Mostly taking some stuff to Rescue Mission store.
All y’all take care.
Happy Toosday!
It’s a cloudy cool 70 something out there.
I heard y’all got some pretty bad storms last night FCM.
There was a manufactured home I looked at, I wish I could have bought it as it was on a beautiful piece of property with cows across the street and a teeny tiny stream in the back. It was kind of funny, because when I walked inside I thought the kitchen looked like a trailer, however the outside looked like a house. Whoever, whenever, had put in a trailer and then built around it.
Unfortunately, it would have never been approved by the mortgage company.
Good luck with the house hunting.
Taking off this morning since I have a doctor appoinment in what would normally be the middle of my shift. I thought about starting my evening shift earlier, but the neighbor asked me for a ride to the store and I said OK. If you are going to send over warm out of the oven cookies, I will drive you to the store.
And he’s a great source of info about what is going on in the neighborhood.
The dog park has been a sad place since covid. Lots of people haven’t come back.
I’ve been thinking about a second trip there in the afternoons.
Adam is really losing weight, so I think there may be a trip to the vet. He’s still active, eating, and acting like his normal pita self. It could be because he’s outside more and is getting more exercise.
