Let's mimic Andy Rooney here

As dull and pointless as at least half of the late departed Mr. Rooney’s 60 Minutes pieces were, he did have an occasional insight or point of view that was fresh and startling in the sense that I had never thought of it myself.

There have been countless such ideas here, as thread titles, polls, even random posts or comments by Dopers with a particularly savvy bent.

All I have here is the idea, with no concrete examples to point to, but I feel pretty sure you must have seen some of the same ones I thought at the time: “Wow, what a neat idea!”

Let’s see if we can point to such threads or posts.

Or, failing that, let’s just list some new or different ideas that have yet to be discussed here.

(Yes, I know I have tried to start other threads with a similar theme. Maybe This One will work?)

At the moment 68 people have viewed this and none have replied. I’m getting used to that sort of reaction.

One approach I may take for myself will be to go through lists of threads that had some action without being runaways, or even those that never got a peep, but which have a tantalizing idea expressed in the title. I’ll post a link to them in hopes my list will trigger others. At worst, some of you might want to reply (if you haven’t already) to any that strike that “o, wow!” nerve of yours.

Well, I can’t think of any threads. I thought you wanted us to propose Andy Rooneyesque stupid pointless rants. Everything I think of comes out in a Roseann Rosannadanna voice … which, come to think of it, may have been the point of that character! light bulb

It would be much better, of course, if these were brand new ideas that had never even made it to the thread title phase, but threads that have had no action (or very little) even though their titles suggest some Rooneyesque twists of thought might serve as a jumping-off place for some bizarre topics.

I know at least once a day some idea will be posted here, and will often take off as a hot topic, while others can make me say to myself, “Wow! That’s a fresh idea.” Sad to say, I don’t always join in such discussions for one reason or another, but I do appreciate the offbeat nature of the topic and will often read what others have said.

The “stupid pointless rants” you mention are those I classified in the OP as “dull and pointless” and are largely why I wasn’t a big fan of Rooney’s segment. However, I do give him credit for having a Larry David or Jerry Seinfeld way of looking at the trivial and mundane in a way that made me consider such a thing from a new vantage point.

But as this thread is in its infancy, I can’t argue that my suggestion for where it should go is any more relevant than anyone else’s with a similar idea.

Maybe the thrill of discussing “previously unseen ideas” can take us to an unpredictable place! At least there are now two names in the “Who Posted?” list.

O…K., I’ll give it a shot-

Well, what did you expect-he’s dead!

What the hell is this texting stuff? Or twitter? Only birds tweet. Email. What’s wrong with old fashioned paper mail and envelopes taking days to get there? And the fax? I don’t need a damn fax, I can accept a telegram. Cell phones. If I wanted to take business calls while I am on the golf course, I’d stay in the office. Leave me alone when I’m not at work. I’d say shove your pager up your ass, but nobody remembers what a pager is.

I’d imitate Andy Rooney, but my eyebrows aren’t bushy enough.
